.DISCUSSION...
An active weather pattern will persist into next week for the
West Coast, the Western Interior, the Western and Central Brooks
Range, and the North Slope with snow, strong winds, blowing snow
and even freezing rain expected. Strong winds, snow, blowing snow
and freezing rain have moved into the West Coast while strong
winds and blowing snow will develop north of the Brooks Range
tonight and blizzard conditions are expected to develop along the
Arctic Coast tonight to the west of Utqiagvik. The central and
eastern interior under an upper level ridge will continue with
above normal temperatures and limited precipitation into Friday
night, however a weak front will bring a chance of light snow to
these areas Friday night and Saturday. A stronger system will push
into the central interior Sunday and Monday.

The 00z model suite initialized well and remains in relatively
good agreement with the overall synoptic scale pattern out through
early next week with the concensus being that the very active
weather pattern for the Bering Sea and Western Alaska will
continue well into next week.

Aloft, at 500 mb, a ridge currently stretches along a line from
Anchorage to Utqiagvik. The position of the ridge is currently
bringing a good fetch of southwesterly flow over the west coast of
Alaska from deep in the mid latitudes. The ridge will flatten and
be pushed east into Canada as a strong shortwave plows east over
northern Alaska Friday night and Saturday. The ridge will attempt
to establish itself again over eastern Alaska Saturday however a
very strong shortwave plows east out of the Bering Sea Saturday
night, and into the central interior Sunday and into Canada
Monday Morning. The upper level ridge rebounds again over Western
Alaska early next week and combined with a deep longwave trough
again extending south from the Bering Sea into the mid latitudes
will produce another week of very active weather for Western
Alaska.

Central and Eastern Interior: With the ridge currently overhead ,
limited precipitation is expected for most areas today with the
main exception to this being those areas northwest of Tanana,
where several inches of snow is expected into Friday. As the ridge
breaks down and is forced into Canada on Friday, and a weak front
pushes through the interior, some light snow is expected Friday
and into Friday night. The ridge briefly moves back over the
Central interior on Saturday before a stronger front moves over
the area from the west on Sunday. Models continue to differ on
the strength of this front and how much snow will accompany the
front.

West Coast, Western Interior and Western Brooks Range: Several
pushes of moisture will ride north along a stalled front over the
area producing significant ice accumulations of up to one quarter
of an inch in the Lower YK Delta before the freezing rain turns to
rain. The rain will likely freeze on the ground and roads but is
not expected to accumulate significantly on elevated surfaces.
Heavy snow in these areas will mix with freezing rain northward to
the foothills of Brooks Range. Up to one tenth of an inch of ice
accumulation is expected through Friday evening north of
Unalakleet to Kotzebue. Trace amounts are expected further north.
Strong and gusty winds will likely cause reduced visibilities in
blowing snow initially but as the rain and freezing rain moves
north visibilities should improve. Areas north of Kotzebue where
limited amounts of freezing rain is expected will likely continue
to experience low visibilities in heavy snow and blowing snow.
Storm total snowfall accumulations in the Western Brooks Range
will be well in excess of a foot through Saturday.

North Slope: Southerly winds in the Brooks Range will increase
tonight as the next front pushes north and a low deepens along
the western North Slope Coast. The southerly downslope winds on
the north side of the Brooks Range are expected to increase
tonight with wind gust to 45 mph expected, however model guidance
continues to bounce back and forth from weaker wind solutions to
stronger winds solutions with the NAM showing much stronger winds.
Continue to monitor the wind trends as stronger winds developing
would require upgrades to the current Winter Weather Advisories
in zones 205 and 206. Snowfall is expected tonight along the
Chukchi Sea coast as a front moves north. In addition, southwesterly
winds will pick up during this time period all along the coast as
a trough currently over the Bering Strait deepens to into 994 mb
low just west of Point Hope this afternoon and rapidly moves
northeast to be located 200 nm northwest of Point Barrow Friday
morning as a 992 mb low. This will bring blizzard conditions to
areas from Utqiagvik west tonight. Blizzard Warnings have been
issued for zones 201 and 202. The winds will cause blowing snow
to develop tonight; however, in the absence of falling to the east
of Utqiagvik, Winter Weather Advisories have been issued for
zones 203 and 204.
