Made some adjustments to snow accumulations with the banded event
occurring from Dewey to McPherson counties. While most areas will
see 2 to 4 inches of snow through tonight, locations in the band
are experiencing 1 to 1.5 inch per hour rates this morning which
will result in 5 to 8 inches total accumulation by the time the
system exits.

.SHORT TERM...(Today and Tonight)
Issued at 341 AM CST Wed Feb 6 2019

Active pattern through Thursday across the region. Initial band of
snow is progged by most models to shoot out across the western CWA
this morning ahead of weak pv anomaly that heads northeast into the
Northern Plains. The progged axis of snowfall, however, is a bit
different between the models. The GFS is the most aggressive and
moves the band from the Missouri valley east to the James valley.
Most other guidance keeps it mainly over areas west of the James
valley. In-house model blend favors this idea so went with that for
now. An area of 3-6 inches looks possible with this band through
about noon. Then, for the afternoon and evening, it looks like a
more widespread area of light snow will move into or develop over
the region as s/w energy continues to lift across the region. The
main chunk of energy/mid level low lifts out across the CWA late
Wednesday night and Thursday morning. This is the time period where
the eastern CWA could pick up several inches of snow. Plus, the
winds will be increasing from late Wednesday night into Thursday,
with blowing/drifting expected at that time. Grand total snowfall
across the CWA may reach 6+ inches in spots, but this is expected to
occur over a 24-36 hr period. Cold temperatures today will be colder
on Thursday as an even colder airmass filters south into the
forecast area. Current winter weather advisories will likely need to
be transitioned to wind chill headlines as the event unfolds over
the area.

.LONG TERM...(Thursday through Tuesday)

Lingering snow over northeastern SD/west central MN will quickly exit
Thursday evening. Gusty winds will linger into the morning hours
Friday, assisting in keeping the wind chill values in the -25 to -45
degree range. We do expect wind chill headlines will be needed
through at least mid morning across the forecast area, and
potentially into the afternoon hours over the far northeastern
counties. Bitterly cold to dangerous wind chills will again be
possible Friday night into Saturday morning, although not quite as
low as Friday morning.

Dry weather should remain through early Saturday, as cold and dry
high pressure dominates much of the region. Low pressure across CO/W
NE Saturday morning will push a trough across the forecast area, and
has the potential for light snow with little to no accumulations
expected. A higher chance of snow will occur Sunday as the surface
low lingers to our west, and 500mb trough pushes overhead. The
operational GFS is the more robust with the qpf, but is middle of
the road when compared to the ensembles. Will keep the 30-60 percent
chance. Another round moves across Monday night into Tuesday, as a
stronger 500mb trough/sfc low shift across the Northern and Central
Plains.
