Area Forecast Discussion...UPDATED National Weather Service Topeka KS 557 AM CDT Sun Oct 7 2018 ...Update to aviation forecast discussion... .SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight) Issued at 320 AM CDT Sun Oct 7 2018 8Z sfc map shows a diffuse sfc front extending from central OK east northeast through central MO. Isentropic ascent/850mb thetae advection north of the sfc boundary along with upper divergence in right entrance region of 300mb jet has enhanced rain and scattered t-storm activity across east central KS this morning. Water vapor appears to show a subtle wave across northeast OK with another possible wave across TX panhandle into southwest OK this morning. Expect scattered shower/t-storm activity to persist across much of the southeast half of the cwa this morning with some wane in the coverage/intensity as the upper wave and isentropic lift wanes for a time by midday. However...short range ensembles show a signal for another complex of convection moving northeast out of OK this afternoon as the sfc front attempts to mix northwest. Not sure how far northwest the front will actually get today so have stayed cooler across north central KS while dewpoints will likely drive highs near/southeast of the front. Cannot rule out a low end wind risk along or southeast of the front however confidence is low in the overall evolution of the afternoon convection today. Tonight...short range ensembles along with ECMWF and NAM suggest that another wet night is in store as 850mb LLJ of 35-45kts interacts with the low level boundary to produce more rain/t-storms across the area. The exact location of the heaviest rains remains uncertain at this point since the 850mb boundary should remain northwest of the area however the sfc front may only move to a point near the turnpike so axis from Emporia to Topeka and points northwest may see the greatest risk for more heavy rains tonight. In addition as the overall pattern amplifies through Sunday/Monday expect storm motions to become more northerly with time. This fits the overall flood watch area so will not make any changes to the area of the watch. .LONG TERM...(Monday through Saturday) Issued at 320 AM CDT Sun Oct 7 2018 Monday through Saturday... A deep mid-level closed low trough will be located across the Central Great Basin with expansive ridging seen over the eastern CONUS. A surface boundary will be located from Iowa extending towards central Kansas and would be the main area for lingering showers and thunderstorms Monday morning. This activity may diminish in the early afternoon hours before a cold front sets up across central Kansas, once again refocusing development Monday evening in north central Kansas. Near this boundary, CAPE anywhere from 500-1000 J/kg will exist with deep layer shear near 25-35 knots. With this in mind, cannot entirely rule out an isolated storm or two capable of producing some stronger winds near this surface feature. PWATs near 1.5 inches in this meridional corridor ahead of the front will make heavy rain, and consequentially, flooding a concern yet again for this day. Little eastward progression in the mid-level trough overnight Monday, with this feature beginning to lift into the central Plains during the afternoon on Tuesday. Models disagree with the timing of this cold frontal passage Tuesday into Tuesday night with the ECMWF and NAM the quickest, and the GFS lagging roughly 6 hours behind exiting the front out of the CWA. Another conditional concern for strong to severe storms is seen with this ejecting shortwave, with strong winds once again the main hazard. Models are consistent in showing a strong signal for heavy precipitation with this frontal passage Tuesday night which should be the final push of this mid level wave out of the central Plains. Dry weather returns Wednesday and Thursday as surface high pressure enters the central Plains behind the main front. Much cooler temperatures will be seen with highs topping out in the 50s both these afternoons. Disagreement in the synoptic pattern exist beyond Thursday with confidence in precipitation chances later in the week low. && .AVIATION...(For the 12Z TAFS through 12Z Monday morning) Issued at 555 AM CDT Sun Oct 7 2018 Expect IFR conditions due to low CIGS to persist through much of the forecast period.
