Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.DISCUSSION...
Active weather pattern again this week for northern Alaska with
another round of wind, snow and freezing rain on the West Coast
and Western Interior Tuesday and Wednesday as well as high winds
along the northern foothills of the Alaska Range Tuesday night
into Thursday. Periods of light snow will continue over the
Central Interior today and tonight with light accumulations
expected. Another round of precipitation will push into the
Central Interior on Tuesday and Wednesday with mixed precipitation
possible north of Fairbanks and south of the Yukon River.

Models...The 17/12z model suite initialized well against the 12z
surface analysis and verified well against the 18z surface
analysis. The models continue to display minimal spread in the
short range but continue to struggle in the mid range and extended
range with considerable differences in track and strength of a
deep low moving into the Southern Bering Sea on Tuesday and
especially the second low moving into the southern Bering on
Thursday.

Aloft...the longwave trough over northern Alaska initially weakens
and drifts to the west and then deeps as a strong shortwave moves
north out of the Northern Pacific pushes into the Southern Bering
Sea on Tuesday. Ridging builds north over the Eastern Alaska and
the Yukon through Thursday. Shortwaves moving north along the
Ridge will provide multiple waves of strong winds over the Alaska
Range beginning Tuesday night and continuing through Friday and
will provide several wave of mixed precipitation over the West
Coast, the Western and Central Interior south of the Yukon River.
Snow is expected over the Northern Interior and Brooks Range
Tuesday night through Friday. Strong winds aloft moving over the
Alaska Range will produce a strong mountain wave on the Northern
Foothills of the Alaska Range and is expected to produce very
strong winds along and just north of the Alaska Range where High
Winds Watches have been issued beginning Tuesday night and
continuing into Thursday.

Surface...A 970 mb low currently over the Central Aleutians will
move north and east and will dissipate over Kodiak Island Monday
night while a 964 mb low moves rapidly north over western Bristol
Bay Tuesday morning. The low will deepen to 956 mb and will move
north into to near St Paul Island Tuesday afternoon. A front
rotating around the low will push into the lower YK Delta Tuesday
morning bringing another round of wind, snow and freezing rain to
the West Coast, the Western Interior Tuesday and Wednesday and to
the Central Interior Tuesday evening into Wednesday. Strong winds
will develop along the northern foothills of the Alaska Range
Tuesday night and continue into Thursday.

Interior: Light snow will continue tonight over the Central
Interior tonight, along a stalled frontal boundary with less than
an inch of snow expected. On Tuesday, Chinook flow will develop
over the Southern Interior. Strong southerly chinook winds
expected to develop in the Alaska Range. High wind watches have
been issued for the Central and Eastern Alaska Range as well as
the Deltana and Tanana Flats area near Delta Junction. A front
will push north over the Interior Tuesday night into Wednesday.
For areas from Fairbanks south, the Chinook winds will limit the
potential for precipitation, although we will have to continue to
monitor this area for a wintery mix of precipitation as the front
moves through. Snow expected over the Northern Interior late
Tuesday night into Wednesday. As of right now, expected snow
potential in the 3 to 5 inch range for the Western Interior and
Northern Interior.

West Coast and Western Interior: Another round of strong winds
and precipitation is expected for the west coast Tuesday into
Wednesday. A strong front rotating around a 956 mb low located
near St Paul Island Tuesday morning will begin to impact the
Lower YK Delta and Western Alaska Tuesday morning and continue
into Wednesday. Strong winds and heavy mixed precipitation is
likely to accompany the low and frontal boundary as it moves north
along the coast Tuesday night and Wednesday. Winter storm watches
have been issued for zones 212, 214, 215 and 216. The potential
for heavy snow and blowing snow with some freezing rain mixed in
at times as warm air is advected aloft across the west coast on
Tuesday. Very strong winds will also accompany the precipitation.
A high wind watch has also been issued for Saint Lawrence Island
and the Bering Strait Tuesday into Wednesday.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...Sustained north to
northeast winds through the Bering Strait onto St Lawrence Island
will produce above normal water levels beginning Thursday and
will continue into Friday. Will need to monitor for possibility
for freezing spray impacting near shore infrastructure on St
Lawerence Island.
