LIGHTNING FOR YUKON FLATS AND SURROUNDING UPLANDS...

The National Weather Service in Fairbanks has issued a Red Flag
Warning for lightning, which is in effect until midnight AKDT
tonight.

* LIGHTNING ACTIVITY LEVEL...4.

* TIMING...Thunderstorm activity is expected this afternoon and 
  evening.

* WINDS...Northwest 5 to 10 mph with gusts up to 25 mph.

* HUMIDITY...As low as 25 percent.

* TEMPERATURES...as high as 84.

* IMPACTS...Ample lightning could lead to numerous new fire 
  starts.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A Red Flag Warning means that conditions are occurring or will
occur which could lead to the development of large and dangerous
fires. It is directed toward fire agencies, and through them, to

UPLANDS...MIDDLE TANANA VALLEY AND DELTANA AND TANANA FLATS...

The National Weather Service in Fairbanks has cancelled the Red
Flag Warning.

Lightning activity has decreased over the area and is expected to
remain below Lightning Activity Level 4, however very isolated
thunderstorms will continue through 2 AM.

Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.DISCUSSION...
Warm and dry conditions will continue over the area for the next
couple days. Active thunderstorm days are expected especially
over the southern interior with isolated and scattered
thunderstorms expected this afternoon and evening as well as
Sunday afternoon and evening.

Central and Eastern Interior: Warm and dry conditions will
continue today and linger into Sunday with temperatures likely
rising to around 80 today and the upper 70s on Sunday.  We are
expecting scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms in the
afternoon and evening hours both today and Sunday. On Sunday, a
shortwave trough will move across the Interior. This will push the
upper level ridge that has been positioned over the Interior the
past few days off to the east into the Yukon Territory. A cooling
trend in temperatures is expected for early next week as the
ridge moves away. The shortwave will be a forcing mechanism for
thunderstorms. This will likely bring more organized convection as
the shortwave moves across. If you have outdoor plan in the
Fairbanks area Sunday afternoon and evening, please be prepared
for thunderstorms to move through. Any thunderstorms that develop
over the next few days have the potential for gusty winds small
hail and frequent lightning.

North Slope and Brooks Range: The above normal temperatures of the
last couple days will return to near normal over the Arctic Coast
today as an area of high pressure will builds over the Arctic
Ocean and Actic Coast. Winds will become more northerly and
temperatures along the coast will decrease. This will also
increase the chances for fog and low clouds developing along the
coast. Away from the coast, we are expecting showers and
thunderstorms again this afternoon and evening. The models are
suggesting that some of the thunderstorms north of the Brooks
Range could be rather strong, especially for such a northern
latitude. Some of the storms will produce gusty winds and small
hail and frequent lightning.

West Coast and Western Interior: Satellite and observations
continue to show an extensive area of fog and low stratus across
the Bering Sea and Southern Chukchi Sea, Kotzebue Sound as well as
Norton Sound from Nome west.  Isolated thunderstorms are expected
this afternoon and again today and Sunday. The greatest chance
for thunderstorms each day will be mainly east of a line from
Galena to McGrath.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

.FIRE WEATHER...
Hot and dry weather will continue over the Interior today and will
begin to slowly cool down Sunday and will continue into early
next week. Temperatures will peak again around 80 today and in the
upper 70s on Sunday. Minimum RH vales will generally be in the 30
to 40 percent across the western and central Interior with values
falling 25 percent or less in the eastern Interior, with the
driest conditions expected in the Yukon Flats. Winds will pick
north of the Yukon River Saturday evening. As the winds pick up we
may see near Red Flag conditions in zone 220 Saturday evening.
Current thinking is that the strongest winds will be overnight
hours (and thus not coincident with the warmest temperatures and
lowest RH values). We will have to keep a close eye on the
thunderstorms over the central and eastern interior. We are
expecting wet thunderstorms, but high based thunderstorms with
abundant lightning. Lighting activity levels between 3 and 4 are
expected this afternoon. Near Red Flag conditions for both Hot Dry
and Windy as well as Lighting will be possible this afternoon in
the Central and Eastern Interior. Temperatures look to cool
slightly for Sunday with a more pronounced cooling trend in the
Interior on Monday. Minimum RH values are expected to come up as
the temperatures cool. Thunderstorm activity will be mainly east
of Northway to Arctic Village line today and nearly all of the
Interior on Saturday and Sunday. The thunderstorm activity on
Sunday will be a little bit more organized than today, and thus,
there is better potential for lightning strikes over a larger area
of the Interior as a upper level disturbance moves through the
area.

.HYDROLOGY...
High freezing levels in the 9500 to 10000 foot level will produce
increased run off on glacially fed rivers such as the Tanana.
Freezing levels will slowly drop over the next several days as
temperatures cool.
