.DISCUSSION...

Synopsis...
Snowy conditions are again impacting the West Coast and Western
Interior as a front tracks northeast from the Y-K Delta. Snow will
spread north into the Seward Peninsula by this afternoon and reach
the Chukchi Coast and Western Brooks Range by early Friday. A
series of weather fronts will continue to bring moisture up the
coast, resulting in periods of snow into the weekend for much of
the West Coast and Western Interior. Winds will be significantly
weaker than the previous system, so the main threat will be heavy
snow at times for the Nulato Hills, southern Seward Peninsula, and
western Brooks Range. The Central and Eastern Interior will be
mostly shadowed out by Chinook conditions beginning Friday. As the
front continues north across the Brooks Range, high pressure over
the Chukchi Sea will tighten the gradient, resulting in strong
east winds and light snow for the North Slope Friday into
Saturday, mainly west of Prudhoe Bay.

Aloft 500 mb...
Longwave troughing persists over eastern Siberia and the Bering
Sea as a 500 dam vertically stacked low churns eastward near the
dateline in the southern Bering Sea. Ridging over the Gulf of
Alaska continues to break down in advance of powerful shortwave
emanating from the Bering low. A second low will move into the
Bering Sea from the Northwest Pacific Friday and absorb the
previous system over the Pribilofs. This interaction will result
in a combined system which will rapidly deepen to 492 mb by
Saturday morning. With very strong dynamics at play, a powerful
shortwave will sweep east across the Gulf of Alaska and serve and
the knockout punch for high pressure in the Gulf of Alaska. By
Sunday, the longwave trough will engulf the state and support a
major pattern change into early next week.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
Flurries and low clouds will be likely across the North Slope over
the next couple of days, particularly tonight as high pressure
builds east from the Chukchi Sea. North winds will bring colder
air south from the high Arctic, resulting in periods of low
visibility for much of the immediate coast. By late Friday, a
weather front will sweep north over the Brooks Range, delivering
snow to the Western Brooks Range and coastline west of Prudhoe
Bay. High pressure to the north will keep the gradient tight,
resulting in periods of blowing snow and low visibility Saturday
into Sunday.

West Coast and Western Interior...
A weather front associated with deep low pressure in the south
Bering Sea will sweep north across the West Coast and Western
Interior, reaching the Chukchi Coast and Western Brooks Range by
Friday morning. southeasterly winds along the front will favor
the Yukon side of the Nulato Hills, southern Seward Peninsula, and
the Western Brooks Range for the heaviest snow. Snow totals will
be modest, as the direction of flow will limit the availability of
moisture. However, a series of weather fronts will follow a
similar path through the weekend, resulting in a steady
accumulation of snow for the aforementioned areas into Sunday.
Gusty winds will be confined to the central Bering and immediate
coastline of the Y-K Delta. As such, Winter Weather Advisories are
in effect for St. Lawrence Island and the Yukon Delta. Winds will
abate through tonight, leaving snow as the main threat into the
weekend.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Quiet conditions expected this evening for much of the Interior
as weak ridging maintains its grasp of the region. A weather front
will sweep east across the Interior from the southwest tonight
into Friday. Strong southerly flow at the surface and aloft will
support Chinook conditions, resulting in little to no snow for the
eastern Interior including the Alaska Highway and Fortymile
Country to Fairbanks and the Yukon Flats. The higher terrain of
the Southern Brooks Range could see 1 to 3 inches of snow through
Saturday. South winds through Alaska Range Passes could gust over
45 mph Friday, then up to 60 mph Saturday as a second front tracks
east.

Models...
Models continue to initialize 2 to 3 mb too high along the
Beaufort Coast, thought this should become a non-factor as the low
moves into Canadian waters. Elsewhere, no major issues with
initialization or continuity at 21Z. The Nam has picked up some
speed over the latest model run, but the ECMWF/GFS solution
remains consistent into early next week.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.
