.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...
A large vertically stacked low is drifting northward across the
western Bering Sea, with an occluded front tracking eastward
across the central to eastern Bering Sea. There is a solid band
of southerly gale force winds and steady rain ahead of the front,
from around Atka northward to the Pribilof Islands. Showers
dominate the western Bering Sea in the vicinity of the low center.
Downstream, a ridge dominates the southern mainland, with mostly
clear skies across interior Southwest Alaska and all of
Southcentral. Fog formed overnight in the southern Susitna Valley
and along Knik Arm, with one tendril drifting southward into
north to west Anchorage. However, the fog is dissipating with
increasing sunlight and warming surface temperatures. Weak cold
air advection east of the ridge axis and tight pressure gradients
behind the storm system which moved through yesterday are leading
to strong gusty winds across some of the Gulf of Alaska coastal
waters as well as Seward, Whittier, and Valdez areas. However,
These winds are trending down as the upper ridge builds overhead.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...
Models are in excellent agreement with large scale features over
the next few days and forecast confidence is high.

&&

.AVIATION...
PANC...VFR conditions and light winds will persist for most of the
taf period. However, it appears favorable for fog to form in Knik
Arm again tonight. With a very light northerly wind, this fog will
drift southward toward the terminal. There is a chance it could
cover a larger area than this morning and lower ceilings/vis to
IFR over a longer period of time. If so, would expect fog to burn
off by 21Z.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...

Sunny skies prevail over Southcentral Alaska, as an upper ridge
continues to build to the west. Another cold, mostly clear night
is likely over most of the area. Expect overnight lows to trend
several degrees colder than than this morning over the Copper
River Basin given the diminished cloud cover, while farther west
conditions should be similar to last night. Surface winds are a
bit more favorable for fog in the Anchorage Bowl tonight, so fog
Friday morning will likely be at least as widespread as it was
this morning.

Clear skies will continue Friday as the ridge moves overhead. A
surface low will develop several hundred miles south of the AKPEN
early Saturday, and an upper trough over the Bering Sea will steer
it northward into Southwest. The associated warm front tracks
northward through the Gulf late Saturday. Winds along Turnagain
Arm will ramp up Saturday night and precipitation will become
widespread by Sunday.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 through 3)...

A ridge of high pressure over Southwest has brought fair skies and
light winds to most of the area today. Meanwhile a large low
centered just west of the Bering will bring a front inland
tonight, spreading in clouds and rain. Gusty southerly winds will
arrive along the Kuskokwim Delta coast this evening and last
through Friday. A second system arrives over Southwest for
Saturday, bringing a surge of moisture to Southwest for the
weekend. As the associated upper level low becomes more amplified
with time and the adjacent ridge to the east strengthens, gusty
south to southeasterly winds will also arrive Saturday across the
greater Bristol Bay area. This amplification will also steer the
remnants of a moisture-laden low currently centered near 40N which
will likely bring moderate to heavy rainfall through the weekend.

&&

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 through 3)...

A broad area of low pressure over the Bering will continue to
usher a gale force front eastward this evening. Broad southerly
flow and showers are expected to persist across the Bering through
Friday. By Saturday, the upper level trough amplifies and steers
a North Pacific low over the eastern Aleutians. This will result
in strong gusty winds (especially through the usual gaps and
passes) and heavy rainfall through the weekend.

&&.MARINE (Days 3 through 5: Sunday through Tuesday)...

Near gale force wind in advance of a frontal boundary is possible
south of Kodiak Sunday. These strong winds will move east across
the Gulf of Alaska to the North Gulf Coast region by the afternoon.
Monday a strong low in the northern Gulf of Alaska will have
strong wrap around northwest flow across the Alaska Peninsula that
will likely produce gale force wind south of the Alaska Peninsula
and possibly in Bristol Bay. The storm in the Gulf is expected to
intensify through Tuesday and storm force north to northwest
winds are possible south of the eastern Alaska Peninsula across
the Kodiak Island waters with gale force winds very likely over
the Gulf of Alaska waters.

A front is expected to move into the western Bering Sea Monday
that may produce gale force wind in advance of it. As the front
progresses east it will weaken as will the wind in advance of it.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 3 through 7: Sunday through Thursday)...

The models remain in good synoptic agreement through Tuesday.
Larger synoptic scale differences arise Wednesday with respect to
a weak low in the Bering Sea and another low approaching the
central Aleutians. The models agree with a moderately strong low
in the Gulf of Alaska Wednesday, although the position of the low
center does vary between the models. Moving into Thursday the
model solutions diverge significantly with the strength and
location of a low impacting the eastern bering Sea and Alaska
Peninsula, thus confidence in the forecast for day 7 is low for
this region.

A front from a low near Kodiak Island with a long southerly
fetch into Kodiak Island and the north Gulf Coast will bring
ample rainfall to Kodiak Island and Prince William Sound Sunday,
then move off to the east. A large deep upper level trough over
the Bering Sea will bring broad southwest flow to the mainland,
essentially keeping the mainland in cloudy or wet conditions.
This trough will bring cooler air into the mainland, though not
cool enough to support snow. A new low forming along the frontal
boundary near the Barren Islands, intensifies in the Gulf of
Alaska Tuesday, then moves off to the east late Wednesday as a
broad flat ridge of high pressure moves into the Gulf.

Ridging builds into the eastern Bering Sea late Monday with the
low in the Gulf of Alaska, resulting in drier northerly flow
across the southwest mainland along with colder air moving in.
This will also result in strong north to northwest wind across the
Alaska Peninsula into the western Gulf of Alaska. The Bering Sea
will be relatively benign for this time of year with a front
moving into the western Bering Sea Monday with possible gale
force wind. This front weakens as it elongates to the east and the
wind associated with it will drop off. The parent low to this
front moves to the northern Bering Sea Tuesday, leaving a broad
zonal westerly flow across the Bering See through Wednesday.
Thursday model solutions diverge significantly, with a low
possible in the northwest Bering Sea with a trough across the
Bering Sea to the Alaska Peninsula, or a strong low over the
eastern Aleutians with a weak trough to the northwest Bering Sea.
Suffice it to say, confidence in the forecast for thursday is very
low at this time.
