Very light, fine grain snow continues early this morning. It is
expected to continue to move east and eventually exit by noon. Snow
may occasionally mix with freezing drizzle across the east. The
remainder of the short term will be dry.
However, the forecast becomes tricky tonight as the region is
sandwiched between a sfc low heading for the Great Lakes and
entering Arctic high pressure dropping in from the northwest.
Northwest winds will increase this evening west of the James Valley
and in the east on Sunday. Hi-res guidance keeps the strongest winds
out of the James Valley. All models except the Canadian have low
lapse rates west of the Sisseton Hills, but indicate 5-7 C/km by
Sunday along the northern portions of the I-29 corridor into west
central MN. Those higher lapse rates will combine with 50 mph gusts
to really loft the snow that has fallen. With 24 hours still to go
before blizzard conditions would materialize, decided to issue a
watch instead of a warning. Confidence, though, is high for blizzard
conditions in far northeastern SD and west central MN. The big
question is whether the stronger winds that will be present in other
areas, including the southern I-29 corridor through Watertown will
have sufficient lapse rates to continuously loft the snow.
Confidence is lower for Watertown south for sustained quarter mile
visibilities.
The other question is just how bad visibilities will be tonight
between the Missouri River and the James Valley. Again, lapse rates
at the time are actually negative on most guidance, but winds will
be gusting to 40 mph with higher gusts near the Leola Hills. Decided
on an advisory due to the lack of anticipated widespread bad
conditions with limited lofting, but local areas could see 1/4 mile
vsby at times.
.LONG TERM...(Sunday Evening through Friday)

The extended pattern continues to be active, but not quite of the
same intensity as the last two months. Winds will be initially quite
strong Sunday evening but diminishing rapidly as a ridge moves in
from the northwest. There will be some mid-level warm advection,
which will generate some light snow, but amounts will be extremely
limited early Monday. 925mb temperatures bottom out during the day
and mixing will be negligible with an east/northeast wind. Blended
guidance places our high temperature right around zero, achievable
despite the snow cover this time of year.
A weak clipper will pass west of the CWA Tuesday. Most of the snow
with this feature will be in North Dakota, though it may help
reinvigorate winds across the area with some blowing/drifting going
into Tuesday night. Some uncertainty this far out on the degree and
timing however. Cold advection follows for the middle of next week,
with potentially some brief moderation late next week.
