Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

OVERVIEW... Today will be similar to Friday over Northern Alaska,
with temperatures near normal and mostly sunny south of the
Brooks Range. Sunday will see temperatures warming to above normal
with sunny skies over Northern Alaska, then Monday and Tue will
see temperatures well above normal, with highs in the 30s over the
North Slope, in the 40s along the West Coast, and in the 50s and
lower 60s over the Interior. Temperatures will remain well above
normal for most of next week.

DISCUSSION...

Aloft...
The most dominant feature over Alaska is an amplified upper level
ridge that will continue to strengthen and move east across
mainland AK through Monday, remain in place Tuesday, then move
north Wed and into late next week. Skies will be mostly clear
through the weekend under the influence of the ridge, especialy in
the Interior. Temperatures will continue to rise through the
early part of the next week, with Monday and Tuesday being the
warmest days.

An upper level trough over Kamchatka and the Bering Sea will
gradually move eastward over the Bering Sea through early next
week. Several shortwaves will make their way north through the
Bering Sea. These will bring stratus and periods of rain/snow showers
along the Bering coast Sunday into early next week. The
persistent ridge over the Interior will limit very much inland
progression of this system, and the bulk of the precipitation will
remain over the Bering Sea.

Surface...
A strong ridge of high pressure over Interior Alaska will build
through Sunday, then begin to move off into Canada early next
week, and clear skies will persist through the remainder of the
weekend in the Interior under the ridge. Temperatures will
gradually increase throughout this period, with highs in the 50s
Sun and many locations in the Interior into the 60s Monday and
Tuesday. Pretty confident at this point that Tuesday will be the
warmest day across central and eastern Interior.

A low pressure trough extending from just off the northern Russian
coast into the Beaufort Sea and the North Slope has brought
stratus, fog, and occasional flurries to thet North Slope this
morning. Conditions are improving and will continue to improve as
winds along the Arctic coast have turned southerly and the trough
moves north further into the Arctic. Winds along the west coast
will relax some tonight before increasing to 20-30 kts again with
the approach of another front tomorrow night.

The second front is currently located just west of the Aleutians.
This system will make its way north and east into the Bering Sea
by Monday. This system will again not make it far inland due to
the persistent ridge. This system is expected to remain stronger
than the first, so south winds along the Bering coast will be a
little stronger with this system. St Lawrence Island will see
20-30 kt winds Sun night and into Mon, while much of the rest of
the west coast will see 25-35 kt winds Sun night through Mon night.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...
South winds 20-35kt blowing across the eastern Bering Sea Sat
through Mon will cause sea levels to rise 1-2 feet by Sun night
into Mon.

The slightly elevated water, combined with wave action
and warm temps will cause sea ice to break up significantly south
of the Bering Strait. This will push ice and slush onto beaches
south of the Bering Strait. No flooding issues expected.

.FIRE WEATHER...
RH values so far today have ranged from around 20-35% in the
Interior, with the lowest values in the Tanana Valley. RH will
again be as low as 20% Sunday and as low as 17-18% Monday,
remaining dry through Tuesday. Temperatures will gradually
increase with highs in the 50s Sunday to highs in the 60s Monday
and Tuesday. Winds will be light throughout this period.

.HYDROLOGY...
Will likely see significant snowmelt and some progress in river
breakup in the Interior next week, with temperatures warming into
the 50s and 60s. Temperatures along the North Slope and West Coast
next week will be above freezing as well.

Ice conditions can change rapidly. Extreme caution should be used
crossing ice on any rivers or lakes along the West Coast or
Interior as the ice continues to rot and weaken.
