Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.DISCUSSION...

Synopsis...Broad area of low pressure remains over the state with
several lows moving up the West Coast spreading precipitation to
the area again today. A short beak tonight, then another low
moving up the coast. Winds have diminished on the Chukchi Sea
Coast will bring periods of snow to most of the forecast area
today. Precipitation pretty sparse in the Central and Eastern
Interior, but expect some flurries or a period of light snow north
and east of the Middle Tanana Valley tomorrow. Winds becoming
strong and gusty near passes in the Alaska Range Thursday into
Friday morning.

Models...13/00Z solutions are in good agreement for the very short
term, and show better agreement as they move into the midrange.
They do continue to struggle with the more active pattern that we
have seen the last week or so. SREF/NAM blend continues to be the
go to solution for precipitation, so will lean that direction
again today. NAM/NAMDNG solution has performed well for winds so
will use it again today. Solutions indicate a gradual warming
trend through the weekend.

Aloft...At 500 hpa...Ridging has flattened out over the state as
a shortwave moves northeast out of the Eastern Interior this
morning and over the Yukon Territory. A trough extends southwest
across the Southeast Arctic to Cape Lisburne from a 479 dam low
high in the Canadian Archipelago. The trough will lift offshore
today as ridging over the Interior pushes north over the Arctic
Coast by tonight. A 519 dam high over the Siberian Coast 100 nm
southwest of Wrangel Island will move to 200 nm north of Wrangel
Island by Thursday morning, then moves east and merges with
the primary ridge as it moves offshore. A 504 dam low southeast of
Kodiak Island will move over Cook Inlet and dissipate tonight. A
508 dam low will move out of Siberia southeast across the Bering
Sea to 150 nm north of the Pribilofs by Thursday morning. A
shortwave will push into the ridge over the Central and Eastern
Interior tonight and Thursday as it moves northeast. At 850
hpa...The -10C isotherm lies generally along the south slopes of
the Brooks Range and over 170W, while the -20C isotherm has been
pushed north over the coast since last night. The -10C isotherm
will continue to move north to be over the Arctic Coast by
Thursday afternoon as temperatures over the Interior rise 2C to
5C. A pool of cold air will spin over the West Coast Thursday
night and Friday as the -10C isotherm is pushes east over the
Western Interior.

Surface...Broad area of low pressure over the state with a 991 mb
low near St lawrence Island, a 986 mb low near Bristol Bay, and a
972 mb low 200 nm southeast of Kodiak Island. High pressure is
pushing in over the Eastern Interior, but will be pushed east this
evening as leeside troughing develops north of the Alaska Range
as the low near Bristol Bay moves across the southwest mainland to
St Lawrence Island by Thursday evening. High pressure will persist
over the Arctic as a 1025 mb center 200 nm north of Wainwright
continues to move east and will move to Banks Island this evening
at 1029 mb with ridging extending W along 74N. The broad area of
low pressure over mainland Alaska will push north over the
nearshore waters as ridging across the Arctic slides north to lie
along 76N.

Arctic Coast and Brooks Range...Pressure gradient has tightened
up over the Northwest Arctic Coast, so have issued Winter Weather
Advisory for zone 201 for Wind Chill and blowing snow. Expect
winds to increase through the morning from Point Lay southwest and
visibility to decrease in Blowing Snow. Winds over the remainder
of the area 10 to 20 mph from the northeast to east. Temperatures
are slowly warming. Mostly cloudy inland as trough holds clouds
over the Brooks Range and Plains. Along the Central Arctic Coast
generally partly cloudy unless stratus develops over open leads
near the coast and moves over the area.

West Coast and Western Interior...Cloudy with a mix of
precipitation north to the Seward Peninsula and snow north of
that. There is a break coming as it will taper off from the south
this evening, but more precipitation moving north into the area
Thursday night into Friday. Precipitation is also expected in the
Western Interior. Most areas will see less than 1 inch of
accumulation. The heaviest snow through Thursday morning will be
along the south slopes of the Brooks Range with around 2 inches
expected.

Central and Eastern Interior...Mostly cloudy the next couple
days. A few flurries or a period of light snow north and east of
the Middle Tanana Valley Thursday as an upper level trough moves
across the area. Winds generally light except near the Alaska
Range they will pick up through the day gusting around 40 mph,
then increase Thursday with some gusts around 50 mph into Friday
near passes. Temperatures will be slowly warming through the
weekend, then cool some Monday and Tuesday.

Extended forecast for days 4 to 7...Mostly dry in the Interior
through the weekend and into Monday. A weather front will move
up the West Coast and into the Arctic Saturday with precipitation
lingering over the area as a low moves to Norton Sound Sunday
evening. A short break between low on the West Coast Monday
morning before yet another low moves to the Bering Strait Monday
afternoon. A decaying weather front will move into the Western
Interior Monday, then slowly move east Tuesday into the Central
Interior before stalling over the area into Wednesday morning
before dissipating. Temperatures will be warming in the Central
and Eastern Interior, Eastern Brooks Range, and Eastern Arctic
Coast with highs in the Central Interior Saturday through Monday
in the low 40s. Cooler temperatures Monday and Tuesday on the West
Coast and in the Western Interior.
