Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...
A strong 966 mb low is moving slowly from west to east south of
the central Aleutians this afternoon. An associated frontal
system extends north across the eastern Aleutians to near Nunivak
Island, then west through Saint Matthew Island, then south-
southwest back to the low. Significant winds (gale to storm force)
are occurring over much of the Bering, and virtually all of the
Aleutians and Alaska Peninsula. An upper level ridge is building
to the east of this low over Southcentral Alaska with generally
dry conditions.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...
The numerical models are in good agreement. Models have come into
good agreement with the frontal wave developing south of the
Alaska Peninsula Friday night and lifting north into Southwest
Alaska Saturday, as well as with a second front wave lifting north
along the Southwest Alaska coast and developing into a triple
point closed low on Sunday.

.AVIATION...
PANC...VFR conditions and light winds will persist through
Saturday morning. On Saturday afternoon wind shear conditions are
expected as the winds aloft increase ahead of an approaching
front.

&&

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...

Generally uneventful weather will continue tonight. A pattern
change to wetter, windier weather is on tap  Saturday into
Sunday. A strong low over the central Aleutians will steer a warm
front with a moisture fetch reaching south of 30N into
Southcentral. Precipitation will begin Saturday morning on Kodiak
Island, slowly spreading east throughout the day. Heavy
precipitation with concurrent 40 to 50 mph sustained southeast
winds over the mountains south and west of Kodiak City could
cause local mudslides and rapid stream rises. Meanwhile, with
cold air in place and favorable upslope flow, snow is expected
during the day Saturday into Sunday morning in the northern
Susitna Valley, particularly Broad Pass. Thus, a winter weather
advisory is in effect. Given persistent southerly flow, expect a
changeover to rain by midday Sunday.

Winds will generally increase throughout the day Saturday over
most of Southcentral. In particular, a high wind watch has been
issued for Turnagain Arm and the Upper Hillside of Anchorage, for
possible gusts to 75 mph. Winds are expected to peak in those
areas Sunday, though could reach warning criteria as early as
Saturday night. With down-inlet synoptic winds, confidence isn't
great that winds will reach warning criteria along the Hillside,
so it will be important to monitor the forecast. On a related
note, the strong east/southeast flow in the lower levels will take
a bite out of the precipitation in the Anchorage Bowl, in
addition to the Matanuska Valley and western Kenai Peninsula. But,
with such a persistent southerly moisture source, it will be hard
for these areas to be completely shadowed and periods of rain are
likely... it's just a question of timing. Along the eastern Kenai
Peninsula, storm total precipitation will be around 4 to 6 inches
Saturday night into Monday. A flood watch is in effect, focused
on Seward.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...
The Southwest mainland is entering a wet and windy weekend as a
strong front associated with a low near Adak will push into the
area tonight and persist through the weekend. The wind and rain
will increase Saturday as a secondary wave moves along the front
in the North Pacific and strengthen the pressure gradient over the
region Saturday. This front will become nearly stationary over the
Southwest mainland Saturday through Sunday. There is some
uncertainty on Sunday for how strong the winds along the Aleutian
Range in the Bristol Bay and upper Kuskokwim Valley regions will
become due to model differences. Therefore, keep an eye on these
wind forecasts to see if these winds increase or decrease, since
there is an argument for either scenario.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 and 2)...
The large low near Adak, which is the extra-tropical remnants of
former-typhoon Neoguri, is slowly tracking eastward with an area
of heavy rain and strong winds ahead of it; and strong winds in
the cold advection on the western side. The strong winds to the
west and northwest of the low will be slow to diminish as the
pressure gradient remains tight in that region through the
weekend. However the Storm force winds over the western Bering Sea
should diminish to Gale force for Saturday night and Sunday.

East of the low, toward the Unalaska area, the winds and heavy
rain will persist through most of the night and then diminish
early Saturday morning as the front pushes through the area and
into the Southwest mainland after that.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5: Monday through Wednesday)...

Bering Sea/Aleutians: A narrow area of gale force northwesterly
winds on Monday will continue across the central Bering from Adak
northward. As the low weakens, the gales in that area should
diminish by Monday evening. Isolated gales are also possible off
the coast of Cape Newenham in southeasterly winds Monday morning,
which will diminish by the afternoon. No gales are expected Monday
evening through Tuesday night. On Wednesday, a new gale force
North Pacific low will move into the eastern Bering and Aleutians.
Gales will be possible during the day south of Dutch Harbor,
Bristol Bay, and are most likely south and east of the low over
the waters south of the Alaska Peninsula.

Gulf of Alaska: On Monday, a barrier jet will produce gales along
the North Gulf Coast and Prince William Sound through the day. The
winds will rapidly diminish Monday evening. No gales are expected
anywhere in the Gulf through Wednesday morning. Gales will be
possible in the Kodiak Island area waters Wednesday afternoon and
evening.

&&

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 3 through 7: Monday through Friday)...

A large low over the Bering will be drawing copious Pacific moisture
into Southern Alaska to start off the long-term on Monday. An
atmospheric river aimed at Southcentral will be producing heavy
rain from Seward eastward through Cordova Monday morning. This
feature is expected to accelerate eastward through the day, so
this will be the tail end of the heavy rain in Seward. More on
that in the hydrology section below.

Less extreme rainfall amounts are expected on Monday through
Prince William Sound since the atmospheric river continues moving
east. Nevertheless most of Prince William Sound, including Valdez
and Cordova, should get between 1 and 2 inches of rain Monday
afternoon and evening. Widespread shower activity will follow in
the wake of the atmospheric river across much of southern Mainland
Alaska as the southerly onshore wind flow continues. Thus, very
little in the way of sunshine is expected. In addition, strong
winds through Turnagain Arm and the Anchorage Hillside are likely
going into Monday, with only a gradual weakening to the winds
expected through the day.

The parent low over the Bering weakens as it moves into Southwest
Alaska Tuesday evening. However, this will be in advance of a new
North Pacific low that will approach the Alaska Peninsula and
Kodiak Island on Wednesday. There is still significant
uncertainty, with the GFS and Canadian models in decent agreement,
while the EC is significantly slower with the low's movement.
Going with the GFS/Canadian agreement, steady rains move back into
much of Southern mainland Alaska on Wednesday. The low slows to a
crawl either over Bristol Bay or Cook Inlet, which will keep wet
weather ongoing in Southcentral through Thursday, with dryer
weather moving in from west to east on Friday. This may eventually
allow for a return to seasonably cold conditions on Friday,
assuming this solution in the models pans out, along with much
drier weather as well for the weekend.

.HYDROLOGY...

An atmospheric river moving across the coast of Southern Alaska
the next few days will cause several hydrologic issues across the
area. First up will be the Chignik area, where as much as 6 inches
of rain in 36 hours is expected starting after midnight tonight
and continuing into Sunday morning. Since this will be a large
amount of rain for that area in such a short time, flooding and
mudslide concerns exist, but the exact nature of the impacts
remains to be seen. A Special Weather Statement has been issued
highlighting this.

The atmospheric river is expected to next impact the southern
Kenai Peninsula, especially the Seward area, from Sunday into
Monday. This will largely be the result of a slowing of the
eastward movement of that feature in between fronts. Between 3 and
5 inches of rain are expected for that area over a 24 hour period
from about noon Sunday through noon Monday. This is expected to
cause flooding concerns at the airport, at the Lowell Creek
diversion tunnel, and perhaps elsewhere in the area. A Flood Watch
has been issued for the area.

Other areas of concern include the Anchor River area north of
Homer, where a prolonged period of heavy rain may lead to flooding
concerns. The primary forecast question is how prevalent will the
downslope drying be in that area. There is significant
disagreement as to this question, so it too will need to be
monitored. Another concern is the rivers and streams that drain
the Talkeetnas into the eastern Susitna Valley. Rapidly rising
freezing levels may lead to rain falling on top of some freshly
fallen snow, which is also on top of the couple feet of snow
already on the ground in the higher elevations. This could cause
some flooding concerns in that area in addition to increasing the
avalanche threat.
