* WHAT...Blizzard conditions expected. Travel will be very 
  difficult to impossible.

* WHERE...Eastern Beaufort Sea Coast.

* WHEN...9 PM today to 6 PM Sunday.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Winds gusting as high as 45 mph will 
  cause whiteout conditions in blowing snow. Significant 
  drifting of the snow is likely.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A Blizzard Warning means severe winter weather conditions are
expected or occurring. Falling and blowing snow with strong winds
and poor visibilities are likely. This will lead to whiteout

WEDNESDAY MORNING...

* WHAT...Heavy snow and blowing snow possible. Plan on difficult
  travel conditions. Total snow accumulations 2 to 4 inches, are 
  possible.

* WHERE...Western Arctic Coast.

* WHEN...From late Monday night through Wednesday morning.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Winds gusting as high as 65 mph will cause
  areas of blowing and drifting snow.

Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
An upper level trough over the Bering Strait region will slowly
translate over mainland Alaska through the weekend. The surface
front across the interior will continue to drift east into the
Yukon Territories tonight and into the weekend. As we move into
next week the pattern changes with strong westerly flow moving
into the west coast as another upper level trough organizes in the
Russian Far East to bring a significant storm to the Bering Sea
region as we close into mid week.

.DISCUSSION...
Latest guidance from initialization through the 144 hour forecast
is in unusually good agreement. Ensemble spread is very small for
a better than fair confidence in the forecast for the short term
moving into the mid term of the forecast. In the short term a
blend of models concept will be used. WPC medium range forecast
highlighting a significant storm across western and northern
Alaska for next week seems very reasonable solution to be
followed.

North Slope...
Main impacts for the short term of the forecast this weekend will
be mainly aviation issues with lower ceilings and visibilities.
Hazards should be mainly marine with small craft advisories and
freezing spray. The long term towards the mid-end of next week the
models suggest a possible storm for the North Slope.

Western Interior...

The pattern will have weakening low pressure over the region
through the weekend. Improving weather as the weekend moves along
for the western interior. Then next week starting late Monday and
lasting into mid week another storm system moves into the region
and may bring some significant snow for the area.

West Coast/Bering Strait region...

Strong northerly flow will continue with open water creating some
strong snow squalls over the open ocean waters. The islands of the
Bering Sea will continue on the north shores could continue to see
impacts from the high surf and freezing spray. A break on Sunday
as the area sets up for the next significant storm starts to move
into the region on Monday, expect more impacts for the region.

Eastern Interior...

Snow showers are expected off and on through the weekend as the
chinook weakens and temperatures cool from much above normal to
just plain above normal temperatures. The 18Z special sounding
this morning at Fairbanks showed a double inversion, the lower
standard inversion for the Tanana Valley, and the second inversion
from the strong chinook. The chinook is weakening this afternoon
and cooler air will continue to spill into the area. This is
reducing the risk for freezing rain. 20Z NUCAPS POES soundings
show a continued cooling from the 18Z and 12Z soundings at
Fairbanks. Sunday through Tuesday mid day looks like a break in
the action for the interior, then later on Tuesday through
Thanksgiving looks to be a snowy period with a continued cooling
trend to almost near normal temperatures by the end of the
forecast period.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...
Northerly gales, high surf, and freezing spray will continue for
zone 213 from the Bering Strait to St Lawrence Island through
Sat, with winds and surf decreasing Sat PM and ending Sun.

A strong storm is forecast to move northeast across the Northern
Bering Sea Mon and Tue, and across the Chukchi Sea on Wed and Thu.
This could bring southwesterly gales and possible coastal
flooding to the West Coast Mon night-Wed. This could bring
blizzard conditions to the West Coast from Mon through Tue night.
This could also bring blizzard condition and possible coastal
flooding to the Western Arctic Coast Wed and Thu. This storm needs
to be watched closely.
