Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.DISCUSSION...
A very active weather pattern continues for the West Coast,
Western Interior and the Western and Central Brooks Range through
the end of the work week as a series of fronts bring periods
strong winds, snow, blowing snow and at times, freezing rain.

The models initialized well and are in generally good agreement
with the overall synoptic scale pattern out through the end of the
week however large differences creep into the model suite by the
weekend.

Aloft at 500 hpa, a large latitude trough, ridge, trough pattern
continues with a deep upper level trough extending from the semi-
tropics north through the Bering Sea to near the pole, and an
upper level ridge extending from the semi-tropics north over the
Yukon and over Banks Island are combining to push a series of warm
and very moist airmass's north into the West Coast, Western
Interior, and the Western and Central Brooks Range. A series of
strong shortwaves are progged to ride north and east along the
back of the upper level ridge through the weekend. This pattern
will continue to pound the West Coast, Western Interior and the
Western and Central Brooks Range with heavy precipitation while
the Central and Eastern interior are expecting limited
precipitation and above normal temperatures through the week.

West Coast, Western Interior and Western Brooks Range: The messy
weather pattern is expected to persist through the week with much
of the area under Winter Storm Warnings. The first in a series of
fronts is currently on pushing north through the Western Brooks
Range and will continue to push north along the western North
Slope today. The next system is already moving on shore into the
Lower YK Delta with the next front that will bring heavy
precipitation to the west coast on today and Thursday as the front
stalls over the West Coast and Western Interior. There is a good
push of moisture with this system s well as a push of very warm
air. As a result, the precipitation type will switch from snow to
rain or freezing rain at times as far north as Kotzebue. The
rain/freezing rain will cut down on snow totals, especially in the
Lower YK Delta with up to two tenths of an inch of ice
accumulation expected south of Nome. Unalakleet north to around
Kotzebue, up to one tenth of an inch of ice accumulation is
expected. A glaze or less is expected north of Kotzebue. The
rain, freezing rain, and snow line will likely move north and
south with each wave of precipitation, but ultimately drift to the
north through the week. This introduces some uncertainty into the
going snowfall forecast. The areas that will see the best
snowfall with this system will be in zones 208 and 217. These
areas won't see the freezing rain that is expected further to the
south. This, when combined with upslope flow will lead to heavy
snowfall totals. Strong winds are also expected with this system;
however, the relatively warm temperatures will limit the potential
for blowing snow especially over the southern zones. The front
and the associated precipitation will finally start to push off to
the east late Thursday night.

North Slope: The front that is currently bring snowfall to the
Western Brooks Range will continue to move north over the Western
North Slope today bringing a chance of snow and increasing the
winds and will help to scour out the Dense Fog seen overnight
over the eastern North Slope. A second front approaches the Brooks
Range this evening and will produce strong southerly gap winds
through and near the Brooks Range Passes beginning tonight and
continuing into Friday. On Thursday these gap winds will increase
with gusts up to 45 mph possible. This will cause blowing snow
and greatly reduce visibility and has prompted Winter Weather
Advisories for blowing snow in zones 205 and 206. The latest
model runs have backed off on wind gusts, however will need to
closely monitor should stronger than predicted winds manifest.
Winds will increase along the Arctic Coast Thursday night as a
surface low moves north through the Chukchi Sea. Blizzard
conditions are possible from Utqiagvik west Thursday night into
Friday as the winds pick up. Continue to monitor.

Central and Eastern Interior: Much of the Central and Eastern
Interior continue to be under the influence of an upper level

Tanana, where a weather system moving over the top of the ridge
will bring snowfall on Thursday. A front will move east across the
Interior on Friday bringing snowfall and a slight chance of light
freezing rain as the snowfall begins.
