Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.DISCUSSION...
The active weather pattern will continue over northern Alaska
through Wednesday with a one two punch of wintery weather.
Ongoing snow event over the Western Interior and West Coast will
wind down Monday evening just as a significant winter storm takes
aim at the Central and Eastern interior with heavy wet snow
expected Monday evening through Wednesday morning.

Central and Eastern Interior: An area of low pressure currently
just west of Anchorage will continue to move north and west
of the Alaska Range into the western Interior this tonight and
into Norton Sound Monday morning. As the low moves north of the
range, we expect east to northeasterly winds to kick up across the
Interior, but especially over the summits and higher terrain
north and west of Livengood. Wind gusts as high as 40 mph are
expected over summits along the Steese, Elliott and Dalton
Highways. Winds will die down during the day on Monday. The
ongoing Wind Advisories for zones 219, 220 and 221 look to be in
good shape and have added zone 218 for strong winds pushing
through the Brooks Range Passes.

On Monday, a 978 mb low moving north out of the Northern Pacific
will continue to move north into the southwest Yukon Territory.
Precipitation will spread from southeast to northwest across much
of the central and eastern Interior Monday afternoon for the Forty
Mile Country and late Monday afternoon and early evening for the
Fairbanks area. In many locations the precipitation will start off
as rain or a rain snow mix; however, the rain will transition
over to snow by by early Monday evening. The snow will continue
all day Tuesday into Tuesday night along a trough that will remain
relatively stationary along a line from just north of Eagle to
Tanana to Galena. The big questions is when will the snow taper
off. The 12 model suite as well as ensemble members have had good
run to run consistency as well as agreement between models on the
timing and amount of precipitation. Some differences remain on the
timing of the transition from a rain snow mix to all snow with a
the latest models leaning toward both an earlier precipitation
start and and earlier transition to snow. Most models have between
0.45 and 0.65 inches of precipitation. In the higher elevations
especially in the Forty Mile Country where the precipitation is
expected to be all snow 8 to 14 inches of snow are expected with
the heaviest snow accumulations along the Taylor Highway while
only 1 to 3 inches of snow are expected along the Alaska Highway.
Gusty winds are expected to reduce visibility especially to the
west of Tok. The Winer Storm Watch for zone 224 was upgraded to a
Winter Storm Warning.

In the Central Interior generally 4 to 6 inches of heavy wet snow
are expected in valley locations beginning Monday evening and
continuing through Wednesday morning including Fairbanks. In the
hills and higher terrain north of Fairbanks 6 to 10 inches of wet
heavy snow are expected beginning Monday evening and continuing
through Wednesday morning. The Winter Storm Watch for zone 222 was
upgraded to a Winter Storm Warning.

The Winter Storm Watch for zone 220 for higher terrain south of
Beaver as well for the Dalton and Steese Highway Summits was
upgraded to a Winter Storm Warning as the heavy wet snow will
likely have significant travel impacts. The Winter Storm Watch for
zone and 221 for Tanana, Manley Hot Springs and the Elliot Highway
was also upgraded to a Winter Storm Warning with 4 to 10 inches of
heavy wet snow expected. A Winter Weather Advisory was issued for
zone 226 where several inches of snow combined with wind gusts to
45 mph along the Richardson Highway is expected to reduce
visibility on one half mile or less and produce difficult travel
conditions. The Winter Weather Advisory for zone 216 currently
out for the heavy snow in the Nulato Hills and southern portions
of the zone was extended to cover the strong winds developing in
the northern portion of the zone this evening and tonight as the
low near Anchorage moves into the western Interior tonight and to
cover the heavy snow that is expected to develop over the northern
portion of the zone form Galena north tomorrow evening as the
storm moving along the Canadian Border pushes moisture back into
the area.

A strong gradient between the 988 mb low moving into the interior
and the 1032 mb high pressure system north of Alaska will produce
strong winds tomorrow afternoon over all but the interior portions
of the North Slope. Recent snowfall on the North Slope combined
with the strong winds expected do develop over the North Slope as
prompted Winter Weather Advisories for blowing snow beginning
tomorrow afternoon and continuing through Tuesday evening.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

.FIRE WEATHER...
Relative humidity levels currently in the 20 percent to 30
percent range in the Middle and Upper Tanana Valleys as well as
the northern foothills of the Alaska Range will see dramatic
increases Monday and Monday night as a low producing significant
rain and snow over the Central and Eastern Interior pushes north
along the Canadian Border through Wednesday. Gusty winds this
evening along the Eastern Alaska Range foothills are not expected
to reach Red Flag Criteria this evening or on Monday. Winds are
expected to be stronger on Tuesday as the low pushes to the north
however relative humidity levels are expected to remain above 40
percent.

Significant precipitations is expected across much of the
Interior late Monday into Wednesday morning. This will help to
keep the minimum RH values above 40% for most of the area Monday
into Wednesday.

.HYDROLOGY...
Cooler than normal temperatures over the Eastern Interior will
continue through the middle of the week and will slow the breakup
process; however, extreme caution should be used crossing any of
the Interior rivers as the ice continues to rot and be eroded from
below, and any runoff will be moving into the mainstem rivers.
Caution should also be used on lakes as the ice melts at different
rates.
