Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.DISCUSSION...

Fairly quiet conditions currently across northern Alaska this
morning, with the exception along the northern Arctic Coast with
windy conditions and periodic snow. Clouds will be moving in from
the south today, with active weather beginning west of the Alaska
Range this morning. A weather front will cause significant
impacts with freezing rain from the Yukon Delta to the Yukon
Valley beginning this morning and lasting through at least
tomorrow morning. Snow is expected to push east into Fairbanks by
tomorrow morning.

A ridge over most of mainland Alaska will begin to weaken this
afternoon. A closed low will move north into the Yukon Delta
region by Wednesday morning. This low will rotate around a complex
of lows in the Bering Sea and Northern Pacific through Thursday,
with the ridge strengthening again over mainland Alaska.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Mostly clear conditions and cold temperatures near or below zero
Fahrenheit this morning, except for southeast Alaska near the
Alaska Range. Clouds will begin to roll into the southern portions
of the Interior today. Precipitation, primarily in the form of
snow, will begin to affect Fairbanks and the surrounding areas
late tonight and will last through Thursday morning. Total snow
accumulations in the Interior ranging between 3 to 5 inches near
Fairbanks and up to 7 inches in areas west of Fairbanks. There is
also freezing rain accumulations up to a tenth of a inch in the
Tanana Valley near the Alaska Range. Winter Weather Advisories are
in effect for areas including the Yukon Flats, Middle Tanana
Valley, and Central Interior for these snow accumulations until
Thursday morning. Temperatures trending up by tomorrow and
persisting through the middle of the week due to the warm air
pushing in from the southwest.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
Intermittent snow showers moving along the North Slope this
morning. Low pressure off the northern Arctic Coast will cause
strong west winds today. As a result, Winter Weather Advisories
are in effect for reduced visibilities in blowing snow along the
Central and Easter Beaufort Sea Coasts this morning through this
evening. As the low pressure moves east, the chances for snow
will diminish, with winds becoming more easterly by late tonight.
High pressure builds off the northern Arctic Coast and will last
through the end of the week. Temperatures will be decreasing
throughout the week but will continue to be well above average, as
onshore flow will keep temperatures warm due to the open waters.

West Coast and Western Interior...
Clouds increasing this morning with the approaching weather front
from the south. Periodic snow will sweep across the West Coast
and southern portions of the western Interior this morning. This
snow will quickly transition to freezing rain, as warm air aloft
will cause the snow to melt before reaching the surface. These
conditions are expected to persist for an extended period, with
significant ice accumulations expected from areas including
McGrath and west to the coast. Winter Storm Warnings are in effect
for ice accumulations up to three tenths of an inch in the Lower
Yukon Valley, Upper Kuskokwim Valley, and the Yukon Delta through
Wednesday morning. North of the freezing rain threat, total snow
accumulations of 2 to 7 inches expected as far north as Galena
through tomorrow morning. Temperatures along the West Coast will
increase to slightly above average over the next couple of days.
