.SHORT TERM...A front currently over the panhandle extends from a
low over the NW gulf. This is causing widespread rainfall this
morning along with gusty winds over the southern inner channels as
well as channels open to the east like Cross Sound and Tenakee
Inlet. Expect the rain to become more showery with some breaks as
the front pushes north through the afternoon.
The next, much stronger system, will move in quickly
Sunday evening. The storm force low will move into the eastern
gulf from the south and progress northward along the outside
waters through late Sunday night, then inland near Yakutat around
mid-day Monday. Models have come into better agreement on the low
track, helping to increase confidence in timing of wind shifts
from SE to W-SW. While the track is slightly more off the coast,
the low center is slightly deeper. So have opted to keep the high
wind potential in the forecast. Confidence in wind gusts to 60mph
is higher for POW Island and the Ketchikan area, so have upgraded
the watch to a warning for that area. Most other places will see
a period of very strong winds that are most noticeable as the
winds shifts to the SW. Once the low jumps inland, pressure will
rise through the inside waters and a burst of S-SW winds will
track northward through the late afternoon. This will cause
relatively light north winds through Lynn Canal early Monday
morning to quickly increase out of the south, up to 50kt for a
short amount of time.
Heavy rain will accompany the low pressure system and track
northward with it. Behind the cold front, temperatures aloft fall
sharply, causing a transition to showers and possible convection.
Have included a slight chance of thunderstorms in the forecast for
the outside waters Monday afternoon and will monitor for the
potential of these to reach the coast. The cold air will also
cause some mixing with snow or ice pellets Monday night.
The 00z Canadian was a good compromised track between other 00z
models, taking the low north along the outside waters then inland
near Yakutat. The 06z runs of the GFS and NAM took a similar path
that gave that track more confidence. Nudged wind speeds up
slightly using the NAMnest and the Canadian.
.LONG TERM.../Tuesday through Sunday/ As of 10 pm Saturday. Upper
level trough over Western Alaska that has been feeding storms into
the panhandle is finally showing signs of breaking down mid to
late week. It starts with an arctic high digging into the northern
part of the trough eventually cutting it off into an upper low.
Said low then drifts E across the gulf late week, ending up over
BC by next Sunday. Though how fast it does this has not been pined
down yet. Forecast confidence is moderate through the long range
as there are several weak short waves mixed into this pattern that
are complicating the forecast. Favored WPC for any needed updates
today.
At the surface, several short waves are moving through the area
through late week, but none are anywhere near as strong as the Sun
and Mon systems. The only short wave of note is at the beginning
of the long range on Tue that will be bringing more showers and
some gusty winds to the area. Nothing significant, mostly 20 to
30 kt winds for most areas and more organized showers but these
should be brief lasting only through about mid day Tue. Rest of
the long range features continued damp conditions as more weak
waves move through. The panhandle shows signs of beginning to dry
out by next weekend from NW to SE as the upper low moves out.
Another concern for the long range is the cooler air mass that
will be moving through Tue into Fri with the coolest conditions
expected for Tue and Wed. 850 mb temps forecast to drop down into
the -7 to -8C range at that time. Snow levels will likely lower
to a few hundred feet across the area. Some areas in the north
(like Yakutat, Haines, Gustavus, Hoonah, Skagway, and Juneau) may
see their rain showers change over to a mix or all snow,
particularly at night. No significant accumulations are expected
at this time, but an inch or two here and there is not out of the
questions.
