Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.DISCUSSION...
Strong winds are expected across the eastern Bering Sea and the
Southern Chukchi Sea on Wednesday as a strong low moves from the
north Pacific into Bristol Bay. This low will also cause winds to
increase across the Interior on Wednesday, especially in the
Tanana Valley near Delta Junction, in the Alaska Range. A front
associated with this low will bring precipitation to the Interior
late Wednesday into Thursday. This system will be our primary
concern for today.

The models are in better agreement the the strength and track of
the low as it moves from the north Pacific into Bristol Bay. We
opted to go primarily with the NAM solution as it better captures
some of the more detail of the winds in the Interior.

Central and Eastern Interior: Some light snow showers will persist
this evening over the Yukon Flats; however, we aren't expecting
much in the way of accumulation. Winds will pick up across the
Interior beginning late tonight as a strong low moves into Bristol
Bay, causing the pressure gradient to tighten up. By early
tomorrow morning a Tanana Valley Jet will develop bringing
easterly winds with gusts to 45 mph to the Delta Junction area
through much of the day. Gusty northeasterly winds will develop in
across much of the rest or the Interior. Gusts up to 35 mph are
possible on highway summits north of Fairbanks. Wednesday night
the Tanana Valley Jet winds will diminish as the gap winds in the
Alaska Range pick up. We expect wind gusts to around 45 mph
through Isabel Pass Wednesday night and Thursday. A front will
move north across the Interior Wednesday evening into Thursday.
For areas to the south of Fairbanks, no precipitation is expected
because of downslope winds off of the Alaska Range. North of
Fairbanks snow is expected. The precipitation forecast for
Fairbanks is more complex. Warm temperatures aloft favor the
precipitation being in the form of rain; however, there will
initially be a lot of dry air in the column that will need to be
overcome before the precipitation reaches the ground. There will
likely be enough dry air aloft to prevent most of the
precipitation from making it to the ground in Fairbanks; however,
we can't rule out a mixture of rain and snow showers in the
Fairbanks area. The ground in many places around Fairbanks is cold
enough that any liquid precipitation may freeze onto roadways;
however, any precipitation that does fall will be rather light.
North of the Fairbanks area 1 to 3 inches of snow is expected
Wednesday night into Thursday as this system moves north through
the area. A shortwave will move from west to east across the
Interior on Friday. This system looks to bring 1 to 3 inches of
snow as it moves through.

West Coast and Western Interior: A strong low will move out of
the north Pacific into Bristol Bay on Wednesday. This will cause
northerly winds to increase across the eastern Bering Sea early
Wednesday morning. Gusts up to 55 mph are expected for the Bering
Strait Coast and St. Lawrence Island by Wednesday afternoon and
evening. Elsewhere along the coast gusts up to 40 mph are
currently expected during this time period. Winds will die down on
Thursday as the low moves east into the Gulf of Alaska. Elevated
surf is possible for the north side of St. Lawrence Island as well
as on Diomede with this system. A front associated with low will
bring chances for snow to the western Interior as it moves north
Wednesday night. A shortwave digging to the southeast from the
Arctic will bring chances for snow to the western Interior
Thursday night. Snow amounts will range from 1 to 3 inches, with
the heaviest amounts east of Galena. The models are hinting at
another strong low moving into the Southern Bering late Friday
resulting in another round of strong winds for Saturday.

North Slope and Brooks Range: Light snow showers and areas of fog
are also expected at times along the coast through Wednesday.
Winds through Friday look to generally be light for most of the
area, although northerly gap winds will develop in the western
Brooks Range on Wednesday. A shortwave trough will bring increased
chances for snow for Friday and Saturday. A surface low associated
with this trough will will move east along the Arctic Coast late
Friday and Saturday and will produce a period of northwest winds
over a long fetch across the Chukchi Sea that will impact the
Chukchi Sea Coast. We will need to monitor closely potential for
elevated surf along the Western North Slope over the weekend. The
models are hinting that strong easterly winds will develop across
the coast for late Sunday into Monday.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...Elevated surf is possible
for the north side of St. Lawrence Island as well as Diomede
Wednesday into Wednesday night as a strong low moves from the
north Pacific into Bristol Bay. A strong low will move into the
southern Bering Sea on Saturday. This may bring coastal impacts
for the weekend; however, at the moment there is still a lot of
uncertainty in the exact details. A low pressure system will pass
to the north of Utqiagvik on late Friday and Saturday and will
produce northwest wind over a long fetch over the Chukchi Sea
that will impact the Western North Slope Coast late Friday and
Saturday. Will need to monitor closely for potential for elevated
surf.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.
