Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.DISCUSSION...
Snow continuing this morning across the southern Interior.
Additionally, freezing rain has transitioned to snow in the
western Interior. Locally, Fairbanks has received ~4.5 inches of
snow and are expected to receive an additional 2 to 4 inches
through this evening. Over 7 inches of snow fell along the Steese
Highway north of Fairbanks, prompting an upgrade to a Winter
Storm Warning for zone 222. Otherwise, minimal changes to the
forecast as the snow begins to dissipate this evening.

An upper level trough has dipped southwest into Norton Sound,
bringing cooler air to the western Interior. As the trough moves
offshore, high pressure will begin to build over central Alaska.
This high pressure will lead to fair weather conditions for most
of the state going through the weekend, with the best chances for
precipitation along the West Coast and St. Lawrence Island.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Snow continuing along the southern portions of the central and
eastern Interior through this evening. Additional accumulations
of 1 to 3 inches across the area, with greater amounts up to 5
inches south of Fairbanks through this evening. Once snow begins
to dissipate, high pressure will begin to build into the region.
Clear skies expected to persist through the weekend as the high
pressure remains over Alaska. Strong east winds expected to
develop in higher terrain areas today, with blowing snow reducing
visibility through tomorrow afternoon. Drier conditions and clear
skies will allow for a cooling trend in temperatures going into
the weekend.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
Quiet conditions continuing along the North Slope and Brooks
Range. Skies expected to clear with high pressure building off
the Arctic Coast by tomorrow afternoon. East winds expected to
increase, with winds gusting to 40 mph along the northwest Arctic
Coast. Temperatures trending down going into the weekend, but
still remaining above average.

West Coast and Western Interior...
Freezing rain in areas from McGrath and west have transitioned to
snow since midnight. Snow is expected to continue into the
morning hours, then transition back to freezing rain as warmer air
aloft moves into the southern portions of the western Interior
and West Coast through this evening. Low pressure moving offshore
will bring warmer temperatures along the West Coast and a chance
for freezing rain going into the weekend. St Lawrence Island will
receive mixed precipitation tonight and then rain going into
Friday. Temperatures increasing slightly going into the weekend
for the West Coast, while temperatures decreasing for the western
Interior.
