Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.DISCUSSION...
The active weather pattern continues for northern Alaska into
next week. A mix of rain and snow continues to fall across the
Central Interior this morning along a weak frontal system
that will push into the Eastern Interior this evening. A strong
low pressure system continues to deepen and will impact all of
Western Alaska as a strong front approaches the West Coast
this evening where Coastal Flood Warnings have been issued for
Norton Sound and the Lower YK Delta, and Coastal Flood Advisories
have been issued for St Lawrence Island, the Bering Strait, Norton
Sound and the Southern Chukchi Sea Coat. The strong weather front
will push east through Northern Alaska Friday and Saturday. This
storm will bring the potential for coastal flooding to the West
Coast, as well as heavy snow to the Brooks Range and Alaska Range
and light snow accumulations to most of the Interior even at
Valley locations.

Models...The 03/00Z model suite initialized fairly well against
the 00z surface analysis and verified well against the 06z
surface analysis. Models continue in fair agreement through the
short term period, with primary differences in the timing and
placement of the low moving into the Chukchi Sea. Considerable
model spread exists between model families and from run to run in
the extended range especially on the track and strength of the
next deep low pressure system entering the Western Bering Sea on
Monday.

North Slope and Brooks Range: Areas of stratus and fog persist
across the North Slope this morning. A 994 mb low 150 nm NW of
Point Hope this morning will move rapidly northwest leaving a
weak weather front stretched along the North Slope today that
will produce a few showers today. Southeast winds this morning
will become more southerly and southwesterly through the day
today.

West Coast and Western Interior: Weather across the West Coast
and Western Interior will be dominated by a broad area of low
pressure rotating over the Bering and Chukchi Seas. A 994 mb low
currently 150 nm NW of Point Hope this morning will move rapidly
northwest as a 985 mb low currently over the Gulf of Anadyr moves
east across the Bering Sea today, rapidly intensifying as it
approaches the West Coast this afternoon and evening. Friday,
this low will shifts north to just northwest of the Seward
Peninsula in the Southern Chukchi Sea before looping around and
diving back to the southeast across the Seward Peninsula again and
the Western Interior over the weekend. This will lead to significant
impacts along the West Coast in the way of strong winds and
coastal flooding. An extended period of very strong winds is
expected, with winds of 30 to 40 mph with gusts to 55 mph
possible from the Bering Strait south. These strong south to
southwest winds combined with a long fetch will result in storm
surge of 5 to 10 feet in Norton Sound early Friday morning through
Sunday morning. Along the Y-K Delta, storm surge of 5 to 7 feet
is expected, and 3 to 5 feet of storm surge is expected for St
Lawrence Island and the Bering Strait Coast. Coastal Flood
Warnings have been issued for zones 211, 212, and 214. Coastal
Flood Advisories have been issued for zones 213, 207 and 209 for
the Chukchi Sea Coast, as well as for eastern Kotzebue Sound for
storm surge of 3 to 5 feet for early Friday morning through Sunday
morning. Additionally, some areas will receive up to an inch of
rain through Saturday, and snow will accumulate over the higher
terrain, especially in the favored upslope areas. A Winter Storm
Warning has been issued for zone 208 for areas north of Kiana,
including the Red Dog Mine for snowfall amounts of 6 to 8 inches,
with localized amounts of up to 10 inches. A Winter Storm Warning
has also been issued from zone 217 for areas north of Ambler, for
snowfall of 8 to 12 inches, with localized amounts of up to 14
mph. Beyond this, there will be a brief reprieve on Sunday before
another storm takes aim at the West Coast early next week.

Central and Eastern Interior: A weak weather front will push
across the region today bringing another chance of more rain and
snow, with activity diminishing from west to east through the
day. A stronger front will push across the Interior Friday
bringing widespread precipitation. Heavy snow is anticipated
across the Southeastern Brooks Range and portions of the Upper
Koyukuk Valley and Winter Storm Warnings have been issued and are
in effect from 10 pm Thursday through 6 am Saturday. 8 to 12
inches of snow are expected from the Dalton Highway west in zone
218, with 8 to 10 inches of snow possible west and east of Bettles
in zone 219, including the Dalton Highway. Snow levels across the
eastern and southern Interior will rise to around 2000 feet,
today and early Friday ahead of the strong front that will move
through the Central Interior late Friday. Snow levels will drop
quickly to valley level after the front passes with light snow
accumulations of 1 to 2 inches expected at valley level Friday
night and Saturday and 2 to 4 inches expected over higher terrain
including the highway summits. Further south in the Alaska Range,
another 6 to 10 inches of snow is expected beginning late
Thursday night and continuing into Saturday. Winter Weather
Advisories have been issued for the Central and Eastern Alaska
Range.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...
See discussion in West Coast and Western Interior section above
for more details. Another storm will move into the Bering Sea
early next week. Coastal flooding may once again be possible, but
details are uncertain at this point. This situation will need to
be monitored.
