Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...
A strong 980s low near over the Barren Island this afternoon is
moving northwest. The weather front associated with this low is
moving west across Southwest Alaska and north across
Southcentral. Windy conditions were observed from Bristol Bay/AK
Pen to across Southcentral and the Gulf. The strongest gap flows
exceeded 50-70 mph along Turnagain Arm and Portage Valley. Strong
southeast winds around 50 mph were observed out of the Knik River
Valley. Rain was evident along the leading edge of front and
upslope areas across Southcentral as it swept north and west
across the Mainland. Showers persisted on the backside of the
front. Upslope flow over the southern Kenai Peninsula produced a
steady band of moderate rain from Seward north to Moose Pass.
Showers were evident elsewhere across the Bering Sea and
Aleutians.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...
Models are in relatively good agreement. The only significant
differences are with the front moving into the western Gulf
Sunday night. Generally trended closer to the GFS. The NAM
appearers to be a little too fast.

&&

.AVIATION...
PANC...VFR. Strong southeast winds across the airport complex will
peak late this evening then diminish, but remain gusty, through
Saturday afternoon.

&&

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...

A mature low pressure system spans from Kodiak to Cordova. Both
the Kenai and Middleton Island radars have been active today as
the occluded front and the warm front of this system have moved
into the region. A few lightning strikes were detected this
afternoon south of Cantwell. The surface low is currently between
Kodiak and Homer and the models project that the low will continue
to move north. There is a tight pressure gradient associated with
this system and as the low moves north this evening gusty winds
will continue. The strongest winds are still expected along the
Turnagain Arm and the Hillside area of Anchorage. The second
impact from this low will be moderate to heavy rains over Seward
and the Prince William Sound. Most of the rain will fall along and
near the coast, but it is possible that light showers could make
it into the Anchorage Metro Area. The winds will begin to diminish
on Saturday but will remain breezy as the parent low weakens. By
Sunday, there will be a new low southwest of Kodiak which will
place a batch of unsettled weather over Kodiak and the Barren
Islands but the majority of Southcentral Alaska can expect mild
weather for Mother's Day.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 through 3)...

Scattered showers will continue for much of Southwest Alaska
overnight tonight into early Saturday as a weak surface front
pulls away from the coast while its parent surface low tracks
northwest across the region. The moist, unstable airmass, combined
with some increased insolation has also produced a few isolated
thunderstorms from the Kilbuck Mountains north to the Middle
Kuskokwim Valley this afternoon and will continue to do so through
the evening hours. The shower activity will become less numerous
Saturday through early Sunday as the surface low tracks into the
eastern Bering. Gusty southerly winds increase late Saturday
through Sunday as the next shortwave lifts toward the AK-Pen
tightening the pressure gradient between a developing surface low
and a ridge over the Gulf. Showers redevelop late Sunday into
Monday as the surface low tracks over the AK-Pen and along the
west coast.

&&

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 through 3)...

A broad trough remains entrenched across the Bering with one
surface low situated over the southern Bering and a second
moving across Southwest Alaska. The first low will continue to
track east tonight, moving over the eastern Aleutians tomorrow.
The second will track toward the coast then redevelop south of
Nunivak Island on Saturday. This system will absorb the first as
it swings a front over the Pribilofs and tracks south toward the
eastern Aleutians by Sunday morning. As this surface low drops
south, a developing low downstream over the north Pacific will
lift north pushing a front toward the AK-Pen. This low then
broadens into a more diffuse trough as the main upper-level trough
axis slides east. Farther west, a ridge building off Kamchatka
slides east keeping things rather quiet for the western Bering and
Aleutians.

&&

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5)...

Beginning the marine extended period on Monday, there will be weak
low pressure over the Bering Sea which will remain in place
through mid week. The Pacific storm track will remain well south
of the region which gives high confidence that winds and seas will
remain below gale force with no storms expected during this
period.

For the Gulf of Alaska waters, high pressure will start the period
on Monday with a weak southeast wind direction. The pattern will
favor lows moving into the Gulf of Alaska from the southeast, but
with the storm track well to the south, there is high confidence
that quiescent weather will dominate the Gulf after this recent
storm cycle.

&&

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 3 through 7)...

Beginning the extended period forecast Monday, there will be a
closed "anchor" low over the eastern Bering Sea with weather
shortwave troughs rotating north around that low into the Gulf of
Alaska. Weak upper ridging will be in place across the Yukon. This
pattern will favor warming temperatures across Southcentral (not
hot), but warming to average values. This will represent a more
normal spring pattern with southeast gap winds in the afternoon.
Chances of precipitation will initially favor the Western Alaska
Range into Southwest Alaska Monday and Tuesday. Thereafter, upper
ridging will try and build in, but an easterly shortwave trough
embedded within the flow will likely keep some clouds and
precipitation chances across all of Southern Alaska midweek
through the late week, with cooler and cloudier conditions
favoring the North Gulf Coast. Overall, this pattern will be much
more "spring- like" as the Pacific storm track shifts south.
