.A fast-moving and vigorous disturbance aloft has moved over the
Great Basin, and will be sweeping eastward over New Mexico and 
Colorado early Monday. Stout winds aloft and an associated surface
low will accompany this disturbance, leading to strong to 
potentially damaging winds over portions of the central and 
eastern New Mexico.

VFR conditions currently prevail, but are forecast to deteriorate
overnight into Monday morning across western New Mexico as a Pacific
trough and associated cold front move into the state. MVFR conditions
in light snow are likely at KFMN and KGUP Monday morning...and
possible at KSAF. Otherwise, increasing southwest flow is forecast
today ahead of the front, with strong west winds forecast to develop
behind the front Monday. In addition areas of mountain obscurations
will develop with the frontal passage Monday morning and be slow to
improve.

.PREV DISCUSSION...333 AM MST Sun Feb 10 2019...
.SYNOPSIS...
A weak disturbance aloft crossed the Four Corners area last evening,
and a deeper trough of low pressure has moved inland off of the
Pacific. This will keep southwesterly flow aloft over the Land of
Enchantment today. Meager moisture will creep into parts of southern
New Mexico today and this evening, perhaps enough for a few
sprinkles or very light showers, and breezy conditions will redevelop
in parts of the state this afternoon. The previously mentioned
Pacific trough will cross northern New Mexico early Monday, bringing
big changes to the weather. Colder temperatures will sweep into the
state along with strong to severe winds. Any precipitation that
accompanies this system will be brief and light. Temperatures will
rebound Tuesday and Wednesday, but another vigorous weather
disturbance will take aim on New Mexico by Thursday with another
round of strong to severe winds expected.

.DISCUSSION...
Last evening's short wave trough brought in a faint ribbon of
moisture from a subtropical origin, enough to spawn virga. This
meager moisture will stay intact over the southern tier of the
forecast area through the morning, focusing more over southeastern
zones into the afternoon. Again, virga/sprinkles or very light
precipitation will be possible in these areas where cloud bases will
be lowest, hence giving best prospects of hydrometeors to survive
their fall to the ground. Despite a lowering of mid-tropospheric
pressure heights, temperatures will warm by at least a couple degrees
where clouds will be thinner than yesterday, and the eastern plains
will benefit from a downsloping southwesterly wind component that
will boost temperatures by several degrees.

The trough that will be moving over the Great Basin today will
quickly race toward NM/CO tonight into Monday. Just before dawn
Monday, the trough axis should be encroaching upon the Four Corners
with a stout mid level jet rounding its base and a prominent
baroclinic zone also keeping pace. Clouds and precipitation appear to
be relegated to the leading edge of the baroclinic zone, stretching
from a south southwest to north northeast axis. This will leave only
a brief window of opportunity Monday morning for a quick band of
precipitation, almost squall-like. The early arrival of the front
(plunging through all of western and most of central NM before noon)
will indeed impact high temperatures with most locations expected to
fall short of normal by 5 to 15 degrees. The winds will be a huge
concern as well with 700 mb wind fields depicting a large swath of 50
kt speeds (and possibly as high as 60 kt over the southern
mountains) along with a 998 mb surface low over the TX/OK panhandles.
Will be hoisting a High Wind Watch for portions of central to
eastern NM with this forecast issuance, reflective of the highest
confidence areas to receive gusts meeting or exceeding 50 kt (58
mph).

A chilly night will be on hand Monday night in the wake of the cold
front with a spell of clearing before the next slug of high cirrus
clouds move in. Tuesday and Wednesday will be characterized by rather
stiff zonal flow aloft. Rising pressure heights will carry high
temperatures back to normal Tuesday, climbing above in eastern NM on
Wednesday with moderate breezes developing.

Thursday...oh my! A 520 decameter low off the coast of OR will take a
more northern track, crossing into the northern Rockies by Thursday
afternoon. This will send the 140 kt core of the polar jet just south
of I-40 and right across NM. To say it looks windy would be a gross
understatement, especially along and east of the central mountain
chain where there will be closer proximity to a deep 989 mb lee side
surface low. There is still potential for the track of the upper low
to shift, but at this point Thursday certainly appears to be a
subsequent candidate for wind advisories and high wind warnings.
Forecast models also boast more precipitation with this system due to
better dynamics aloft and an ingest of eastern Pacific moisture.
Confidence in precipitation is low for now, given the poor medium
range model performance of the past few weeks (with regards to
eastern Pacific moisture transport).

The pattern thereafter stays progressive with strong and enduring
zonal flow. This will keep periodic episodes of breezy to windy
conditions over NM with potential for notable disturbances should the
flow buckle accordingly.

.FIRE WEATHER...
After gusty southwest winds today and near to above normal
temperatures, a sharp upper level trough and associated cold front
will cross the central and southern Rockies on Monday with strong
winds, below normal temperatures and a chance for precipitation
mainly over western and north central areas. Strong winds will be the
main concern with gusts potentially ranging from 30 to 50 mph,
except around 60 mph in the Sandia/Manzano and Gallinas Mountains and
across the east central plains. Speeds will begin to strengthen out
of the southwest in the early morning, but a Pacific cold front will
shift directions out of the northwest areawide by early afternoon.
Precipitation with the system will generally be light, with the
potential for a few inches on the higher peaks of the northern
mountains. Humidities will drop below 15 percent across much of the
eastern plains and middle Rio Grande valley, where critical fire
weather conditions are expected in the afternoon and very early
evening; however, below normal temperatures and Haines of 2-3 will
preclude the need for a Red Flag Warning.

Warmer temperatures are expected in between storm systems Tuesday
and Wednesday. After weaker winds Tuesday, speeds will begin to
strengthen again Wednesday as an upper level trough begins to cross
the northern and central Rockies. This trough will steer a powerful
jet stream over NM as it passes north of the state on Thursday.  The
700 mb flow is forecast by the GFS to vary around 45 to 65 knots
with a broad area over 50 knots. Meanwhile, a roughly 989 mb
(depending on the model) surface low is forecast to develop over
eastern CO. The potential exists for widespread 50-60 mph winds with
gusts near 65 mph possible along and east of the central mountain
chain. A broader area of wetting precipitation is expected over
western and north central areas mainly Wednesday night through
Thursday evening. Critical fire weather conditions are expected
across much of the northeast plains and parts of the east central
plains Wednesday, where widespread humidities below 15 percent are
expected. High temperatures will be around 6-11 degrees above normal
with a Haines Index in the 3-4 range.

A series of weaker disturbances in west and southwest flow aloft
will keep a chance for showers in the forecast mainly for west slope
locations Friday and Saturday. Winds will be weaker, but still
gusty.

This hazardous weather outlook is for portions of northern and
central New Mexico.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

No hazardous weather is expected.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Monday through Saturday

Strong to severe winds are expected across much of northern and
central New Mexico on Monday as a potent disturbance aloft and an
attendant cold front sweep into the state. The strongest winds will
be found along portions of the central mountain chain and into the
east central high plains of New Mexico where occasional gusts may
reach 55 to 60 mph.

Stronger winds will redevelop over northeastern New Mexico Wednesday
afternoon where low humidity is forecast. This could lead to a few
hours of critical fire weather in the northeastern plains of the
state.

Another round of strong to severe winds are forecast for Thursday. In
a similar fashion, areas along and east of the central mountain chain
will once again be susceptible to the highest wind speeds Thursday
afternoon.
