* At 452 PM MST, a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado
  was located near Ranchvale, or 13 miles northwest of Clovis, moving
  northeast at 30 mph.

  HAZARD...Tornado and quarter size hail.

  IMPACT...Flying debris will be dangerous to those caught without 
           shelter. Mobile homes will be damaged or destroyed.

CENTRAL CURRY COUNTY...
    
At 500 PM MST, a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado
was located 8 miles north of Ranchvale, or 15 miles northwest of 
Clovis, moving northeast at 30 mph. This storm is passing over State 
Road 288 near County Road P. 

HAZARD...Tornado and quarter size hail.

SOURCE...Radar indicated rotation.

.SYNOPSIS...
Showers and isolated thunderstorms across central and eastern New
Mexico today will transition to snow showers tonight as colder air
arrives from the northwest. The focus for light to moderate snowfall
will continue over the higher terrain where several more inches are
likely through Saturday night. Temperatures will be very cold in the
wake of this system on Sunday with bitter wind chills. Cold and dry
weather will continue through next week with periods of cloud cover
and perhaps some more snow by next Thursday.

.DISCUSSION...
SHORT TERM...(TONIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT)...
Moisture advection in the lower boundary layer has outperformed what
was modeled yesterday and has limited the extent of winter weather
impacts given higher snow levels. In addition, the higher dewpoint
airmass across east central and southwest NM has increased surface-
based instability and resulted in more robust convection, with
thunderstorms ongoing and forecast to increase this evening near the
TX border before focusing across the Panhandle overnight. We're
still anticipating the more significant snowfall totals in the
southwest and northern mountains, including Raton Pass, where
warnings will continue overnight through Saturday. However, the
northeast highlands are currently above freezing and the KLVS
dewpoint temperatures is currently 36. In addition, winds will
become downslope out of the west overnight to the lee of the Sangres
before cold air advection kicks-in which effectively nixes the
winter weather threats there. Will cancel the advisory for those
zones and continue the remainder of the winter weather highlights. A
trough dropping out of the SW Canada is still forecast to impact the
area tomorrow as the first upper low/trough pulls NE out into SE
Colorado. The second trough will be much colder than the first and
snow to liquid ratios will ramp-up Saturday, allowing snow to
continue rack-up over the higher terrain of northern and western NM.
A much colder airmass will follow Saturday night and bring well
below normal temperatures with lows in the single digits and teens
across much of western and northern NM. Travel across western and
northern NM may continue to be dicey through Saturday night.

LONG TERM...(SUNDAY THROUGH FRIDAY)...
Snow showers will be tapering off across southeast NM Sunday morning
as the remnant 543dm H5 low shifts east and fills through the day.
12Z NAEFS shows 700mb temps near -12C in the wake of the departing
system for Sunday. This will translate to high temps of 10-15F below
normal with brisk northwest winds. Wind chills will hover in the
teens and 20s for the entire day. Very dry air with light winds and
strong surface high pressure will make Monday morning the coldest of
the week with single digits and teens for just about the entire area.

The next upper level low pressure system will shift south down the CA
coastline Monday and Tuesday then across northern Mexico Wednesday.
Model guidance has come into much better agreement with this system
so continued to trend POPs lower for Monday and Tuesday with more cold
temperatures. A secondary piece of jet energy is shown diving south
thru the central Rockies Thursday with potential to deliver another
reinforcing blast of cold air to NM and some snow across the north
and west.

.FIRE WEATHER...
Two upper level lows will impact the state this weekend, the
first tonight into tomorrow and the second and colder low late
tomorrow through tomorrow night. Good chances for wetting
precipitation will continue into Saturday night and increasingly
focus over the northern and western mountains where significant
snowfall accumulation is likely. A much colder airmass will follow
Saturday night and below to well below normal temperatures will
prevail from Sunday through Tuesday. Vent rates will continue to be
a mixed-bag, though mostly good, through Sunday then trend down and
be mostly poor through Wednesday. Chances for wetting precipitation
will briefly return Wednesday night into next Thursday as an upper
level trough pushes across.

.AVIATION...
18Z TAF CYCLE
A mixed-bag of VFR to LIFR conditions prevail across the area as a
potent upper low approaches from over southern AZ. Improvement is
forecast this afternoon at KLVS and KROW, followed by KTCC. However,
some deterioration is forecast at KFMN with the onset of snow later
today, which will likely continue off-and-on through the night and
into Saturday morning. Deterioration to MVFR is likely at KABQ/KAEG
this afternoon in rain, with a change-over to snow by early evening
then improvement back to VFR. Widespread mountain obscurations
prevail and will continue through this evening, with some improvement
overnight into Saturday morning along the east slopes of the central
mountain chain.

This hazardous weather outlook is for portions of north and central
New Mexico.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

Heavy snow is expected for the northern and western mountains today
and tonight, while a mix of rain and snow is expected for lower
elevations, at least during the daytime period. Temperatures will
quickly drop tonight, allowing any lingering precipitation to change
over to snow. Travel impacts are possible, including across the I-40
and I-25 corridors across northern and western New Mexico. Fog may
also impact much of eastern New Mexico today. Freezing fog or
freezing drizzle may also occur this morning across far northeast New
Mexico.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Saturday through Thursday

Snow will persist through Saturday, particularly across mountainous
areas, though a back door cold front may provide additional focus for
light snow across northeast New Mexico. The storm system will move
out late Saturday night, leaving very cold temperatures in its wake.

storm.
