The central Great Plains remains beneath a north-south-oriented
corridor of deep-layer confluence between an anticyclone centered
over the central Appalachians and broadly cyclonic flow from the
Four Corners region toward the central Great Basin. Deep, albeit
modest, upward motion beneath the level of non-divergence --
embedded within this zone of confluence -- will continue to interact
with ample deep tropical moisture being advected northward to foster
the continuation of multiple rounds of precipitation across the
forecast area. A subtle speed maximum/sheared vorticity banner
appears to be advancing around the western periphery of the
anticyclone across the region -- locally enhancing the poleward flux
of rich moisture across the central Plains.

Aside from the aforementioned speed maximum, water vapor loops
suggest only minor midlevel perturbations embedded within the
southerly flow aloft. As a result, deep-layer baroclinicity and an
overall focused zone of enhanced convergence/organized-convective
training potential appear unlikely to affect the region in the short
term. The combination of the aforementioned modest ascent and
positive theta-e advection associated with deep moisture transport
will support an increase in the coverage of convective activity
through the diurnal-heating cycle today. A gradual uptick in showers
and isolated thunderstorms should build northward along the corridor
of confluence/positive theta-e advection across parts of north-
central KS this morning. Then, through the day, this activity should
build eastward to some extent in association with some zonal
component to steering currents interacting with the established
convection behind the departing midlevel speed maximum. The overall
convective morphology should appear more as small, loosely-organized
convective bands spreading northward/northeastward. This activity
will continue into the evening hours, although present indications
that at least a slight decrease in the areal coverage of
precipitation will occur from west to east during the late afternoon
into the evening hours.

Then for tonight, a frontal zone accompanying a midlevel wave
embedded in a northern midlevel air stream will advance southward --
approaching the NWS Topeka County Warning Area. By late tonight,
this boundary is forecast to extend from near Falls City NE to the
vicinity of Concordia KS and farther southwest toward Dodge City KS.
Moisture convergence along this boundary, along with nocturnal
cooling at the top of the deep moist layer resulting in a boost in
tropospheric lapse rates, will likely foster a renewed potential for
shower and isolated thunderstorm activity to affect the region --
particularly across parts of north-central and northeast KS.

For today and tonight, midlevel lapse rates will remain poor in
association with the tropical-type thermodynamic profile maintained
over the region, with 500-mb temperatures on the order of
-6.5C to -5.5C. This warm midlevel profile should also maintain warm-
cloud-layer depths on the order of 4-5 km, favoring ample collision-
coalescence processes supporting efficient precipitation growth.
Moreover, some convective component to precipitation growth --
associated with narrow-MLCAPE profiles driven by ample boundary-
layer moisture (e.g., lowest-100-mb mean mixing ratios around 15.0
to 15.5 g/kg) beneath a deep moist-neutral thermodynamic profile --
will also foster efficient precipitation growth. Furthermore, the
Storm Prediction Center Sounding Climatology indicates that the
Monday evening 00Z observed sounding upstream at Norman, Oklahoma
sampled a near-record precipitable water of 2.04 inches --
highlighting the ample tropical moisture advancing into the region.
As a result, high rainfall rates will likely accompany the
precipitation moving across the region. While the duration of heavy
rain at any one given location with a band of convection may tend to
be somewhat limited by the lack of an established synoptic
baroclinic zone, repeated rounds of convective activity combined
with the high precipitation rates will prolong the flash-flood
potential.

Moreover, with recent rainfall accumulations during the past couple
of days ranging from a few to several inches in many areas across
the ongoing Flash Flood Watch area, saturated soils will tend to
resist additional rainfall absorption resulting in enhanced water
run-off and a favorable antecedent environment for flash flooding --
even if only around a couple inches of rain were to fall in some
locations. In response to these developments, the Flash Flood Watch
remains in effect until 00Z this early Tuesday evening. There is
some potential that the renewed chance for heavy rains tonight could
warrant an extension of the Watch, or perhaps the issuance of a new
Flash Flood Watch. Convective trends through the day will largely
influence where subsequent flash-flood potential would be greatest.

Ample cloud coverage across the region will tend to de-amplify the
diurnal/nocturnal temperature-variability cycle, with high
temperatures today expected to range from the upper 70s to lower 80s
and overnight lows tonight expected to be in the upper 60s to around
70F. Southerly winds may occasionally become gusty today in
association with slightly enhanced diurnal vertical mixing amid the
locally tightened height gradient between eastern states ridging and
western states troughing.

Wednesday will see a frontal boundary/trough move southeast across
northeast and east central Kansas on Wednesday, gradually
positioning south into southern Kansas or northern Oklahoma by 12Z
Friday. A moist airmass will continue across the region, setting the
stage for more rounds of locally heavy rainfall and possible
additional flooding. The slow movement of the front, upper support
from a the tail end of a mid level trough moving across the central
plains coupled with a region of upper level difluence, and 850 mb
theta convergence over eastern Kansas point toward another round of
heavy rainfall Wednesday night into Thursday.

The frontal boundary moves northward Friday and Friday night to near
the Nebraska border as the remnants of Gordon approach southeast
Kansas advecting deep tropical moisture into northeast and east
central Kansas before moving off to the east on Saturday. Sided with
the more westerly solution of the ECMWF which leans most toward the
NHC position as the GFS tends to be too fast with the recurve with
the tropical system. Locally heavy rainfall will be possible again
Friday and Friday night. An upper level trough will progress
eastward across the central plains into the Mississippi valley on
Saturday bringing an end to precipitation chances by Saturday
evening. Differences between the models by early next week yield low
confidence in precipitation chances. Temperatures will remain cooler
than normal in the wet regime through Saturday.

northward/northeastward across the region through tonight. The
coverage/intensity of this activity is expected to temporarily
decrease by late this afternoon and evening, before increasing again
tonight. MVFR ceilings and visibilities will accompany the heaviest
precipitation. Otherwise, VFR conditions are expected into
tonight, before ceilings lower to MVFR by late tonight. South to
south-southeast winds are anticipated, with wind gusts around
15-20 kt this afternoon.

The potential for additional moderate to heavy rainfall exists
today. The Flash Flood Watch continues through 7 PM this evening
for north central and parts of northeast Kansas. Additional
rainfall amounts of 1 to locally 2 inches will be possible.

Minor to moderate flooding will develop or continue on several
rivers and creeks in north central and northeast Kansas today.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Wednesday through Monday.

Showers and thunderstorms will continue to be possible through
the late portions of the week and localized flash flooding could
again occur.

Minor flooding of a few rivers and creeks in north central and
