00Z TAF CYCLE
Breezy to windy westerlies continue this hour and are expected to
taper off after sunset as the atmosphere decouples. MVFR conditions
expected to move into northwestern TAF locations, KFMN and KGUP in
the overnight and into the morning. Precipitation will mostly be
relegated to the northern third of the state over the higher terrain,
but also reaching valley locations through the northwestern quarter
of the state tomorrow as a Pacific front moves through. Mtn
obscurations with sn atop the mtns will also be favored through the
TAF period through northern NM. Stronger wlys are expected back again
by tomorrow afternoon at most TAF locations with gusts of 30-40kts
possible, upwards of 40-50kts at higher elevation TAF locations to
include KSRR. LLWS is once again a concern at some locations
including KLVS and KROW. Meanwhile, a backdoor front will bring a
northerly wind shift to northeastern NM, including KTCC by mid-day.

.SYNOPSIS...
We are in for quite the change in the pattern to finish off the
weekend. A series of disturbances will bring accumulating snowfall to
the northern mountains and some rain/snow mixes to the lower
elevations. Strong winds will reach their peak on Sunday along and
east of the central mountain chain. Travel may become hazardous
Sunday morning with blowing snow and near white out conditions. Much
colder air will filter in behind the storm system, with temperatures
returning to near to above normal by mid-week next week.

.DISCUSSION...
SHORT TERM...(TONIGHT THROUGH MONDAY)...
Forecast challenges will be the extent and how much snow will
accumulate now into Monday and how strong will the winds be Sunday.

Total snowfall this forecast cycle was similar to last nights, so
not making any changes to the winter storm warning and advisories.
Thought about adding the Jemez Mountains in the winter weather
advisories but the coverage of decent snowfall was very small.
Of more concern is the Johnson and Bartlett Mesas zone where we
could see advisory type snow later Sunday and Sunday night. Night
crew will need to take a good look at it. So, snow will continue off
and on over the northwest and north central mountains and northeast
through Sunday night and probably into Monday. Highest accumulations
will be in the Tusas Mountains, including Chama.

700 mb winds increase tonight into Sunday, reaching forecasted
speeds of 60kt to nearly 70kt. However, MOS guidances from most
models do not have surface winds reaching warning criteria where we
have high wind watches. The exception is the NBS MOS which has 35kt
plus from SRR to CQC and LVS. After coordination with EPZ and MAF we
decided to leave the watches as is and see what the next model runs
show. My apologies to the night crew!

Strong cold fronts from the west and north will invade the state
Sunday, with very cold air behind them. Monday night lows will rival
the coldest temperatures so far late this fall.

LONG TERM...(MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY)...
Fairly quiet from Monday night onward. A reinforcing punch of colder
air will filter in Monday night as another (drier) upper level trough
clips the northeastern corner of the state, leaving teens, single
digits, and negatives the commonplace for Monday and Tuesday night's
low temperatures. Indeed, the GFS 700 mb temperatures range from -10
to -12C. A ridge of high pressure will cross late Tuesday, helping to
warm temperatures beginning Wednesday.

An upper level trough and associated Pacific cold front will cross
the state Thursday, triggering a few rain and snow showers across the
northern tier. Little to no accumulation is expected from this
system. Winds will become gusty across the eastern plains, as a
leeside trough develops over the southern Rockies. A weak ridge will
arrive for the early part of the weekend, with highs ranging from 40s
across the north to 60s across the southern portion of the state on
Saturday.

.FIRE WEATHER...
No significant fire weather concerns through the next seven days
other than poor ventilation. Sunday and Monday will produce mostly
good to excellent ventilation, except poor in the northeast. Then
widespread poor ventilation each day except Thursday.

Strong west flow will bring in snow over the northwest and north
central mountains and northeast into Monday. Heaviest snow will be
around Chama. Strongest winds will be on the east central highlands.
It will turn noticeably colder Sunday through Tuesday before a
gradual warming trend begins thereafter. No precipitation is
forecast from Tuesday through Saturday of next week.

This hazardous weather outlook is for portions of north and central
New Mexico.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

Disturbances passing eastward along the Colorado and New Mexico
border will bring periods of snow with light accumulation today.
Snow will then increase in coverage and intensity tonight and Sunday
as a stronger storm system crosses from the west. Up to 6 inches of
snow will be possible by Sunday morning in the Tusas and Sangre de
Cristo Mountains. In addition, strong winds will develop late
tonight with gusts from 40 to 50 mph over mountain peaks across the
forecast area. The strongest winds should impact the southern tier
of mountains.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Sunday through Friday

Sunday...Accumulating snow in the northern mountains will continue
through Sunday, before tapering off Sunday evening. Storm total
accumulations should reach several inches in the Sangre de Cristo
Mountains, with over a foot across the high peaks of the Tusas
Mountains. Lighter amounts are expected in the Jemez and Chuska
Mountains. In addition, winds will strengthen further early Sunday
morning, while spreading to the east slopes of the central mountain
chain and adjacent high plains. The potential exists for wind gusts
to 60 mph over the southwest and south central mountains, as well as
the highest peaks of the southern Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Winds
will weaken Sunday evening, while gusts to 50 mph linger along the
east slopes of the south central mountains. The wind will blow and
drift the snow in the northern mountains, producing periods of
whiteout conditions with near zero visibility and very cold wind
chill temperatures.
