...Blizzard on Track to Impact the Region Beginning Late
Tonight...

.A potent storm will track through the region tomorrow, spreading
into north-central Kansas after midnight tonight and the rest of
northeast Kansas shortly after sunrise. Rain early on will quickly
change over to snow with snowfall rates of over an inch per hour 
possible at times. Total snowfall amounts of 5 to 7 inches will be
possible towards the Nebraska and Kansas border, with lesser 
amounts further south. Strong winds of 35 to 45 mph, coupled with 
the heavy snow, will lead to blizzard conditions north of I-70, 
with near blizzard conditions along and south of I-70 even in 
areas that see lesser snow amounts. Strongly consider altering any
travel plans you have on Sunday as driving may be nearly 
impossible in some areas.

of northeast and east central Kansas through midday. Rain early

inch per hour possible at times. Total snowfall amounts of 6 to
12 inches will be likely for areas north of a line from Emporia to
Lawrenece with locally higher amounts possible. Lower snowfall 
amounts of 2 to 6 inches are expected south of that line. Strong 
winds of 40 to 50 mph, coupled with the heavy snow, will lead to 
blizzard conditions along and north of the Emporia to Lawrence
line. Even with lesser snow totals expected south of that line, 
near blizzard conditions are possible. If you choose to travel you

6 to 12 inches will be likely for areas north of a line from
Emporia to Lawrence with locally higher amounts possible. Lower 
snowfall amounts of 2 to 6 inches are expected south of that line.
Strong winds of 40 to 50 mph, coupled with the heavy snow, will 
lead to blizzard conditions along and north of the Emporia to

area; however, roads will remain treacherous into the overnight
hours tonight. Ground blizzard conditions are being reported in
areas where the snow has ended due to winds of 35 to 45 mph
blowing around the fresh snowpack. Total snow accumulations have

.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)

A relatively benign weather day is expected today into this
evening before conditions gradually deteriorate late tonight...

As of 09Z Saturday morning broad northwesterly midlevel flow was
present across the central US. The trough axis that brought very
light showers across the region Friday has progressed into the upper
midwest region. The midlevel shortwave that will likely result near-
blizzard conditions across portions of the area Sunday is currently
positioned across MT/ID.

For the rest of this morning and today, morning temperatures have
been tricky as a very shallow, steep inversion remains overhead.
Temperatures have remain in the upper 30s to near 40 where wind
speeds have remain 5 MPH or greater. Areas that have seen wind
speeds below 5 MPH have temperatures near 30. As deeper boundary
layer mixing ensues after sunrise expect more consistent
temperatures area-wide. A weak sfc ridge axis will traverse the
region through the day, yielding light southeasterly winds with
mostly sunny skies. Have increase highs this afternoon as 900 mb
temperatures are near 10-12 C, with mixing heights reaching that
point, highs will range from the upper 50s to lower 60s. Lee
cyclogenesis will ensue across eastern CO through the day as the
aforementioned shortwave traverses the central Rockies later today.
Cloud cover will also be on the increase by late afternoon with the
approaching trough.

Uncharacteristically, model discrepancy remains with the placement
of the sfc low late tonight into Sunday. Please refer to the long-
term discussion for additional details regarding the winter storm.
Bottom line precipitation is expected to overspread the area from
northwest to southeast through Sunday morning. Some low-level dry
air may delay precipitation onset, although strong ascent should
saturate the column relatively quickly. Little, if any, in the way
of a warm nose is progged by forecast soundings, therefore as sfc
temperatures quickly decrease with the strong CAA, expect a rapid
transition from rain to snow.

.LONG TERM...(Sunday through Friday)

Lots of questions remain unanswered from the models for Sunday.
All of the operational solutions showed differing trends from 24
hours ago expect the ECMWF. The ECMWF continues to show some
consistency with the storm system. And while the 00Z NAM was way
different from yesterday, the 06Z NAM looks much more like the
ECMWF. The 00Z Canadian has also trended towards the ECMWF solution.
So the forecast favors the ECMWF a little more over the other
solutions. However the lack of snow from the 00Z GFS/NAM gives some
pause to going with the higher snow amounts. The main problem has
always been whether the surface low will organize into a well
defined cyclone with good frontogenesis on the northwest side.
The GFS has struggled to show are good wrapped up cyclone and the
00Z NAM's trend to be much weaker with the system was unexpected.
In general, have remained conservative with the forecast snow
amounts with generally 2 to 5 inches expected north of I-70. But
ensemble data suggests there remains some potential for higher
snow totals across north central and northeast KS as far south as
I-70. I do think some 8 inch reports are not out of the question.

The one thing models are all in agreement with are the winds
strengthening behind the surface low. If there was no weather, this
would be a pretty high confidence wind advisory event. The concern
with the winds is the likely near blizzard conditions with the
snowfall. Will upgrade the watch to a winter storm warning trying to
focus in on the areas most likely to see the worst conditions.
This has looked like Brown and Nemaha counties for several days now.
And will replace the watch with an advisory for the remaining
counties with the understanding that further upgrades may be
needed if indeed the ECMWF proves to be the better forecast.

The winter weather looks to be east of the area by Sunday evening
and a northwest flow pattern develops through mid week with
little to no moisture to work with. So a dry forecast persists
through Wednesday. Subtle energy is progged by the models for
Wednesday night and Thursday as the pattern transitions to more
westerlies over the central plains. Because of this there
continues to be some small chance POPs in the forecast. There are
some signs of another mid-latitude cyclone developing just beyond
the forecast period.

There does not appear to be big push of warm air after the storm
system on Sunday. So a gradual moderation in temps is forecast.
Although snowfall on Sunday could impact how quickly temps moderate.
Have adjusted temps for Monday expecting some snow cover.

VFR conditions will continue through the next several hours.
Rapidly deteriorating conditions expected after 07Z with
visibilities likely falling to VLIFR in SN and BLSN around 13Z.
Some improvements possible at MHK around 18Z.

This hazardous weather outlook is for east central...north
central and northeast Kansas.

The probability for widespread hazardous weather is low.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Sunday through Friday.

A winter storm is expected to move through the region on Sunday.
Winter weather advisories and a winter storm warning have been
posted for north central, northeast and portions of east central
Kansas. Rain is forecast to change over to snow during the pre-
dawn hours Sunday. A period of snow and blowing snow is likely
through the morning with near blizzard conditions forecast. Snow
totals are expected to range between 2 and 5 inches, but locally
higher amounts are possible. In addition to the blowing snow and
poor visibilities, drifting snow could cause problems as north and
northwest winds gust to near 45 MPH.
