...WIND ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 9 AM WEDNESDAY TO
MIDNIGHT AKDT WEDNESDAY NIGHT...

* LOCATION...Alaska Highway from Tok west to Dot Lake. 
  Additionally, gusty southwest winds up to 35 mph are expected 
  across the higher terrain north of the highway. 

* WINDS...Southwest at 20 to 30 mph gusting to 40 mph.

* TIMING...Winds will increase Wednesday morning and remain 
  strong into the evening. 

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A Wind Advisory means that strong winds are occurring or
expected. Travel may be difficult. Secure loose objects which may
be blown about by the wind.

Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.DISCUSSION...
Unsettled weather continues with cloudy skies, scattered showers,
and near seasonal temperatures today across the Interior as a
weak Arctic boundary remains situated over the middle of the
State. A series of north Pacific lows will move north across the
state this week, resulting in widespread unsettled weather. The
North Slope continues to see widespread low stratus and areas of
fog throughout the week as persistent high pressure to the north
facilitates onshore flow. Light snow is possible for much of the
Arctic Coast as a front sweeps north across the Brooks Range
Wednesday into Thursday. Gusty chinook winds and low relative
humidity levels along and near the Alaska Range and areas to the
immediate north of the Alaska Range today have prompted Red Flag
Warnings today into early this evening.

Aloft at 500 mb...
A deep, and high amplitude long wave trough extends from near the
north pole southward through the Bering Strait, through the
Central Aleutians and southward to into the sub tropical pacific
will continue to spin a series of shortwaves north over Alaska
through the week. The Western Interior and West Coast will receive
the most precipitation which is expected to be rain at all but
higher elevations through the week as southerly chinook downslope
winds will limit precipitation from Fairbanks and east through
Wednesday. As upper level winds shift to the southwest moisture
will push east and northeast into the central and eastern interior
and will lower Fire Weather concerns Wednesday. Minimum relative
humidity levels along and just north of the Alaksa Range will drop
again on Thursday as surface and upper level winds turn southerly
again.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
High pressure over the high Arctic will continue to support
northeasterly winds resulting in widespread low stratus and areas
of fog. A front will swing north across the Brooks Range early
Wednesday. Snow accumulation up to 2 inches is possible through
Thursday across much of the Brooks Range with less than an inch
likely near the coast.

West Coast and Western Interior...
A 980 mb low currently over Bristol Bay will continue to move
north and west into the lower YK Delta this morning and will stall
through Wednesday bringing another round of rain and showers over
much of the West Coast and Western Interior south of the Seward
Peninsula today and north of the Seward Peninsula and into the
Western Brooks Range through Wednesday morning. Several inches of
snow is expected at higher elevations of the Brooks Range.
Rainfall totals through Wednesday of one quarter to one half inch
are expected with the highest amounts expected across the Y-K
Delta and southerly upslope favored areas.

Central and Eastern Interior...
The 980 mb low currently over Bristol Bay will push a front north
over the Alaska Range this evening. Ahead of the front today
expect dry and windy conditions along and near the northern
foothills of the Alaska Range as well as the Deltana and Tanana
Flats. As the front sweeps north into the southern Interior
tonight southwest winds will push a more moist airmass northeast
into the central and eastern interior and will help limit fire
weather concerns in these areas on Wednesday. See the FIRE WEATHER
section for more details. By early Wednesday, southwest winds
will allow rain to develop across much of the Interior. Chances
for rain will remain fairly low across the Tanana Valley from
Delta Junction east.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

.FIRE WEATHER...
Red Flag Warnings have been issued across the Deltana and Tanana Flats,
primarily from Delta Junction South to Isabel Pass. Chinook winds
are expected to increase this morning and drying down slope winds
will produce minimum relative humidity levels dropping into the
20 to 30 percent range this afternoon and early evening before
moisture increases late tonight and Wednesday. South winds will
gust to 45 mph at times in these areas today and evening and will
diminish tonight. Relative humidity is expected to increase this
evening with passage of a strong weather front tonight. A shift in
winds to the southwest behind the front will bring rain to much
of the Interior, though the immediate area north of the Alaska
Range from Delta Junction east will still likely remain shadowed
out. However, minimum relative humidity Wednesday should be well
above 30 percent across the region.

.HYDROLOGY...
Warming temperatures this week should speed up snow melt and
cause break up to become more active by the middle of the week.
All ice south of the Brooks Range is rotting and not safe to
travel across.
