will continue over summits this morning.

Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...A period of relatively quiet weather is expected for
northern Alaska for the remainder of the work week. High pressure
will continue to build over the Northern Interior through Friday.
A pressure gradient will produce some gusty winds and local
blowing snow over higher Terrain across the Northern Interior on
Thursday. A cooling trend in temperatures is expected over the
next few days for most locations over northern Alaska with
temperatures dropping down to near normal.

.DISCUSSION...
A 550 dam high over the Beaufort Sea will persist into Friday.
A weak upper low in the Eastern Bering will weaken slowly through
Thursday becoming a trough of low pressure by Friday. A 510 dam
low will persist in the Gulf of Alaska through Thursday.

Surface...A 1024 mb high pressure ridge centered just south of
Banks Island will persist into Friday slipping slowly southward
over the southern Northwest Territories and northern Alberta by
Saturday. A low pressure trough over the West Coast of Alaska will
persist through Saturday as a weak low pressure system near
Kodiak Island drifts north into South Central Alaska.

North Slope and Brooks Range...Strong easterly winds continue to
diminish over the eastern north slope today. Winds will will pick
back up in Brooks range passes on Thursday. Southerly gusts to 30
mph expected on Thursday.

Interior...High pressure continues to build over the Northern
Interior through Friday. A brief period of light now and flurries
accompanies a weak front the continue to push south and west. The
front is currently located along a Bettles to Fairbanks to
Northway line and will push west and southwest to be along a
Galena to McGrath line tonight. A pressure gradient will produce
some gusty winds and local blowing snow over higher Terrain across
the Northern Interior on Thursday. The Tanana Valley Jet winds
will increase again on Thursday along with winds over summits and
high terrain north of Fairbanks. Gusts of 30 to 40 mph are
possible into Friday. Southerly gap winds look to pick up in the
Alaska Range on Friday as well. A cooling trend in temperatures is
expected over the next few days for most locations. Lows expected
around zero to 10 above with the coldest temperatures of 10 to 20
below over the Yukon Flats.

West coast...A low pressure trough will continue over the Eastern
Bering Sea and West Coast through Friday. Light off shore flow
will limit the the chances for precipitation through early Friday.
A general cooling trend in temperatures is expected over the next
few days. A weak boundary will push into the Bering sea on Friday
which could increase snow shower activity over Saint Lawrence
Island and the Yukon Delta.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.
