Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Fairbanks AK 503 AM AKST Mon Dec 30 2019 .SYNOPSIS... Pressure gradient over the western part of the state remains strong through Tuesday, and winds are producing cold Wind Chills over much of the West coast. Another wave of moisture will move north into the Western Interior with snow spreading over the Western Interior Today through Wednesday morning. && .DISCUSSION...Aloft, at the 500 mb level, a 460 dm low centered over Beaufort Sea has a trough axis that extends through the North Slope. A weak 490 low will develop over Northwest Alaska on Monday. A 492 closed upper level low over the Yukon Delta will move north and weaken rapidly while southerly flow persisting over the Interior into Tuesday. The southerly flow will bring in increasingly warmer 850mb temperatures to much of the Interior with temperatures ranging from near 0c to -10C around the Interior while -15 to -30C air will remain over the Brooks Range. Surface...A broad area of low pressure is SE of the Bering Strait, while high pressure associated with a 1040 mb high in Siberia continues to push E over the Chukchi Sea, Bering Strait, and Northeast Bering Sea through the week. A tight pressure gradient across the area will persist. Central and Eastern Interior: Another wave of moisture will move north into the area with snow spreading west to the Western Interior and north to the Brooks Range Sunday evening and Monday. Looking for snowfall amounts around 4 to 7 inches from Galena to Bettles to Arctic Village. Lighter amounts from Tanana to Fairbanks. Winter weather advisories still in effect for most of Western Alaska through Tuesday evening. The Tanana Valley Jet has ramped up and looking areas of blowing snow with strong east winds to 45 mph near Delta Junction through Monday afternoon. Look for moderating Temperatures across the Interior through mid week then turning colder again by the end of the week. West Coast and Western Interior: Northerly flow will continue through Tuesday across the area, and that combined with only partly cloudy skies will keep temperatures below average. On St Lawrence Island, lake effect like snowfall will continue as cold air moves over the remaining open water in the area. This will bring about 1 to 2 inches of snow per day to St Lawrence Island through the middle of the week. Winds will be strong all along the west coast with gusts to over 55 mph on the north side of St Lawrence Island as well as through Diomede and portions of the northern and western coastlines on the Seward Peninsula. These gusts will persist into the middle of the week. Also expecting 6 to 12 inches of snow near Mcgrath Monday evening into Tuesday. North Slope and Brooks Range: Cold temperatures will persist across the area through Wednesday, with slightly colder air moving in behind that. Snowfall amounts of around an inch are expected each day through Tuesday east of Utqiagvik, with a stronger system bringing 2 to 4 inches of snow from Nuiqsut east on Wednesday.
