.UPDATE...
1015 PM Update...Freezing rain is being reported in the Dillon
area. Ice accumulations up to a tenth of an inch possible. Up to
10 inches of snow possible in the mountains of Southwest MT. Thus
a winter weather advisory issued for Southwest MT until Noon
Thursday. Brusda

830 PM Update...Only update this evening was to add mention of
patchy freezing fog for Hill and Blaine Counties until the
widespread clouds and precipitation move into that area.

Otherwise, the current forecast appears to be on track, as
precipitation has moved into the area west of Interstate 15. As
more moisture advects into the area, precipitation will spread
further east across the area overnight. A wintry mix of rain,
freezing rain, sleet, and snow will develop over the plains of
north central Montana through midnight, but it will then
transition over to all snow throughout the night as cooler air
aloft moves in. It is still looking like a messy pattern with
widespread snow accumulation through tomorrow.

.SYNOPSIS...

An upper level ridge will move eastward tonight, as a strong
upper level disturbance moves into the region. Expect rain and
snow showers to develop late this afternoon over Southwest MT and
then gradually move northeastward and spread into Central MT
tonight. Cold air will begin a change over to snow...and possibly
some freezing rain or sleet overnight tonight into Thursday
morning. Rest of Thursday, expect this colder air keep filtering
into the region, continuing chances for freezing rain, sleet or
snow over much of Northern and Central MT. Moderate snow
accumulations are possible.

Updated 0545Z.

VFR conditions for North-central MT terminals will decline through
early morning with areas of mixed precipitation moving from south to
north. The freezing rain potential now appears most likely broadly
along a line from KGTF to KCTB, with a few hundredths of an inch of
icing possible from midnight through around 05z. Precipitation
transitions to all snow by 12Z, potentially becoming moderate to at
times heavy from KHLN to KGTF to KCTB through 21Z. Conditions
gradually improve from south to north Thursday afternoon and
evening, with snow changing back to rain in some areas before
ending. PN

Updated 300 PM.

The flood advisory will continue for portions of Southwest MT, as
minor flooding continues to be reported via emergency managers.
Based on local emergency manager feedback, areas that are not
flooding could begin to see flooding during the afternoon and
evening hours over the next few days.

Rain/snow will move into the region this evening through tonight.
Overall liquid rainfall should be less than 0.25 inches in most
areas, thus significant new flooding issues are not anticipated at
this time...however...rain may bring some minor flooding or
ponding issues. The remainder of the week will see slightly cooler
more normal temperatures...possibly decreasing the threat of new

.PREV DISCUSSION...
/ISSUED 300 PM MDT Wed Mar 14 2018/
Tonight through Thursday...Big changes lie ahead in the forecast
with the return of winter weather for the entire area beginning
tonight. The large and dominant upper-level low continues to pump
increasing Pacific moisture across the region this evening and
tonight. Within the large counter-clockwise flow around the low,
most short-range guidance has finally come to an agreement with
the projection of an embedded shortwave trough rotating, and
amplifying across the state of Montana late tonight and early
tomorrow. Because of this, given increasing dynamic support for
low-level ascent, coupled with sufficient moisture aloft, snow
will likely develop and expand across the area late tonight
through Thursday morning. Details still remain to be seen as far
as developing mesoscale features with this system, but it is
important to note that where any mesoscale banding occurs, that
there could be variations in snowfall amounts across the region.
It is still looking likely that higher elevations primarily
across central areas and along the Divide will be impacted by
significant totals of heavy wet snow that may likely lead to
impacts with travel beginning early tomorrow and lasting through
the day. Cities in lower elevations including Great Falls and
Helena also have the potential to experience heavy, wet snow
impacting the morning commute Thursday morning. The next item of
concern will be the potential for mixed precipitation in the
onset of the precipitation late tonight. With the aforementioned
shortwave swinging through the state, ample low-level flow
upwards of 50kts from the southeast will help pump temperatures
above freezing in the low-levels into eastern areas of the CWA.
With this nose of warmer temperatures aloft, periods of freezing
rain and sleet look likely which may lead to some impacts,
primarily from Great Falls to Havre, including parts of Highway
87 and Highway 2 where some impacts to travel may be likely.
Otherwise, this wintry mess will quickly attempt to depart the
area to the north by Thursday afternoon and evening, with a small
drying period possible Thursday night and into Friday morning.

For Thursday night through Sunday...most models indicate a rather
unsettled period of weather with periods of mostly snow falling.
Overall during the day on Saturday looks to be the one period
where we should have a break in the precipitation. Overall daily
snowfall accumulations of 1 to 3 inches seem possible in most
areas. Again, temperatures will remain below normal.

For Monday through Wednesday, the GFS/EC have different solutions
for the region, as the EC is quite a bit colder, with periods of
snow, especially over North Central MT. The GFS is not quite as
cold/snowy. Overall, leaned towards a blend for Mon thru Wed, but
confidence is low at this time for this period. Brusda
