Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Gusty easterly winds will continue into Saturday across the
western Interior and west coast into Saturday. Some light snow is
expected across the southeastern Interior through the weekend.
Another round of strong winds is expected for the west coast early
next week.

.DISCUSSION...
The models are in generally good agreement out through the
weekend. The there is also better agreement today with how the
models are handling a low that will move up into the southern
Bering Sea early next week.

At the surface, a 1024 mb high is currently stretched across the
Chukchi Sea. A 979 mb low is currently positioned in the northern
Gulf of Alaska with a second 979 mb low center in Bristol Bay. The
high will continue to weaken in place through the weekend. The
low in the Gulf will dissipated this evening. The low in Bristol
Bay will dissipate on Sunday. A 960 mb low will move into the
southern Bering Sea on Monday.

Central and Eastern Interior: Some light snow will continue this
evening over the Fortymile Country along a stalled frontal
boundary. Winds will continue to gradually die down over the
northern Interior through Saturday afternoon. Snow will redevelop
on Saturday along this boundary as far west as Fairbanks. Up to
an inch of snow is expected for Fairbanks on Saturday. A shortwave
will move from west to east across the Interior on Sunday
bringing the potential for an additional inch of snow. On Tuesday,
the pattern shifts to a more southerly flow pattern. This pattern
will bring the potential for strong southerly gap winds to
develop in the Alaska Range. A front will push north over the
Interior Tuesday night into Wednesday. For areas from Fairbanks
south, the Chinook winds will limit the potential for
precipitation, although we will have to continue to monitor this
area for a wintery mix of precipitation as the front moves
through. North of Fairbanks snow is expected as the front moves
through.

North Slope and Brooks Range: Southwesterly winds are expected
this to persist across the Interior for Saturday. On Sunday the
winds will become more southeasterly in direction. Winds remain
southerly through Tuesday night. On Tuesday night the winds will
become easterly with strong easterly winds developing on Wednesday
along the Beaufort Sea Coast. Fog and flurries will likely persist
at times along the coast on the through the weekend. A front will
bring snow as it moves north across the Brooks Range; however, at
the moment there is still a lot of uncertainty with the details
of this.

West Coast and Western Interior: Strong east to northeasterly
winds continue across much of the west coast as well as in the
higher terrain of the western Interior. Winds will gradually die
down through Saturday afternoon. Winds in the western Interior
will drop below advisory levels later this evening. Gale force
winds will continue along the coast through Saturday afternoon.
Winds will really die out on Sunday. Strong east to northeasterly
winds will develop early Tuesday as a low moves to the north into
the southern Bering Sea. A front associated with this system will
spread precipitation northward through the west coast and western
Interior Tuesday and Wednesday of next week. There is still a lot
of uncertainty with the exact details of this system at the
moment. The strong winds will become more northerly late next
week, although the exact direction will depend on the track of the
low as it moves into Bristol Bay.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...Elevated surf is possible
for St.Lawrence Island and Diomede late next week.
