.Strong west wind will continue, peaking this afternoon from one
to 5 pm across much of eastern New Mexico. Wind gusts between 60 
and 65 mph are likely through the afternoon hours with the
strongest wind speeds focusing through east-central New Mexico.

* TIMING...Winds will peak in strength during the early afternoon
  hours, and decrease early evening. 

* VISIBILITY...Locally reduced in dust prone locations.

* LOCAL IMPACTS...Take action to secure trash cans, lawn
  furniture, and other loose or lightweight outdoor objects.
  Dangerous cross winds can be expected on north to south oriented
  roadways, especially for high profile vehicles. Westbound
  drivers on I-40 will experience strong headwinds. Flimsy 
  structures may blow over.

Remember, A High Wind Warning means damaging winds are imminent
or highly likely. Sustained wind speeds of at least 40 mph or

The National Weather Service in Albuquerque has issued a Wind
Advisory, which is in effect until 7 PM MDT this evening. 

* LOCATION...West Slopes and Northern and Southern Sangre de
  Cristo Mountains.
 
* WINDS...West 30 to 35 mph with occasional gusts to between 50 
  and 55 mph. 

* TIMING...Winds will increase early this afternoon, peaking from
  1 to 3 pm MDT before slowly tapering by 7 pm MDT

* VISIBILITY...Locally reduced in areas of blowing snow, generally
  above 9500 feet.

* LOCAL IMPACTS...Take action to secure trash cans, lawn
  furniture, and other loose or lightweight outdoor objects.
  Hazardous cross winds can be expected on north to south oriented
  roadways. Westbound drivers through Glorieta Pass on I-25 will 
  experience strong headwinds. 

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Motorists should exercise caution while travelling. Sudden gusts

.SYNOPSIS...
Strong to very strong west winds will develop this morning in the
wake of an unseasonably cold storm system, mainly across eastern New
Mexico. Strong winds will continue Wednesday and Thursday as another
storm system moves into Arizona. Winds will weaken by Friday but
still remain in the breezy category. Best chances for showers and a
few thunderstorms from the mid-week system are forecast over far
northwest New Mexico Wednesday night and Thursday while other areas
remain dry. High temperatures will remain below to well below average
for this time of year through Friday, warming up to near average for
the weekend.

.DISCUSSION...
Closed upper-level low deepening over northeast NM early this
morning. The associated surface low is forecast to bomb out over
western KS during the day (984mb), setting the stage for strong to
high winds from the central mountain chain eastward. Models agree
that the strongest winds will occur from the central highlands east
to the TX line including the I-40 corridor and from the east slopes
of the Sangre de Cristos east to the northeast highlands including
the I-25 corridor. Winds will subside toward sunset as the surface
low accelerates northward into southern Nebraska. Weather prediction
models agree that another closed upper-level low will take shape over
the western Great Basin late tonight and Wednesday. This low is
forecast to remain mainly west of NM Wednesday and Thursday but it
will result in more strong winds both days, primarily for southern
and eastern areas. Best chances for showers and possibly a few
thunderstorms from this low will be across far northwest NM mainly
Wednesday night and Thursday as well as near the TX border in the
form of strong to severe thunderstorms.

GFS and ECWMF agree that the above mentioned low will fill/weaken
and lift to the northeast Thursday night and Friday. Less wind will
be the result for NM but southwest breezes will likely continue most
areas as yet another short-wave trough/low lifts northeastward
through southern California and into western Arizona Friday night
and Saturday. This feature helps strengthen the low-level return flow
over eastern NM Friday night into Saturday, potentially resulting in
dryline convection erupting along/near the TX line both Saturday and
Sunday.

Yet another unseasonably deep closed low is forecast to move into
the western U.S. early next week. Operational GFS appears too
progressive with this system bringing it eastward through NM on
Memorial Day while the ECWMF keeps a large closed low over the Great
Basin, keeping NM breezy with chances for convection over eastern NM.
ECWMF forecast is preferred given its greater skill scores during a
positive PNA and the fact that it keeps a persistence forecast.

.FIRE WEATHER...
Chances for wetting precipitation will decrease today and be
confined to the northern mountains and northeast plains as the upper
low pulls northeast into the central/southern US plains. Well below
normal temperatures will prevail in the wake of yesterday's cold
frontal passage. Windy to very windy conditions will persist, with
the strongest winds forecast along the east slopes of the central
mountain chain east to the Texas border. Winds and humidity will hit
critical thresholds across southern portions of the area this
afternoon, but lower Haines and well below normal temperatures will
not be supportive of large fire growth.

A warming trend will begin Wednesday, but daytime temperatures will
remain below normal through the end of the work week. Windy to very
windy conditions will redevelop Wednesday with a deepening lee side
trough in response to the approach of another Pacific low. Winds and
humidity will hit critical threshold Wednesday afternoon over a
larger area, but again lower Haines values and below normal
temperatures will limit fire behavior and potential for large fire
growth. Look for more of the same Thursday.

Windy conditions will redevelop over the weekend thanks to the
approach of yet another Pacific low, with the potential for critical
fire weather conditions across central and western portions of the
area. Gulf moisture will likely penetrate the eastern plains over
the weekend and may fuel wetting storms along a dryline.

06Z TAF CYCLE
VFR conditions prevail, with areas of mountain obscurations and
patches of MVFR conditions in rain and snow. Precipitation will
diminish through the TAF period and become focused along the west-
facing slopes and peaks of the northern mountains. Strong westerly
winds will persist and the strongest winds will be east of the
central mountain chain Tuesday. Gusts to between 40-50kts will be
common Tuesday afternoon and will impact KLVS and KTCC.

The strongest winds of the week are forecast for today with gusts as
high as 60 to 65 mph through the I-40 corridor of east-central New
Mexico as well as along the I-25 corridor from Las Vegas to Raton
Pass. Strong southwest winds will remain Wednesday, becoming less
intense each day through the end of the week.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Wednesday through Monday

Strong southwest winds will continue on Wednesday, becoming less
intense each day through the end of the week. As another storm system
approaches New Mexico from the west during the weekend, strong to
possibly severe thunderstorms are possible near the Texas border.
