.DISCUSSION...
A strong low pressure system currently in the central Bering Sea
is causing winds to increase over St. Lawrence Island this
morning. Winds expected to increase throughout the day and
continue to impact the West Coast, mainly from Norton Sound to St.
Lawrence Island through tomorrow afternoon. Gale force winds
expected over marine areas south of the Bering Strait, with winds
gusting 45-55 mph along coastal regions around Norton Sound and on
St. Lawrence Island. Hazards along the coast will be limited to
high surf from Nome to Golovin, lasting from this morning to
tomorrow morning. Heavy rain will push into the Western Interior
with total accumulation up to a half inch from the Seward
Peninsula and south, with greater amounts exceeding a inch in
higher terrain of the Nulato Hills through tomorrow afternoon. Gap
winds through the Alaska Range expected to increase this
afternoon and last through tomorrow afternoon, with gusts to 60
mph.

Aloft, a shortwave over the central Interior will move northeast
off the eastern Arctic Coast by tomorrow evening. Showers
associated with this feature will become more scattered by
tonight. A ridge of high pressure will build over northern and
eastern Alaska behind this shortwave going into the weekend. A
strong upper level low currently over the central Bering Sea will
move to the West Coast by Thursday afternoon and then slide
southeast into the Gulf of Alaska by Saturday night. Models
indicate a ridge building into western Alaska to the Arctic Coast
by the end of the weekend.

At the surface, a strong low in the central Bering Sea will bring
a weather front to the West Coast by this afternoon with heavy
rain. This low pressure will slide to the southeast by Thursday
afternoon into the YK Delta. Rain will begin to dissipate along
the West Coast and the western Interior by early Friday morning as
the low pressure moves into the Gulf of Alaska by the weekend.
The deep low pressure will cause strong winds on Norton Sound and
St. Lawrence through Thursday afternoon. High pressure builds
north of the Arctic Coast going into the weekend.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
Dense fog occurring along the eastern Arctic Coast expected to
persist through the morning. Low ceilings and occasional fog
issues to continue throughout today. Heading into the evening
hours, dense fog expected for the same areas along the coast
through Thursday morning. East winds expected to increase as high
pressure builds north off the Arctic Coast going into the weekend.
Temperatures continuing to remain well above normal, but trending
down over the next couple of days.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Showers persisting this morning from Minto and east into the
Forty Mile Country. Showers expected to continue through this
afternoon and move east. A Wind Advisory is in effect this
evening through early Friday morning for the Alaska Range passes
with winds gusting to 60 mph. Chinook conditions expected to
develop late tonight, leading to drier conditions north of the
Alaska Range for Thursday. Temperatures expected to be around
normal today and then be well above normal going into the weekend.

West Coast and Western Interior...
Heavy rain will begin along the West Coast and into the Western
Interior this afternoon. Total precipitation accumulations of 0.50
inches expected along the Seward Peninsula and south with
localized amounts exceeding 1.00 inch in higher terrain along the
Nulato Hills. Strong winds gusting to 55 mph through Norton Sound
and St. Lawrence Island expected for this afternoon and will
persist into Thursday afternoon. High Surf Advisory remains in
effect from this morning to Thursday morning for beach erosion
from Nome to Golovin. Rain showers and strong winds will
dissipate Thursday night along the West Coast. Temperatures
expected to remain slightly above normal going into the weekend.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

.HYDROLOGY...
Rivers and streams in the western Brooks Range will remain high
going into the weekend as recent rainfall has caused significant
rises over the last few days. Caution should be taken at the
lagoon near Kivalina where the Wulik River empties due to a higher
volume of water entering the lagoon.

A strong Bering Sea storm will bring up to a half inch of rain
along the Seward Peninsula and south to the Nulato Hills, where
localized amounts may exceed one inch in higher terrain. Expect
rises in streams in these areas for the next couple of days.

...Strong Fall Storm Moving into the West Coast Today...

A strong fall storm currently in the central Bering Sea will move
into the eastern Bering Sea today, which will produce winds gusts
to 55 mph over Norton Sound and St. Lawrence Island.
Additionally, heavy rain along the West Coast and into the Western
Interior is expected for today through Thursday. Total rain
accumulations of a half inch along the Seward Peninsula and south,
with higher terrain in the Nulato Hills exceeding one inch of
rain through Thursday afternoon. A High Surf Advisory is in
effect from Nome to Golovin for beach erosion and possible damage
to the Nome Council Road beginning Wednesday morning through
Thursday morning. In addition, expect minor beach erosion in other
areas along southeast facing shores of the Seward Peninsula and
St. Lawrence Island during this time frame. Exercise caution
around small streams and rivers as the heavy rain will likely
produce rapid rises on small streams and rivers. Residents should
monitor the latest forecasts and updates on this developing storm.
