.DISCUSSION...
A front will bring precipitation to the Interior today. The
precipitation is mainly expected to be in the form of snow;
however, it is not out of the question that the precipitation
could begin as rain before transition over to snow. This will be
the main forecast challenge for us on this shift.

Aloft, at 500 mb, a 488 dam low is currently positions over
Wrangel Island while a ridge is situated over the Canadian Border.
This setup is bringing a southerly flow pattern to much of the
forecast area. A shortwave will move north over the central
Interior today and will move over the Beaufort Sea coast this
evening. The flow aloft will turn move southwesterly behind the
shortwave as the ridge builds west over the Alaska Range and the
YK Delta. The low that is currently over Wrangel Island will move
off to the north east on Wednesday. Wednesday night the flow
aloft over the forecast area will turn more southerly as the ridge
retreats back to the east. The ridge will build back west
Thursday night and by Friday morning the ridge axis will stretch
from Point Hope to Eagle.

Central and Eastern Interior: Snowfall is expected today from a
cold front that will move from southeast to northwest across the
Interior today. The heaviest snow is expected in the in the
preferred upslope areas just south of the Brooks Range where 3 to
5 inches of snow is expected. West of Fairbanks, one to two
inches of snow is expected with the system today, while from
Fairbanks east, we expect less than one inch of snow (although
Isabel Pass may see up to 4 inches of snow at pass level). We
can't completely rule out that rain (or freezing rain) may mix in
with the snow initially when the precipitation begins; however,
the strong cold air advection will cause the precipitation to
change over to all snow rather quickly after onset. Any snowfall
will taper off from south to north this afternoon and evening.
There will be another round of snow Wednesday night into early
Thursday, mainly for areas to the north and west of Fairbanks
(southerly downslope winds will keep the precipitation out of
Fairbanks). One to five inches of snow is expected with this next
system, with the heaviest amounts expected in the preferred
upslope areas just south of the Brooks Range. With the cold front,
today is expected to be the coldest day of the week. Tonight will
be the coldest night of the week due to some expected clearing
behind the front; however, temperatures tonight will still be
above normal. Temperatures are expected to remain well above
normal for the rest of the week.

North Slope and Brooks Range: A front will bring snowfall today to
the eastern half of the Brooks Range and the eastern north slope.
Most places east of Utqiagvik will see 1 to 3 inches of snow.
Snowfall amounts will be slightly higher on the south side of the
Brooks Range where up to 5 inches of snow is possible. A surface
low moving to the north through the northern Yukon Territory will
cause westerly winds to pick up this evening along the eastern
Beaufort Sea coast causing blowing snow to develop. I opted to
issue a Blizzard Warning for this evening for zone 204 in
anticipation expected strong winds and blowing snow. Elsewhere,
winds will pick up this evening along the Chukchi Sea coast as a
front associated with a low moving north through the Chukchi Sea
passes overhead. As the front passes through, the visibility will
briefly drop down to a half of a mile in blowing snow. I opted to
issue a Winter Weather advisory for zone 201 in anticipation of
the gusty winds and associated blowing snow. A cooling trend is
expected for most locations across the North Slope through
Thursday.

West Coast and Western Interior: A front that brought snow to the
western Interior overnight will move north and east during the day
today. Any lingering snowfall will taper off this morning as the
front moves away. A front will bring snowfall to the western
Interior and the Yukon Delta Wednesday night and Thursday before
moving off to the west. The pressure gradient will tighten up over
the west coast on Wednesday as a low approaches Bristol Bay
combined with high pressure building in over the Chukotsk
Peninsula. As the gradient tightens up we will see north winds
with gusts around 30 mph that will persist into Friday. The winds
will be combined with falling snow on Thursday as snow pushes in
from the east resulting in reduced visibilities in blowing snow.
After Thursday, the models have some differences with how they
handle the precipitation on the west coast with the GFS having
higher QPF numbers when compared with the ECMWF.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.
