Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.DISCUSSION...
A relatively quiet day is expected across most of northern Alaska
today. The only issue today is some snow that is expected to fall in
the western Brooks Range and the northwest Arctic. Gusty wind are
expected to develop on Thursday along the west coast (mainly
south of the Bering Strait) and along the north side of the
Alaska Range (especially near passes). We do have some challenges
with the current forecast models. The models aren't in the best of
agreement with the overall synoptic scale pattern after about 24
hours. In addition, the run to run consistency of the models
hasn't been that great over the past few days after about 48
hours.

Aloft, at 500 mb, a broad ridge is currently in place over much
of northern Alaska this morning with a 525 dam low situated over
the Chukotsk Peninsula. This low will move to near Point Hope by
early Thursday where it will remain quasi-stationary into the
weekend. As the low moves to the northeast it will split the
ridge in two, with part of the ridge moving over the Chukotsk
Peninsula and part over the eastern Interior. A 511 dam low will
move north into Bristol Bay Thursday night. The combination of the
low near Bristol Bay and the low near Point Hope will form a
broad trough that will stretch across the western half of the
forecast area on Friday. A ridge building east over the Bering Sea
Friday night will push the low near Bristol Bay into the northern
Gulf of Alaska on Saturday.

Central and Eastern Interior: Today will be relatively quiet
across the Interior with some isolated to scatted showers,
primarily to the north and east of Fairbanks. Most areas across
the Interior will see temperatures a little bit warmer than
yesterday. The warming tend will continue for Thursday. On
Thursday temperatures will reach the upper 50s across parts of
the Tanana Valley while Fort Yukon will see temperatures
approaching 50 degrees (temperatures in the 40s will be seen as
far north as Bettles). A trough of low pressure will set up on the
north side of the Alaska Range on Thursday. This will cause
southerly gap winds to develop near passes on the north side of
the Alaska Range. Wind gusts as high as 45 mph are expected along
the Richardson Highway from Delta Junction south through Isabel
Pass. The gap winds will continue in the Alaska Range through
Friday night; however, at the moment,we expect the strongest winds
on Thursday. Temperatures on Friday look to be a little bit cooler
than Thursday for most locations.

North Slope and Brooks Range: A northward moving shortwave will
bring some snow to the western Brooks Range as well as the western
half of the North Slope. The heaviest snowfall is expected in the
western Brooks Range where upslope flow will bring two to four
inches of snow to south facing slopes. Up to two inches is
possible through Thursday morning along the Arctic Coast west of
Utqiagvik. Light snow showers will continue for the western
Arctic Coast into Friday as an upper low remains in place over
Point Hope. The pressure gradient will tighten up over the Arctic
Coast Thursday resulting in the development of strong easterly
winds. Wind gusts as strong as 40 mph are not out of the question
by Thursday night, with the strongest winds expected to the east
of Utqiagvik. The gusty easterly winds look to continue into the
weekend as a strong area of high remains in place over the
Beaufort Sea and a broad area of low pressure remains in place
over much of northern Alaska. As the winds pick up along the coast
we expect some blowing snow to develop reducing the visibility to
under a mile at times to the east of Utqiagvik. High temperatures
north of the Brooks Range over the next few day will generally be
in the 5 to 15 degree (above) range with low temperatures
expected to range from the single digits below to the single
digits above zero.

West Coast and Western Interior: Some light snow is expected for
the Kobuk and Noatak Valleys today. Rain may mix in with the snow
at times in the afternoon. Any precipitation should mostly taper
off by this evening. Elsewhere, we aren't really anticipating any
major issue for today. A strong low will move north into the
southern Bering Sea tonight. This will cause gusty easterly winds
to increase tonight and Thursday along the west coast (south of
the Bering Strait) as well as for St. Lawrence Island. The low
will move east Thursday night and Friday. As the low moves to the
east the winds will gradually decrease and will shift to a more
northerly direction.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

.FIRE WEATHER...
Minimum relative humidity values ranging from the lower 20 to the
lower 30 percent range are expected today in the upper and middle
Tanana Valley. On Thursday we expect even drier conditions with
much of the upper and middle Tanana Valley seeing minimum RH
values below 25 percent. In addition, strong southerly gap winds
are expected to develop near Alaska Range Thursday as a trough of
low pressure strengthens along the north side of the Alaska Range.
Sustained winds of 20 to 30 mph are expected near passes on
Thursday with gusts to around 45 mph. Areas along the Richardson
Highway from Delta Junction south to Isabel Pass will likely see
meteorological Red Flag conditions Thursday afternoon. The
southerly gap winds will continue for Friday; however, current
thinking is that the winds will be weaker on Friday. In addition
minimum relative humidity values look to be a little bit higher on
Friday.

.HYDROLOGY...
Many stations in the Middle and Upper Tanana will see temperatures
in the 40s to lower 50s the remainder of the week with highs in
the 30s to lower 40s as far north as Bettles, and in the Yukon
Territory. No significant precipitation is expected in Interior
Alaska or the Yukon Territory. With warming temperatures and
freezing levels rising to 3500 to 5000 feet, means breakup will be
accelerating, so extreme caution should be used crossing any of
the Interior rivers as the ice continues to rot and be eroded from
below, and runoff will be moving into the mainstem rivers.
Caution should also be used on lakes as the ice melts at different
rates.
