Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
A weather system in the western Bering Sea will bring strong
winds, snow and blowing snow to areas along the west coast this
morning. A second low will bring another round of strong winds,
snow and blowing snow to the west coast on Tuesday. The Arctic
Coast will see increased winds and areas of blowing snow. Strong
southerly gap winds will continue in the Alaska Range. A warming
trend will continue for the Interior through mid week.

.DISCUSSION...
Overall the models are in decent out through the weekend. The
models do diverge some for early next week, especially with how
they handle the low moving through the Bering Sea Monday into
Tuesday. An upper level 495 dam low west of Saint Lawrence Island
will continue to track to the northwest and weaken. Another
strong upper level feature will move over Bristol Bay by Monday.

Surface...A 963 mb low west of St Lawrence Island will move into
the Gulf of Anadyr by Sunday afternoon. A 953 mb low will reach
Bristol Bay by Monday morning and will track to the northwest
across the Bering Sea on Tuesday.

Central and Eastern Interior...A warming trend will continue
across the Interior through mid week. Gap winds in the Alaska
range will persist through the morning then weaken this afternoon.
Winds will pick up again on Monday and continue into Tuesday.
A new issue of wind advisories for zones 223, 225 and 226 will
likely be needed for the afternoon forecast package. A front will
move to the north across the Interior on Sunday. This system will
bring a quick shot of snow to areas from Fairbanks north and west.
Fairbanks will see less than one inch of snow. Areas north and
west of Fairbanks will see 3 to 5 inches. A winter weather
advisory is still in effect for zone 219 through Sunday afternoon.

North Slope and Brooks Range...Strong easterly winds will
continue through Sunday afternoon with areas of low visibility in
blowing snow. Winter weather advisories are still in effect for
the north slope.

West coast...A 963 mb low west of Saint Lawrence Island will
continue to bring strong winds to the Island through this morning.
Another 953 mb low will reach Bristol Bay by Monday morning and
will track to the northwest across the Bering Sea on Tuesday. This
next low will bring another round of strong winds, snow and
blowing snow to the Yukon Delta and Saint Lawrence Island.
Headlines will likely be reissued for these areas Monday into
Tuesday.

...Elevated Surf Today...

Southerly winds will bring elevated water levels today to the
southern Seward Peninsula Coast today. Water levels are expected
to be 1 to 2 feet above the normal high tide line. Water levels
will drop overnight as winds become more easterly.
