DOT reported 8 inches of wet snow near 8 mile and an estimated 6

Southeast Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SHORT TERM.../Through Thu night/ Very active Christmas night in
store for the panhandle as a strong front storms in from the gulf
this evening. Forecast changes today mainly focused on local
effects for winds and precip amounts (mainly snow). Several of
the weather watches that were issued yesterday have been upgraded
to warnings for both winter weather and for high wind. Marine
winds have also received a boost in some cases.

First for the winter weather headlines. The watches that were up
for the Haines Highway and Hyder areas have both been upgraded to
warnings. For the Haines Highway in particular, the highest
accumulations are expected from Klukwan and westward as
temperatures farther east will likely be too warm to accumulate
much snow at all. Still some question if terrain shadowing and/or
temperatures will curtail precip amounts in the Chilkat Valley,
but confidence is good for precip rates to be enough to allow snow
melt cooling to cause significant accumulations along the Haines
Highway tonight. Hyder was also changed to a warning as with all
of the snow it has on the ground from recent storms it will
likely have temperatures stay near freezing throughout the period.
So when the heavier precip from the front arrives significant
accumulations are likely there as well.

As for winds, current guidance has been trending toward slightly
higher winds. This is just enough to bring in storm force winds
for the near shore waters of the gulf tonight and continue to
support widespread gales for the inner channels. This also brings
in a little more confidence for the possibility of high winds for
some areas of the panhandle. High wind warnings were issued for
Juneau, Sitka, Hydaburg, Craig, Ketchikan, and Metlakatla for
Gusts to 60 mph or more for tonight. Elsewhere, gusty winds of 40
mph or more are expected to be widespread this afternoon and
evening.

The post frontal environment for Thu and Thu night features
widespread 25 to 35 kt winds out of the SW this time in the gulf.
winds have also been increased for many areas of the panhandle
during this time with 25 to 30 kt winds showing up in a few
marine areas as well. Showers will also continue to be the rule
for many areas. Mainly in the form of rain, but some northern
areas may see them as snow through the period with some
accumulation.

.LONG TERM.../ Friday to Wednesday as of 9 pm Tuesday / A short
wave aloft will be exiting the gulf over the panhandle as a ridge
moves over the gulf and panhandle through the end of the week. A
multi center low south of the Aleutians will be wobbling its way
east in the western gulf, to be southwest of Kodiak Island Friday
night. There should be a frontal pushing into the Southeast
Panhandle Friday night/Saturday with a most of the model
solutions suggesting there is a follow up wave for the southern
panhandle.

For the most part the panhandle will remain in the general storm
track and as a result in the general southerly type flow for the
region.

The mid range forecast got an adjustment to bring a more active
front and storm track and warmer conditions to the panhandle.
Timing and strength of the the individual troughs will be a
troublesome spot in the forecasting. Winds could range from 25 to
50 kt in the marines and that will be reflected in the coastal
winds too. The slightly warmer air transitioning through the
panhandle with each wave will likely push the elusive rain snow
line even further northward for the weekend and start of the week.

The tail end of the forecast was nudged towards the WPC solution,
but this will be monitored to see how the long range pattern shift
with future model solutions. Confidence is average for the later
part of the forecast, mainly due to the uncertainty in the
incoming system.
