Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Las Vegas NV 915 AM PDT Mon Apr 9 2018 .SYNOPSIS...Dry and warm weather is expected across the area early this week. Outside of strong north winds forecast in the Colorado River Valley today, winds will be light to breezy at other locations. High pressure moving in from the west will raise temperatures through mid week before a potent system later this week brings strong winds, cooler temperatures and a chance of precipitation to parts of the area. && .UPDATE...North winds in place across much of the area with a fairly strong north/south gradient (10+ mb ELY/EED) in place across southern Nevada and northwest Arizona. The gradient has begun to slowly weaken and expect winds to trend slightly lower during the afternoon hours. Winds have been 20-25 kts in Laughlin and the Lake Wind Advisory looks good. Otherwise, have increased temperatures a couple of degrees in most locations for today based on current trends and the latest guidance. No other updates planned this morning. && .PREV DISCUSSION... 351 AM PDT Mon Apr 9 2018 .SHORT TERM...Tonight through Wednesday night. High pressure over the region will lead to warm and dry conditions today into Tuesday. Some northerly winds will remain down the Colorado River Valley today with occasional gusts approaching 40 mph. These winds will be strongest in the morning with winds diminishing during the afternoon. No changes to the Lake Wind Advisory, but looking at timing it may end up being cancelled earlier than 5pm. Shortwave will approach the west coast Tuesday and Wednesday pushing the ridge east and leaving the area in a dry southwest flow. With increased mixing Tuesday afternoon temperatures will jump about 5 to 10 degrees above todays highs and we will see some locally breezy conditions in the afternoon over portions of the area. The trough off the west coast will deepen Wednesday and increase the southwest flow over the area. Winds by afternoon will generally be 15 to 25 mph with some gusts approaching 35 mph. There will be some limited moisture with this shortwave and any showers will be confined to the Sierra and possibly the higher terrain of Esmeralda County. .LONG TERM...Thursday through Monday. A trough of low pressure will dig across the region late WED - early THU bringing strong winds and much cooler temperatures. By early Thursday morning, southwest to west winds will be near apex across much of the region, especially across San Bernardino and Clark counties. ECMWF MOS guidance has trended up in wind speeds and now has peak sustained winds of 40 kts for LAS early THU whereas GFS MOS has trended down a tad from 34 kts to 33 kts. The GFS and ECMWF 700mb winds have consistently been between 60-70 kts around the base of the trough as it digs across our area. In addition, GFS NSharp soundings are showing some downslope potential on the leeward side of the Spring Mountains overnight WED-early THU morning with a clear inversion. GFS9km cross section is also showing 60-70 kt downslope flow reaching Summerlin/Red Rock area early morning THU as well. Providing sufficient model consistencies over the last few days, widespread wind advisories and some high wind warnings will likely be needed in the coming days. Gusty winds will likely continue behind the strong cold front as well. Timing of the cold front has been fairly consistent over the last few days and should be sometime late morning to late afternoon Thursday. In the wake of the frontal passage, expect gusty northwest winds and much cooler temperatures. There is still come uncertainty with the intensity of the northwest winds THU afternoon-early Friday, but wind speeds look like they should meet wind advisory criteria for portions of our CWA. Models have been consistent in dropping temperature 15-25 degrees by THU afternoon. Limited moisture with this system should keep slight precipitation chances mainly limited to the northern reaches of our CWA through THU where some light rain and snow showers will be possible. Main precip impacts will be on the eastern Sierra, but with snow levels remaining fairly high snow accumulations should remain light (1-2 inches). Ridging moves over the region by late Friday into Saturday, but may be brief as another weather system begins to move in sometime late Sunday-Monday. With brief ridging in place Saturday-Sunday, expect calmer conditions and temperatures climbing back to near normal. && .AVIATION...For McCarran...Northerly gradient over the area has allowed winds to remain northwest to occasional northerly overnight. Winds are expected to become more northeast after 15z with speeds between 10-15 kts with occasional gusts to 20 kts which should remain through the afternoon. Winds will diminish this evening and may even go southwest drainage after 04z. Skies will remain clear. For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast California...A departing cold front has left a north wind regime in its wake. These north winds will linger through today, especially at sites along the Colorado River where gusts of 25-30 knots are likely. Elsewhere, lighter north to northeast winds are expected.
