.SYNOPSIS...Temperatures will steadily lower today through the
weekend as an area of low pressure moves over the Great Basin.
Strong and gusty winds will accompany the cool trend, especially
on Friday. There is also a chance for showers and a few
thunderstorms in areas from northern Inyo County east to northern
Lincoln County Friday through early next week.

.SHORT TERM...Through Saturday.

Still very warm across the region following a record breaking day of
heat yesterday - McCarran Airport is at 85 degrees as of 2 AM. High
temperature records will no longer be in jeopardy this week as a
cooling trend is on tap over the next several days. Temps will
steadily drop through the end of the work week and into the weekend
as a shortwave trough sags south from Oregon/Washington into the
Great Basin Friday. By Saturday, temperatures will fall back to near
or slightly below normal for mid May.

Along with the cooler temperatures, strong winds will develop ahead
of this disturbance. Breezy south winds are expected today, with
some isolated areas in northwest Arizona reaching 40 MPH gusts. A
much stronger belt of prefrontal winds will develop Friday
stretching from the western Mojave Deserts through southern Nevada
and into northwest Arizona, with wind gusts between 40-55 MPH
expected. In Las Vegas the strongest winds will favor the western
and southwestern portions of the valley; however, breezy winds will
spread across the entire valley. Meanwhile to the north, a cold
front will usher in strong post-frontal winds between 40-50 MPH
across Inyo, Esmeralda, and central Nye Counties during the
afternoon and evening Friday. All that considered, Wind Advisories
were issued for the Mojave Desert zones with strong prefrontal winds
expected and the northern zones, including Inyo, Esmeralda, and
central Nye, for post-frontal winds. With these strong gusts, expect
patchy blowing dust, especially across San Bernardino County.

Chance for precip will increase Friday, mainly across northern
Lincoln County, as energy rounds the base of the cutoff. Shower
chances will spread westward Saturday bringing the potential for
light showers over the south Sierra, as well as Inyo and Esmeralda
counties.  In these areas, weak cold pool instability combined with
diurnal heating may result in very isolated thunderstorms during
Friday and Saturday afternoons.

.LONG TERM...Sunday through Thursday.

Good model agreement during the period with suite of models showing
closed low over the Great Basin. Center of upper low over northeast
Nevada Sunday progged to slowly fill/weaken and ever so slowly drift
northeast through eastern Idaho and northern Wyoming by Wednesday.
Cool pool aloft with H5 temperatures of -16 to -18 degrees C Sunday
across our northern area will moderate as well by Wednesday. There
will be enough moisture and instability especially during the
daytime Sunday-Tuesday to support a slight chance for showers and
thunderstorms. Those showers and thunderstorms will occur generally
along and north of a line from Caliente-Dyer-Bishop then south along
the eastern Sierra. By Wednesday and Thursday, models showing
another closed low moving into northern California. Increasing
southwest flow ahead of the system should bring an increase in
winds. Also, may see some showers or thunderstorms develop over the
southern Sierra and higher terrain of Esmeralda County on Thursday.

After temperatures bottom out Saturday, reading will warm but stay
within a few degrees of normal during the period.

.FIRE WEATHER...Strong southwest winds will develop across
northwest Arizona today. Stronger wind gusts between 40-50 MPH
are expected on Friday as well. Critical minimum relative
humidities, dry fuels, and gusty winds, will lead to dangerous
fire weather today and Friday. As such, a Red Flag Warning is in
effect today and again Friday for Mohave County.

Expected gusty north winds, dry fuels and low relative humidity
prompted the issuance of a Red Flag Warning for elevations below
5500 feet in the Inyo Forest, including the Owens Valley, Friday
afternoon and evening as a cold front sweeps across the region.

A cold front pushing south through central Nevada Friday will bring
the strongest belt of southwest winds to San Bernardino, southern
Nye, Clark, and Mohave Counties. At this time, fuels are not yet
critical across San Bernardino, Nye and Clark Counties.

.AVIATION...For McCarran...Prevailing south-southwest winds
throughout the period. Sustained wind will average around 15 kts
with gusts around 25 kts. Its possible wind gusts may subside for
several hours this morning with confidence moderate at best in that
scenario. Stronger wind Friday with gusts around 35 knots. No
significant clouds are expected.

For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast
California...Generally, south-southwest winds across the Mojave
Desert and southern Great Basin during the period. Wind gusts will
peak between 30-35 kts today. Stronger gusts likely between 35-45
kts Friday in a corridor between Barstow and Kingman. No significant
clouds.
