* WHAT...Light snow will develop this morning becoming heavy late
  this afternoon and tonight. Light to occasional moderate 
  periods of snow will continue through Saturday morning. Travel 
  will be very difficult to impossible. Expect damage to trees. 
  Total snow accumulations of 6 to 12 inches between 6000 and 8000
  feet, 12 to 24 inches between 8000 and 10000 feet, with 
  localized amounts up to 36 inches or greater near the crest. 
  Wind gusts of 60 to 70 mph possible exposed ridgetops.

Snow has been primarily confined west of the Southern Sierra 
Crest overnight and this morning. Snow showers will taper off

.SYNOPSIS...Patchy fog possible this morning, otherwise look for
more sunshine today and warmer temperatures. The next powerful
storm system will bring heavy snow to the southern Sierra and White
Mountains Thursday through Friday night. Strong winds will be the
primary concern Thursday and Friday across the remainder of
the southern Great Basin and Mojave Desert.

.UPDATE...Forecast for today looks to be on track. Patchy fog has
been dissipating through the morning with sun and think it should be
gone by midday. Otherwise, quiet weather is anticipated for
today with clouds increasing later this afternoon.

.PREVIOUS DISCUSSION...

.SHORT TERM...through Friday night.

Some patchy fog has developed in the wake of yesterdays mix of
rain/snow across the area. As of this writing some of the more
widespread fog is across the Pahrump Valley. After the fog burns off
later this morning the entire region will experience more sunshine
and warmer temperatures.

Focus then turns to the next powerful storm system digging down the
British Columbia coast tonight before closing off west of
Washington/Oregon Thursday. Very deep upper low with H5 heights as
low as 512 mb and H5 temperatures as cold as -40 deg Celsius. Strong
onshore flow into northern California will lead to orographically
enhanced precipitation tonight-Thursday morning. The area of enhance
precipitation will eventually slide south reaching the southern
Sierra Nevada Thursday afternoon. The heaviest period of snow for
the southern Sierra and White Mountains looks to be Thursday night
with lighter snow continuing all the way through Friday night.
Snowfall rates of 2 inches of greater/hour are possible. High winds
will be occurring as well creating blowing and drifting snow. A
Winter Storm Watch will be issued with this package.

As the southern Sierra takes the brunt of the storm, lighter amount
or rain/snow will spread across the southern Great Basin and Mojave
Desert. However, primary impact for the rest of the region looks to
be wind. Models showing strongest belt of winds of Thursday
developing over western San Bernardino, Inyo, Esmeralda, Nye,
Lincoln and the Spring Mountains. Also, need to monitor southerly
winds across the Lake Mead NRA. On Friday, stronger winds continue
over that same area but encompass the rest of Clark and Mohave
Counties. Confident Wind Advisories will be issued later and won't
be surprised if a few areas could see high enough gusts to warrant a
High Wind Warning. Cold air associated with the powerful low finally
reaches our northern zones Friday, while mild but gusty conditions
occur across the Mojave Desert.

.LONG TERM...Saturday through Tuesday night.

Aforementioned trough will swing across the area on Saturday,
spreading chances for showers and higher elevation snow southward;
exiting the area to the east Sunday morning. Highest precip chances
will remain across the southern Great Basin, the southern Sierra,
and the Arizona Strip with mainly isolated shower activity
elsewhere. Highest precip accumulations over the weekend will be
associated with the frontal boundary passing through the area from
the Sierra and Esmeralda County Saturday morning through Inyo and
central Nye counties Saturday afternoon and finally through Lincoln
and Mohave counties Saturday night. Additional amounts of up to 0.25
inches (Trace-3 inches of snow) will be possible with higher values
likely across the higher elevations of the Sierra and southern Great
Basin with 3-6 inches of additional snow possible. Breezy, southwest
winds will continue into Saturday ahead of the approaching trough
and frontal boundary with gusts over 40 mph more isolated than in
previous days. Winds will shift to the north in the wake of the
passing cold front with no significant speeds expected. As trough
exits on Sunday high pressure will build in behind ushering in
quieter weather to start the week with only lingering breezes down
the Colorado River Valley. Temps will drop back below normal on
Saturday through the end of the period.

.AVIATION...For McCarran...A few early morning clouds will give way
to morning sunshine before more mid/high clouds increase tonight.
Light winds this morning give way to an increase in southwest winds
late this afternoon. Those winds will continue overnight before
higher gusts develop Thursday morning.

For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast
California...Patchy fog this morning with any lingering cloudiness
over Mohave County diminishing by mid-morning. Mid/High clouds over
northern Nevada will continue to spread south over the southern
Great Basin and Mojave Desert this afternoon and tonight. Mainly
light winds this morning will give way to increasing south/southwest
winds this afternoon and tonight.
