.DISCUSSION...
Synopsis...Cooler temperatures are on the way for the Interior as
colder air moves southwest out of the Arctic. The passage of a
cold front will result in strong and gusty winds across northern
Alaska. Light snow is expected to accompany the front over the
Central and Eastern Interior Tuesday and linger through Tuesday
night across the Eastern Alaska Range. Minimal precipitation is
expected elsewhere.

Aloft, at 500 mb, a ridge stretching from southeast Alaska
northwest to the Chukchi Sea this afternoon, will weaken tonight
as a shortwave moves northeast into Norton Sound and bisects the
ridge. The northern portion of the ridge will move west across the
Chukotsk Peninsula, extending south across the Bering Sea by
Thursday, while the southern half weakens and dissipates over the
northern Gulf of Alaska. As the shortwaves moves east across the
Interior during the day Tuesday, it will merge with a trough
diving southwest out the Canadian Archipelago and moving southwest
across the state Tuesday and Wednesday. By Wednesday night, a low
sprats from the rough over southern Alaska and remains in place
through Friday.

Surface...Broad high pressure remains in place across the state
this afternoon. A 1041 mb high centered 300 NM northwest of
Utqiagvik will strengthen overnight and Tuesday to 1045 mb as it
moves east to be 300 NM north of Utqiagvik Tuesday afternoon. The
high weakens to 1038 mb by Wednesday afternoon, as it moves
southeast to be centered 250 NM northwest of Prudhoe Bay and to
1027 mb Thursday afternoon as it moves to be 175 NM northwest of
Prudhoe Bay.

A 976 mb low 350 NM southwest of Shemya this afternoon will deepen
to 973 mb as it moves northwest tonight to be 200 NM south of
Shemya Tuesday morning. The low will continue to deepen to be a
969 mb low as it moves west northwest to be 400 NM west of the
southern Kamchatka Peninsula by Tuesday afternoon, with a trough
extending eastward across the Aleutians. The low will deepen to
967 mb by Wednesday afternoon as it slowly moves westward towards
the Kamchatka Peninsula, weakening Thursday.

Models...12Z model suite initialized fairly well against the 12Z
RAOBS and the 12Z and 18Z surface obs. Models are in fair
agreement through Thursday; after that model solutions begin to
diverge with the placement of the major features.

North Slope and Brooks Range: Fairly quiet conditions expected for
the region through Thursday. High pressure moving south and east
over the Arctic will result in winds shifting to the east. Winds
will increase from Wainwright west starting tonight, with the
strongest winds occurring from Point Lay west Tuesday and
Wednesday withe ast winds of 15 to 25 mph with gusts to 35 mph.
Further east, winds will be in the 5 to 15 mph range. Temperatures
will be trending downward Tuesday and Wednesday.

West Coast and Western Interior: Overall quiet conditions with the
exception of strong and gusty easterly winds Wednesday into
Thursday. East winds will increase to 15 to 30 mph from Kotzebue
south on Wednesday and remain gusty through Thursday. Partly
cloudy skies Tuesday, with skies clearing Wednesday and Thursday
and generally precip free. Slightly cooler temperatures Wednesday
and Thursday.

Central and Eastern Interior: A cold front pushing across the
Interior will bring cooler temperatures for the latter half of the
work week, as well as strong and gusty winds, and light snow.
Northeast to east winds will begin to increase late Tuesday and
will likely approach wind advisory criteria over the summits and
channeled areas of the Central Interior on Wednesday. In the
Middle Tanana Valley, winds will be gusty but are expected to stay
below wind advisory criteria. Light snow will accompany the front
Tuesday, with snow lingering across the Eastern Alaska Range
Tuesday night. Snowfall accumulations will generally be les than
an inch, with the exception of the upslope areas of the Eastern
Alaska Range, where one to three inches are expected. Glazed
snowpack with recent warm temperatures over the interior summits
should prevent low visibilities in blowing snow. High temperatures
Wednesday and Thursday will range from the upper teens near
Arctic Village to the lower to mid 20s near Fort Yukon and the
lower 30s around Fairbanks. The gusty winds will prevent low
temperatures from dropping below zero for most valley locations
in the Interior.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

.FIRE WEATHER...
A cold front pushing into the Interior will bring much cooler and
windy conditions late Tuesday and Wednesday. Minimum RH values
will drop into the upper 40s Tuesday along the northern slopes of
the Alaska Range and into the 50s and 60s to the north and west of
Fairbanks. Lower RH values expected Wednesday with minimum RH
values in the upper 20s to lower 30s along the northern slopes of
the Alaska Range and into the mid 30s to lower 50s north of
Fairbanks. Expect gusty east to northeast winds to develop over
much of the Interior by late Tuesday, increasing Wednesday, and
remaining gusty through at least Thursday.

.HYDROLOGY...
Early breakup continues with reports that the Nenana River is
now flowing at Nenana and a small ice jam reported downstream of
the Boondocks on the Tanana River. No flooding has been reported
with this ice jam, but we will continue to monitor the situation.
The snow pack in the interior continues to melt out with the snow
depth at Fairbanks now down to four inches. Expect the rate of
snow melt to slow some as the cooler conditions move into the
area Tuesday and Wednesday. Temperatures will struggle to reach
freezing Wednesday through Friday. Caution should be used if
venturing out on ice covered rivers and lakes as they breakup at
different rates.
