...STRONG SPRING SNOW STORM TO AFFECT THE REGION...

.A strong storm system will affect the region from late tonight
through Friday night. Rain will change to snow from north to
south overnight tonight and early Friday over northeast Wyoming
and much of western South Dakota, and by midday Friday over south
central South Dakota. The snow will be heavy at times Friday into
Friday evening across much of western and south central South 
Dakota. Winds of 20 to 35 mph with gusts up to 60 mph can be 
expected across much of the west central South Dakota plains to 
parts of south central South Dakota, producing blizzard conditions.
This includes the Interstate 90 corridor east of Rapid City. The 
heaviest amounts of snow are expected to be south and east of the 
Black Hills, where a foot or more of snowfall is likely in many

this morning, gradually tapering off from west to east by early 
afternoon. Winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts to 45 mph can be 
expected across south central South Dakota, producing blizzard 
conditions at times.

The blizzard warning across south central South Dakota will expire
at 1 pm CDT. Snowfall has diminished across the area in the last
several hours, with visibility in most areas improving. There will
be some local areas of reduced visibility with blowing and
drifting snow for the next several hours before winds subside late
this afternoon.

.DISCUSSION...(This Evening Through Wednesday)
Issued at 241 PM MDT Wed Apr 11 2018

Upper level analysis shows slight ridging over the
western/central CONUS, with a trough moving into the Pacific
Northwest. Satellite shows mostly cloudy skies over the northern
plains, clearing from west to east. Scattered rain showers continue
to move through the CWA, mainly across northwestern SD, and there
has even been some lighting. Surface low sits over northeastern
WY/southwestern SD. Southwesterly winds earlier today have helped
temperatures warm into the 60s and 70s across southern portions of
the area, but winds are becoming gusty from the northwest behind
a cold front. Temperatures across northwestern SD remain in the
40s.

Upper trough will move onshore early Thursday, and chances for
precipitation will increase as low pressure approaches the region.
Temperatures will be cooler Thursday, but still warm enough for
rain. Weak theta-e advection and CAPE may allow for a few isolated
thunderstorms as well, which some of the hi-res models are picking
up on. As the surface low moves through WY, easterly winds will
increase across the CWA, especially over northeastern WY and
northwestern SD.

Models continue to come into better agreement on the southward track
of the low. The 700 mb low will shift from southeastern MT to
central NE Thursday night, with precip spreading over the region. As
cold air wraps into the area, rain will change to snow from
northwest to southeast. With plenty of moisture associated with this
system, heavy snow is expected to fall throughout Friday. Models
continue to indicate enhanced QPF across south central SD, with
around 1.5" of liquid precipitation expected there. Snowfall
rates will be particularly high (1-2" per hour) across south
central SD Friday afternoon, when frontogenesis strengthens
beneath the left exit region of the upper jet. Have shifted
highest snow amounts farther southeast into south central SD, with
over a foot possible there. Still expecting several inches of
heavy snow across much of western SD, but northeastern WY and the
southern Hills may see just a few inches. Pressure rises of 4-6
mb/3hrs support strong northerly winds Friday behind the low,
sustained 25 to 35 mph with gusts to 55 mph. Some stronger gusts
will be possible just east of the Black Hills, as well as across
south central SD. Will leave watch as it is, other than adding
blizzard wording to south central SD.

Snow and gusty winds will diminish Saturday morning as the low
shifts eastward. Cold airmass and fresh snowfall will keep
temperatures in the mid 30s to mid 40s on Saturday. Temperatures
will begin to warm Sunday into early next week, and conditions will
be dry as an upper ridge develops; however, another low pressure
system could bring some cooler temperatures and more precipitation
to the region towards the middle of next week.

Ahead of an upcoming storm system, chances for precipitation will
increase late tonight and persist into Thursday. Areas MVFR CIGS
will develop under the best -SHRA (-SN up high) mainly across far
northeast WY into northwest SD. Gusty east-southeast winds will
develop Thursday morning and persist into Thursday afternoon
which will feed moisture and create possible -TSRA late. Colder
air will push into the region Thursday night as the storm wraps
and and conditions deteriorate to IFR/LIFR due to snow and low
CIGS.

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for western South Dakota and
northeastern Wyoming.

No hazardous weather expected at this time.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Thursday through Tuesday

Some thunderstorms will be possible Thursday afternoon and evening.
Severe thunderstorms are not expected.

A strong storm system will affect the region from late Thursday
night through Friday night. Rain will change to snow from
northwest to southeast Thursday night and early Friday over
northeast Wyoming and much of western South Dakota, and by Friday
afternoon over south central South Dakota. The snow could be
heavy at times Friday into Friday evening. Winds of 20 to 35 mph
with gusts to around 50 mph will be possible, mainly on the South
Dakota plains, and especially to the east of the Black Hills.
This includes the Interstate 90 corridor. There remains a good
deal of uncertainty with this system that could significantly
affect the track and alter current snowfall and wind forecasts.
