.SYNOPSIS...

Heavy snow will impact mountain passes along the Montana and Idaho
border through Friday. Elsewhere, lighter snowfall is expected
north along the Interstate 15 corridor. Some areas may not see
much snow at all east of Interstate 15. After a break on Saturday,
more snow may impact portions of the area Sunday into Monday.

.DISCUSSION...

Rest of today through Saturday...An interesting setup is in play
through Saturday, with active/impactful weather potentially
continuing into next week for at least part of the area.

This afternoon, a deep upper level low continues to pinwheel just
off the WA/OR coast. At the same time, a shortwave is rounding the
base of the trough and will be our next weather maker. At the
surface, a stationary front remains draped NW to SE across Central
Montana. As the shortwave moves ashore this evening, it will take on
a negative tilt, then shift quickly NE through Montana on Friday.
This will allow an area of low pressure to develop at the surface in
the vicinity of the stationary front. This low will then quickly
translate north into southern Canada where it will undergo deepening
as the previously-mentioned shortwave closes off. Eventually, the
whole system will weaken with time and push away from the area on
Saturday.

For our forecast area, then, this setup favors a focused area of
precipitation along and north/west of the surface low track (where
surface convergence and low level upslope flow is maximized). Which,
at this time, looks to be from the MT/ID border north along the I-15
corridor and into southern Canada. There are some model differences
in the track, but a general consensus on the above-mentioned areas.
Later tonight, then, precipitation will begin to spread from south
to north as low/mid level moisture increases. Large scale lift and
continued moistening will allow precipitation to spread north into
parts of Central Montana on Friday. By Friday afternoon/evening, a
Pacific cold front will move NE across the entire area, with the
steadier snow becoming more showery in nature in its wake. Of note,
modest instability for this time of year is forecast to develop
Friday afternoon along the front which, if nothing else, should
promote a more convective nature to the rain/snow showers with
briefly heavier precip rates possible in a few areas. But, given the
amount of instability, a few lightning strikes are certainly
possible. The better instability will also promote better mixing,
leading to a period of stronger wind gusts across SW MT and possibly
extending as far NE as the Lewistown area. Snowfall amounts will be
highly dependent on the track of the surface low. For now, thinking
the greatest amounts/impacts will be parts of SW MT and portions of
Central MT west of I-15. If the low track shifts east a bit, then
impacts may extend a bit further east of I-15. On Saturday, as the
system moves away, some wraparound moisture/snow may glance areas
right along the US/Canadian border. MARTIN

Saturday night through Thursday...Forecast models start off the
medium range period in decent agreement but, once again,
solutions diverge significantly beyond day 4. Period starts off
with surface and 700 mb lows north of the Canadian border while
main energy associated with the upper level trough remains south
of Montana. GFS keeps energy south of the region with the Great
Falls forecast area remaining mostly dry Saturday night through
Monday. Meanwhile, the ECMWF brings energy through the Treasure
State and forms a secondary closed low over central Montana for
widespread precipitation Saturday night and Sunday before the low
moves into the northern Great Plains and forms a strong storm
system with blizzard conditions likely east of the forecast area
on Monday. Model solutions become further exacerbated for the
remainder of the forecast period with questionable timing of
shortwave troughs and ridges Tuesday through Friday. Confidence
in the forecast pattern is quite low so have stuck close to a
compromise forecast that keeps PoPs generally below seasonal
averages with temperatures remaining mostly cool. mpj

VFR and some mtn obscurations today giving way to lower CIGs/VIS in
SN/BLSN late tonight through FRI.

Increasing low/mid level moisture returns this evening/tonight,
leading to lowering ceilings. Eventually, a surface low cutting NE
through the area will bring areas of -SHSN to parts of the forecast
area. Gusty valley winds will impact KEKS through Friday which may
worsen VIS at times due to falling and blowing snow. Of note, the
coverage of snow and associated impacts are less certain for most of
the area as the snow may be a bit more banded in nature as opposed
to widespread, steady snow. The current TAFs reflect the potential
impacts from snow, but this will continue to be re-evaluated in
later forecasts. At KBZN, increasing winds aloft over lighter
surface winds will likely lead to LLWS this evening/tonight.
