.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...
A weak area of low pressure south of Cordova is producing
convective rain showers across Prince William Sound. Most of the
precipitation is missing or being blocked from reaching Valdez.
However, some of that moisture is getting up into the Copper River
Basin, where snow has been falling much of the day in Glennallen.
Further west towards Anchorage, an upper level trough moving
eastward across the Alaska Range along with cold air moving
southward is providing the lift needed for continuing light snow
across Anchorage. Snowfall amounts have varied from 1 to 2 inches
on the west side, 6 inches on the Hillside and East Anchorage, and
as much as 8 inches in Eagle River since midnight last night.
The core of the coldest air is settling into Southwest Alaska,
while a front with a series of embedded lows is nearly stationary
along the Aleutians. The winds have diminished quite a bit over
Southwest Alaska from previous days, but this will be short-lived.
A Wind Chill Advisory is in effect for Bristol Bay from King
Salmon north and the Kuskokwim Delta. More on that in the
discussion below. The nearly stationary front over the Aleutians
marks the boundary of very cold air spilling out of the Arctic and
Siberia through the Bering Strait. With this pattern expected to
continue, steady north to northeast winds persist over much of the
Bering,producing widespread snow shower activity. Along the front
a rain/snow mix along with gale force winds is ongoing from Shemya
eastward through Adak and Atka.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...
Model agreement continues to be abysmal, considering the potential
impacts of a strong low moving into the Gulf on Friday. The models
all agree that a low will form over the North Pacific and move
into the Gulf, eventually reaching Prince William Sound, but the
track it takes to get there is different enough between the models
that there is major uncertainty on the impacts. The GFS is the
westernmost, and slowest model. Thus, it would be the most
impactful solution if its forecast were to verify. This would
include heavy snow and strong winds all along the Gulf Coast, from
Kodiak through Seward and up into Thompson Pass. There would be
another round of snow and blowing snow along the western Kenai
Peninsula as well. The other models are much closer to each other
and considerably farther east. This would dramatically limit the
impacts to Kodiak and Seward, though both should still see some
wind and snow, and any heavy snow and strong winds would remain
over the Gulf. Forecast confidence is well below normal.

.AVIATION...
PANC...Very light snow and MVFR conditions will continue
gradually ending from west to east over the next few hours,
followed by clearing skies and VFR conditions. Winds will remain
elevated out of the north, including isolated gusts to 20 kt
through the overnight hours and into Friday morning. The next
round of snow will move in on Friday night, likely beginning after
the 06Z ending of the current TAF. There is considerable
uncertainty on snowfall amounts and timing, but potential for
another round of IFR conditions exists from Friday night through
Saturday.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...
An arctic trough is tracking east with snow ending across the
western half of Southcentral. Light snow will linger in the Copper
Basin through much of Friday before finally ending. Elsewhere,
expect some of the colder temps of this winter as short lasting
arctic high pressure builds in by Friday morning, allowing for
widespread below zero temps.
Attention quickly turns to yet another strong low moving into the
Gulf. There is huge uncertainty with this low even though it will
be moving into the North Gulf by tomorrow afternoon. What is know
is this low will reach storm force over the Gulf waters, and it
will bring widespread snow to Southcentral, including Kodiak
Island. What is not known is the exact track, which largely
influences how much snow falls on the backside of the low, mainly
from Kodiak northward to the western Kenai anc Anchorage. What is
more certain is heavier snow will impact the eastern Kenai, Copper
Basin, and Valdez, and with the strong offshore pressure gradient,
northerly winds will likely support blizzard conditions in
Thompson Pass Fri night and Sat morning. Less certain is how much
snow and how strong of winds occur in Kodiak, as some model
solutions (mostly the GFS) take a westward track of the strong
triple point low which would bring in very heavy snow and strong
winds into Kodiak City during the Fri afternoon and overnight
period. For now this forecast is taking a conservative approach
with 4-7" of snow accumulation, but a low track farther east which
would not support a blizzard.
Elsewhere, light snow will spread north from Anchorage to the
Susitna Valley Friday evening into Saturday, bringing more light
snow accumulations. Light snow is also expected across Homer to
the northern Kenai, and the possibility exists for potential
blowing and drifting snow, especially if the westward track
verifies.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...
Clear skies and freezing cold temperatures will continue across
Southwest Alaska throughout the weekend as an Arctic trough dips
farther south. Wind chill advisories have been issued for the
Kuskokwim Delta and Bristol Bay through Saturday afternoon. These
areas will see wind chills of negative 40 tonight and even colder
wind chills to negative 55 for Friday night when winds increase
across the region. Coastal locations and areas along the Alaska
Peninsula will stay slightly warmer. The below zero high
temperatures will continue through Sunday, when temperatures could
see a warm up as cloud coverage begins to move northward over the
Alaska Peninsula and Bristol Bay.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 and 2)...
A strong front this afternoon, which includes a swatch of storm
force winds stretched over the western and central Aleutians,
will weaken slightly through the night as the associated string of
lows progresses eastward. By friday morning, the front will lift
over Dutch Harbor, which could bring a few inches of snowfall to
the area. Strong northeasterly winds and freezing spray will
persist throughout the weekend, with heavy freezing spray limited
to the eastern Bering.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5)...
(Sunday through Tuesday)
...Bering Sea and Aleutian Coastal Waters...
Low pressure south of the AKPEN and a second, stronger low well
south of the central Aleutians will continue to bring sustained
north-northeasterly gales across much of the Bering and westerly
gales south of the Chain through Tuesday. An area of storm-force
winds are also possible south of the eastern half of the Chain and
AKPEN late Monday in to Tuesday depending on the strength and
position of the second low as it advances toward Bristol Bay.
An elevated likelihood for freezing spray, some of it heavy, will
persist into early next week. Seas in the 20 to 25 feet range
will transition from west to east for the forecast period. Winds
and waves are expected to relax by Tuesday across the western half
of the Bering and Aleutians as the storm activity moves toward the
Southwest mainland.
...Gulf of Alaska...
Sustained gales, and perhaps a small area of storms, will persist
along the Southcentral coast Sunday as an area of low pressure
tracks northeast from near Kodiak to Prince William Sound. These
winds subside somewhat for Monday as the low and its front weaken.
A large area of westerly small-craft advisory winds with embedded
storm-force winds will redevelop late Monday and continue into
Tuesday as a second low pressure system lifts toward the AKPEN
with a front moving across the Gulf. Seas will generally be in
the 10 to 15 feet range near the coast, and 20 to 25 feet further
offshore for most of the forecast period.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 3 through 7)...
(Sunday through Thursday)
...Southcentral...
An active weather pattern will continue across Southcentral
through the end of the year. One storm system weakens on Sunday
with snowfall across the region and gusty winds along the coast
diminishes. The storm system then arrives quickly on the heels of
the previous, affecting the region Sunday night into Monday with
additional accumulating snowfall. Intrusions of rain, however,
are possible along the coast as some warmer air advects northward.
Yet another storm moves into the area for Monday night into
Tuesday. It is with this system that models begin to diverge
greatly on strength and track, and these significant differences
may play havoc on precipitation type and snow amount over a good
portion of Southcentral. Right now, it does appear that it will
remain just cold enough aloft that precipitation will stay all
snow over interior locations, with another round of accumulating
snow likely. However, enough warm air may move over the coast and
Cook Inlet that a changeover to a wintry mix (freezing rain) is
possible. That is what the latest GFS and ECMWF guidance is
indicating with 850mb (4,000ft above MSL) pushing 0C to +1C by
Monday evening. Snow showers then persist into Wednesday as this
system lifts north as cold air moves back in behind the low.
...Southwest Alaska...
An arctic trough diving south across Southwest Alaska will
interact with a storm system moving from near Kodiak Island to
Prince William sound to bring a reinforcing short of extremely
cold air through Sunday. By late Sunday, a low tracking north
toward the AKPEN will push warmer air and moisture over the
region, resulting in accumulating snowfall for the region. Enough
warmer air aloft may make it into the upper Kuskokwim Valley for a
brief changeover to the wintry mix late Monday before this system
lifts north and ushers in another round of arctic air and
continued snow showers into mid-week..
...Saint Matthew Island, Pribilof Islands, and Aleutians...
Periods of snow showers will continue through next week with a
second round of arctic air diving south across the Bering by
Tuesday.
