Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.DISCUSSION...

An active weather pattern will continue through the week, bringing
periods of unsettled weather to much of northern Alaska. A weather
front is bringing gusty to winds to the eastern Arctic Coast, as
well as rainfall to the eastern Arctic Coast and the Brooks Range.
A series of weather systems will bring the potential for heavy
rainfall as they move from west to east over the West Coast and
the Interior. This rainfall will likely cause additional rises on
Interior rivers. A Flood Watch has been issued for the Western
Alaska Range, including the Denali Park area, for Tuesday and
Wednesday as there is the potential for another inch to an inch
and a half of rain to fall.

Aloft, a longwave trough over the eastern Arctic extends south
across the eastern Beaufort, with the trough axis stretching south
into the Northwestern Territories and the Yukon Territory. Within
the long wave trough, a number of lows and shortwaves will rotate
through the flow across the Arctic through midweek. A ridge axis
stretching northeast across the Aleutians and into the western
Interior will slide eastward Monday and begin to flatten across
the middle of the state by Tuesday. Further west, a low south of
Chukotka will continue to move north tonight and Monday, absorbing
a weaker low currently over the Chukotsk Peninsula.

Models...Models are in fair agreement with the general synoptic
scale pattern through Tuesday, before differences model spread
begins to increase greatly.

North Slope and Brooks Range: A weather front will push south
today over the eastern half of the North Slope. This system will
bring rainfall to the Beaufort Sea Coast and the eastern half of
the Brooks Range. Areas in the favored upslope locations will see
an additional quarter to half an inch of rainfall through
tonight. This will cause some rises in rivers that drain the north
side of the eastern Brooks Range, especially in rivers east of
the Sag River. This system is currently bring gusty westerly winds
to areas long the coast today, with gusts to 45 mph observed east
of Utqiagvik. The strongest winds are east of Deadhorse. A
weather front moving in from the southwest will spread rainfall
over the North Slope Monday night.

West Coast and Western Interior: Areas of stratus and patchy fog
persist this afternoon and are expected to continue into the
overnight hours. Showers continue across St Lawrence Island to the
Seward Peninsula this afternoon. A weather front approaching the
West Coast on Monday will push west across the Western Interior
Monday and Monday night, bringing the next round of rain to the
region, with the potential for heavy rainfall. A second round of
rainfall is expected on Tuesday, as another surge of moisture
pushes across the region. High temperatures will range from the
mid 50s to the mid 60s.

Central and Eastern Interior: Fairly quiet conditions expected
tonight and for the first half of the day Monday. Isolated showers
possible near the Canadian Border this afternoon and evening. A
weather front will push east across the Interior Monday evening
and Tuesday. Rainfall amounts of over half an inch over a wide
swath of the Interior between Monday evening and Tuesday
afternoon. This front will also cause increased southwesterly
winds across the Interior, with areas in higher terrain northeast
of Fairbanks seeing gusts to 35 mph Monday night into Tuesday
morning. A second round of rain will move east across the Interior
Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday. This second round of rainfall
will bring another quarter to three quarters of an inch of
rainfall to the southern Interior. Highs Monday will be in the
upper 60s to low 70s. High temperatures in the low to mid 60s
expected Tuesday and Wednesday.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

.FIRE WEATHER...
Relatively quiet on the next few days. Minimum RH values are
expected to remain above 40 percent through the upcoming week. A
weather system will push from west to east over the Interior late
Monday into Tuesday bringing a round of wetting rainfall. A
second system will move over the southern Interior late Tuesday
into Wednesday bringing another round of wetting rainfall.

.HYDROLOGY...
Many rivers in the Interior remain high, but are currently on a
a very slow downward trend. A series of weather systems that are
expected to move across the state between the Alaska and Brooks
Ranges early this week will bring over an inch of rainfall in a 48
hour period to a wide swath of the southern Interior through
Wednesday. This will cause increased flow in rivers and streams.
In the Western Alaska Range, where recent heavy rains brought
flooding, an inch to an inch and a half of rain is expected to
fall Tuesday through Wednesday. A Flood Watch has been issued for
the Western Alaska Range, including the Denali Park area, for
Tuesday through Wednesday. Rainfall associated with a weather
front moving south today over the eastern Brooks Range will cause
rises in the rivers that drain the north side of the eastern
Brooks Range, especially those east of the Sag River.
