.UPDATE...
Updated forecast is out. Kept the dense fog advisory for Cascade
County, as fog still looks to linger over the southern portions
of the county. Fog continues in the Helena valley, but that too is
slowly eroding. Small adjustments to pops/temps towards current
trends for this afternoon.

Looking ahead, light snow develops over Southwest MT this evening
then gradually over spreads Central MT by Sunday morning. The
heaviest snowfall is expected mostly east of my area, but
locations near Grass Range, Bozeman could get clipped by slightly
higher snow amounts. Most of the snow will be over with by 12 AM
Monday morning. Adjustments to the current highlights will occur
with the afternoon package. Brusda

.SYNOPSIS...
An upper level disturbance will move northeastward into Eastern MT
tonight. Expect increasing clouds, along with a good chance for
snow over southern and central MT by Sunday morning. Periods of
light snow will continue, especially east of a line from Great
Falls to Havre on Sunday. Expect colder temperatures to once again
move back into the region, with afternoon highs mostly in the 20s
for the first half of next week.

Updated 1800Z.
Expect patchy fog in the Helena area until about 19z, then it
should erode slowly from west to east. Increasing clouds expected
over Southwest MT this afternoon, with snow developing this
evening around Bozeman. The snow will move up into the Helena,
Great Falls and Lewistown areas by 12z Sun. Low clouds expected in
the Havre area through mid afternoon, before dissipating a bit.

.PREV DISCUSSION...
/ISSUED 500 AM MST Sat Mar 3 2018/

Today through Monday...A brief break in snow will be found today
before more active weather returns tonight into Sunday and
possibly Monday. Yesterday's disturbance has now pulled north into
Canada while a frontal boundary brings clouds to eastern and
southern portions of the area currently. Overall snow will be on a
diminishing trend this morning. Areas with clearing could even see
some patchy fog this morning...mainly for central portions. As
the day progresses a secondary low encroaches on the area. This
will be are next weather maker...although track still greatly
relies on how this low interacts with our first low now in Canada.
Most models indicated a slightly westward track of this second
low. This could return chances for snow to the southwest by late
this afternoon...and spread northward through this evening.
Tonight through Sunday this low really gets ramped up and develops
a trowal feature across MT. The heaviest snow still looks to be
just east of our CWA...however...the westward shift would still
bring overrunning snow...moderate to heavy at times...tonight
through Sunday. Broad wrap around moisture could then linger light
snow into Monday morning. Although models are coming closer to
agreement there is still only moderate confidence in this westward
shift in storm track. Have issued a Winter Storm Watch to
highlight the expected areas of concern for now. Current forecast
have a general 2 to 4 inches from along and east of Interstate 15
and south of US Highway 2...with higher amounts near 6 inches in
the southwest. Along and north of US Highway 2 looks to mostly
miss out on the snow. There is a potential that low level moisture
could bring some patchy fog or even freezing drizzle tonight into
Sunday. Confidence is not high enough to include in the forecast
at this point. This large low then moves into the Northern Plains
on Monday ending widespread threat of snow. There still could be
some scattered snow showers Monday as northwest flow brings a
weakly unstable pattern. Temperatures will remain below normal,
with Sunday being the coldest day of the short term. Highs will
generally be in the 20s and 30s with lows in the single digits,
with even cooler temperatures expected for Sunday. Anglin

Monday night through Saturday...Medium range models have come
into fairly good agreement on the large scale pattern throughout
the upcoming week. Period begins under a NW flow aloft with some
lingering shortwave energy to ripple across the the region Tuesday
before upper level ridging progresses east across the Northern
Rockies and MT late Wednesday through Friday. Energetic westerly
flow in the eastern Pacific begins to flow over the ridge for
increasing clouds and winds by Friday with trough axis moving
onshore at some point next weekend. A few showers may accompany
the weak shortwave energy moving through the region Tuesday with
temperatures remaining below seasonal averages. Warming and drier
conditions are likely to develop mid to late next week, though
there is still some uncertainty in the amplitude of the upper
ridge that progresses across the region as well as continued weak
high pressure at the surface east of the Rockies, which may limit
the degree of warming until a lee-side trough develops Friday.
