Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

The upper level ridge still remains in place, negatively tilted
and situated over western Alaska and the Bering Sea. Meanwhile, a
well-stacked low pressure system lies over the Western Aleutians,
with another upper level low far to the north over western
Canada. The upper level ridge is getting squeezed between these
two lows and is finally beginning to weaken. Several shortwaves
are moving around the Canadian low, and progressing southward
through the mainland of Alaska. Combined with the residual thermal
trough at the surface, this is creating an area of instability
that extends from the Kuskokwim Delta, across the Alaska Range,
and into the Copper River Delta.

Where skies are clear, surface heating is allowing pockets of air
to rise enough to take advantage of the upper level instability,
and so thunderstorms continue to form in the northern Kuskowim
Delta, the upper Kuskokwim River Valley, and the Copper River
Basin. Areas of terrain are providing the best lift, but with the
instability aloft, these thunderstorms are long duration, often
lasting overnight, which is unusual for Southcentral.

Meanwhile, in Southcentral, southwesterly up-Inlet flow has
entrenched the marine layer into the valleys, and cool moist air
has permeated the region. While challenging for aviation, this has
provided a good respite from the heat and dry weather of recent
weeks.

&&

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

For the overall pattern, the models are currently in good
agreement. However, none of the models are currently handling the
marine stratus in the Southcentral area very well. All the models
wanted to break it out across the region by noon, but satellite
continues to show it firmly entrenched. Otherwise, model
performance seems to be doing fairly well.

&&

.AVIATION...

PANC...Marine layer is continuing to be a bit of a challenge
today. Current thinking is that increasing winds from the
southwest will lend enough instability to raise the ceiling from
IFR to MVFR through the evening. Southwest winds should continue
through tomorrow, which will keep the marine layer in, but
above IFR through the end of the TAF period.

&&

.FIRE WEATHER...

Thunderstorms should continue again today over both the southwest
interior and Copper River Basin. Tomorrow, southwest flow will
begin to increase stability across the southwest, which will reduce
the thunderstorm coverage to further north and along the Alaska
Range. By Saturday, the thermal trough will have moved far enough
north that thunderstorms should no longer be a concern.

In the Mat-Su and Kenai, the marine layer should continue to
provide some respite. Southwest flow is expected to continue
through Saturday morning, which will keep the more moist air in
the region.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...

Not much change is noted for the next two days across southcentral.
Above the marine layer the atmosphere remains unstable. Afternoon
and evening showers and thunderstorms are expected to reform or
continue across most mountain ranges today. The main focus for
many of the showers and thunderstorms will again be across the
Copper River Basin. As winds in all levels of the atmosphere have
increased, so too will the motion of any rain or thunderstorms,
meaning they will be less of your pulse storms. Farther west and
along the Talkeetna mountains and Alaska Range, chances for
thunder will be primarily focused over the mountains overnight,
though boundaries kicked out from these storms could be enough
forcing to allow initiation inland across the Su-Valley.
Tomorrow, the thermal trough further weaken, leaving most chances
for thunder to be confined to mountains. The marine stratus that
brought fog and drizzle to most coastal and inlet locations, will
have a hard time mixing out with light winds. If we pick up
stronger winds across Cook Inlet this afternoon, the marine layer
may give way to clearing skies this evening, allowing temps to
bump ever so slightly. Unfortunately, the afternoon sounding
showed that this layer is rather deep and it will take some time
to scour the moisture out. Tomorrow should see a similar marine
layer impacting the Cook Inlet region again, if it manages to
clear overnight. Temperatures across the region will hold their
cooler course as the thermal trough slides north. Areas in the
marine layer will struggle to rise above the low 60s, while clear
areas will be in comfortable lower 70s. Smoke from the Swan Lake
Fire will continue to linger into the weekend across the region,
with areas near Sterling and Cooper Landing having to deal with
the worst of it. Other locations may still see and smell some
smoke, but visibilities should remain good.

&&

Fire Weather for Southcentral:

Instability remains high across the Copper River Basin as well as
along the Talkeetna and Chugach mountains. Weak shortwaves will
continue to track from the NW to SE, north of the Old Denali
Highway and help to kick off more evening convection with
heightened lightning activity. Tomorrow, thunderstorm activity
will decrease as the thermal trough lifts north and weak ridging
moves overhead.

Swan Lake Fire. Isolated thunderstorm over the Kenai Mountains
can't be ruled out later this evening and overnight. Steering flow
remains weak through this evening though will begin to increase
out of the southwest overnight and into tomorrow. Any storms that
form are expected to remain over the mountains.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...

The main concern for tonight's forecast is the thunderstorm
development over the Kuskokwim Valley and and Alaska Range through
the evening hours. Thunderstorms that have already developed have
produced high amounts of lightning, but overall activity has
remained less than yesterday. The main difference between
yesterday and today is the northerly storm motion direction,
resulting in less thunderstorm activity across the Kuskokwim
Valley and Bristol Bay areas.

The upper level trough over the western Aleutians will continue
to weaken the ridge that was over mainland Alaska. The associated
surface low will continue to move slowly towards southwest Alaska
for Saturday. The leading shortwave will track to the Kuskokwim
Delta bringing showers for tonight. Heading into Friday and
Saturday, this upper trough and embedded shortwaves will bring
more cloud cover, precipitation, and cooler temperatures across
all of Southwest Alaska. This will also cause convective activity
to decrease over the next few days.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 and 2)...

A low tracking south of the Aleutian Chain will bring Small Craft
Advisory winds and rain to the coastal waters of the central and
eastern Aleutians. Winds will weaken Friday afternoon as the low
starts to move south of the forecast area. However, some gap winds
will still be present along the AKPEN. The Bering will see
relatively calm conditions through Saturday.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5; Sunday through Tuesday)...

There is above average confidence that a low positioned near
Bristol Bay Sunday will bring continued west to northwest winds
across much of the Bering through Tuesday. For the Gulf, a front
extending across the western Gulf will bring an increase in
southeasterly winds over the northern Gulf and along the coast
through Tuesday. Winds and waves are expected to remain below
small-craft levels.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 3 through 7; Sunday through Thursday)...

Models are in good agreement through midweek with the evolution
of an elongated upper-level low with embedded troughs stretching
across the Aleutian Chain Sunday then sliding into the western
Gulf by Tuesday and towards the southern AK Panhandle by Thursday.
This solution would continue the pattern shift to a cooler and
wetter one for the southern mainland, especially along the coast
as this feature splits and displaces the ridge previously anchored
over the state. With a weaker ridge to the north of this low,
precipitation across the interior is expected to be more spotty
and showery in nature. By midweek, precipitation across the
interior may become more widespread as a shortwave ejecting from a
second upper-level low positioned over the Beaufort Sea drops
south.
