Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Albuquerque NM 1040 AM MST Thu Mar 7 2019 .AVIATION... 18Z TAF CYCLE As a storm moves eastward across Colorado this afternoon, a band of mid and upper level clouds will continue to stream across New Mexico from the southwest. Light to occasionally moderate snow showers will fall across the northwest mountains and the north central mountains this afternoon and evening with periodic mountain obscurations. Otherwise, VFR conditions will prevail across the region this afternoon through the evening hours. The main aviation impact this afternoon through early evening will be strong west to southwest winds affecting southwest and south central portions of the state and areas to the east of the central mountains. Wind speeds between 25 and 35 knots will be common across these areas with frequent gusts to 40 to 45 knots and a few gusts to near 55 knots. Winds will fall below 15 knots by mid evening and then increase again by late morning on Friday across much of western and central New Mexico. && .PREV DISCUSSION...329 AM MST Thu Mar 7 2019... ...STRONG WIND TO END THE WORK WEEK WITH FIRE WEATHER CONCERNS TODAY... .SYNOPSIS... Strong winds are expected today and Friday, when west and southwest wind gusts will commonly reach 40 to 55 mph. Some areas will experience gusts over 60 mph both days. There will also be fire weather concerns across the eastern plains and middle Rio Grande Valley today. An upper level trough will bring cooler temperatures as well as rain showers, thunderstorms and mountain snow showers as it crosses from the west Friday and Friday night. A few inches of snow will be possible in the mountains, except for several inches in parts of the northern mountains. The potential exists for a stronger storm system to bring greater cooling and more widespread wetting precipitation Sunday night through Tuesday, as well as windy conditions Tuesday and Wednesday. && .DISCUSSION... A deepening upper level trough on the west coast will steer the jet stream over NM today and Friday with strong to very strong winds. Southwest and west wind gusts from 40 to 55 mph will be common today, except for gusts over 60 mph along and just east of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Southwest winds will strengthen in some places Friday with gusts from 40 to 55 mph, and the potential for broader coverage of gusts over 60 mph across southern areas and the east slopes of the central mountain chain. Strong winds will linger through much of Friday night as the upper trough crosses with a Pacific Cold front. The upper trough will also bring rain showers, thunderstorms and mountain snow showers mainly to northern, western and central areas Friday and Friday night. A few inches of snow accumulation will be possible in the mountains, except for a few to several inches in the northern mountains. The Tusas Mountains should receive the most snow with the potential for near 10 inches of snow along the Brazos Ridge. Breezy to windy conditions will linger into Saturday east of the continental divide as the flow shifts out of the northwest in the wake of Friday night's Pacific cold front. After a cooling trend that commences Friday with all the clouds and precipitation, readings will continue to cool Saturday when highs will bottom out near normal in the east and as much as 10 degrees below normal in the west. Except for continued cooling behind a back door cold front in the east, Sunday will bring warming temperatures and a break from strong winds. South winds will become gusty though, as a broad upper level low pressure system approaches NM from the west. The upper low will spread rain showers, thunderstorms and mountain snow showers to much of the forecast area as it crosses Sunday night through Tuesday. This storm system should have a better tap of Pacific moisture with a good shot of wetting precipitation areawide. The mountains should be able to accumulate a few to several inches of snow. That said, models still differ somewhat on track and timing so the favored locations for the heaviest precipitation are still uncertain. There may also be windy conditions again Tuesday, when a Pacific cold front will cross, and also in the wake of the system on Wednesday. 44 && .FIRE WEATHER... ...RED FLAG WARNING THIS AFTERNOON AND EARLY EVENING FOR THE MIDDLE RIO GRANDE VALLEY...EAST CENTRAL AND NORTHEAST PLAINS...DUE TO STRONG WINDS AND LOW HUMIDITY... Strong westerly winds across NM today along with above normal temperatures and low humidity will generate critical fire weather conditions over the middle Rio Grande Valley and portions of the eastern plains. Surface winds will taper off this evening with good humidity recoveries expected. An upper level wave will approach the area from the west Friday and force even stronger winds over NM. Fortunately, moisture levels will increase along with cloud cover and the chance for a few rain showers within central and eastern NM. Several inches of snow are likely above 7500 feet in the northern mountains. Winds will remain elevated Friday night as the upper level wave passes overhead. Temperatures behind this system will trend 5 to 10 degrees cooler Saturday with widespread breezy northwest winds. Sunday will be a transition day with flow aloft becoming southwest ahead of the next more significant rain/snow event. A northeast wind shift will enter the eastern plains Sunday and shift westward to the central mountain chain Monday. Moisture levels will increase further Monday and Monday night as deep layer southerly flow increases over the region. Gusts from 40 to 55 mph will be common, except for potentially damaging gusts over 60 mph across the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, northeast and far northeast highlands. .DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Friday through Wednesday Friday, strong southwest winds will return with gusts from 45 to 55 mph, except potentially damaging gusts over 60 mph in the mountains and across parts of the eastern plains. The strong winds will linger into Friday night, especially along the central mountain chain, adjacent highlands and east central plains. An upper level trough will cross from the west Friday and Friday night with rain showers, mountain snow showers and thunderstorms. A few thunderstorms may produce damaging wind gusts. A few inches of snow are expected in the mountains, except a few to several inches in the northern mountains. Saturday, strong winds may return along and just east of the central mountain chain, where gusts may reach 50 mph once again as the flow shifts out of the northwest. Sunday night through Tuesday, a broad upper level low pressure system will cross from the west with the potential for a few to several inches of snow accumulation in the mountains.
