Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.DISCUSSION...
Snow associated with a weather front over the central and eastern
Interior will move east into Canada this evening. This system
brought 1 to 2 inches of new snow to portions of the Interior.
Another weather feature over the northwest Arctic coast will
bring snow showers to the North Slope into Saturday as it moves
east. The big story for tonight and this weekend is a strong
weather front approaching southwest Alaska that will push into the
west coast, Interior and western North Slope. This system will
result in a mishmash of mixed precipitation and strong winds.
Precipitation in many locations will start out as snow and
transition to freezing rain and rain. In addition, strong winds
and areas of blowing snow are expected on the west coast as well
as gusty chinook winds along the Alaska Range. Temperatures will
be above normal across the forecast area this weekend.

Models are in relatively good agreement in the short term. There
are some minor differences regarding how much, if any,
precipitation falls on the north side of the Alaska Range due to
the strong downslope winds. Also, there is still some uncertainty
in the timing of the transition from snow to freezing rain and
the northern extent of rain-snow line.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
A weather front moving into the Chukchi Sea coast tonight will
spread snow showers mainly from Utqiagvik west with around 1 inch
of new snow expected. High pressure building into the North Slope
early Saturday will tighten the pressure gradient on the eastern
Beaufort Sea coast, resulting in westerly winds 25 to 35 mph.
Winds will quickly shift to the east Saturday night and increase
through Sunday. Snow and blowing snow will develop Sunday over the
western Arctic Coast as the strong weather front impacting
western Alaska moves north. Gusty south winds 30 to 40 mph are
also expected by Sunday along north side of the Brooks Range.
Significant warm air will be moving into the area on Sunday and a
mix of snow and freezing rain is not out of the question.

West Coast and Western Interior....
A strong weather front will spread snow into the Yukon Delta and
lower Yukon River valley early this evening and to the Brooks
Range by Saturday night. Precipitation will begin as snow but will
change over to freezing rain and rain in the Yukon Delta and lower
Yukon Valley late tonight. The boundary of mixed precipitation will
continue to move north and reach the Seward Peninsula late
Saturday and the Upper Kobuk Valley and Kotzebue Sound on Sunday.
Snow amounts will be highly variable, especially at lower
elevations, where mixed precipitation will greatly affect snow
totals. Snow totals from 1 to 4 inches are likely at lower
elevations and along the coast. Higher snow amounts from 6 to 10
inches possible in favorable uplsope areas such as along the
Nulato Hills, Kuskokwim Mountains, the south slopes of the Brooks
Range. Strong southeast wind gusts ranging 40 to 60 mph are
possible in coastal areas with reduced visibility in blowing snow
before precipitation transitions to rain.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Light snow will taper off over the eastern Interior this evening.
Many locations picked up 1 to 2 inches of new snow. Brief
clearing this evening will be followed by increasing clouds late
tonight and Saturday. Snow will develop mainly west of Fairbanks
and the Dalton Highway Saturday afternoon and spread to the Brooks
Range Saturday night. Snow will mix with freezing rain or rain
south of the Yukon River by Saturday evening and possibly as far
north as the Brooks Range on Sunday. There is some uncertainty how
much mixed precipitation, if any, will fall across the middle
Tanana Valley from Fairbanks east due to the Alaska Range blocking
the precipitation. Very strong southerly winds gusting to 70 mph
or greater are expected through Alaska Range passes beginning
Saturday evening and persisting into Monday. Additionally, gusty
winds are likely over summits and in channeled areas of the
Interior.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...Gales and small craft
advisory winds are possible Monday and Tuesday but high surf or
coastal flooding is not expected.
