.UPDATE...

Wind speeds have trended lower this morning in response to rising
surface pressure over North-central MT. Webcams suggest ongoing
areas of snow drifting across roads in some of the colder
locations, but no restrictions to visibility resulting from
blowing snow. Therefore, the winter weather advisory for blowing
snow has been canceled. Downslope westerly winds have pushed mild
air across southwest MT and along the Rocky Mountain front
extending out to near I15. Expect warmer air to continue mixing
eastward. However, forecast temperatures today remain tricky in
the Helena valley where there is some potential they will remain
inverted. A few locations across central Montana continue to
report wind gusts near 30 mph, so isolated areas of blowing snow
remain possible. The forecast was updated to better match observed
trends in temperature and precipitation, with snow likely
persisting over mountain areas today. Looking ahead, we are
continuing to evaluate the potential for mixed winter weather
types tonight at lower elevations as precipitation develops and
cold air begins moving south again. PN

.SYNOPSIS...
An upper level trof of low pressure will generally reside over the
region for the next few days. However, a surface warm front will try
to move northward into Southwest and North Central MT today. The
front will likely stall out along a line from Shelby to Lewistown.
Colder air, along with widespread accumulating snow will then
develop late tonight in the Havre area, and gradually move south
and westward on Thursday into Central and Southwest MT.

.AVIATION...
Updated 1100Z.
A surface warm front is starting to move off the Rockies and
eastward into Southwest and North Central MT. Expect Low Level
Wind Shear this morning over the central portions of the region,
as the winds will be slow to increase at the surface. A cold front
then moves southward into far North Central MT this evening,
switching surface winds back to the northeast along the I-15
corridor. Light showers will affect the Havre/Lewistown areas this
morning, with widespread snow developing tonight with IFR
conditions in these regions. Mountain turbulence and obscurations

520 AM Update...Updated high temperatures across Central MT, as
warm continues to move northward. Good mixing this morning should
allow temperatures to approach 40 degrees in the Great Falls area.

Today through Friday...Main challenge today will be high
temperatures over North Central MT. Surface warm front has moved
through Great Falls, but it is likely to stall out along a line
from Shelby to Fort Benton to north of Lewistown later today.
Highs today in the 30s/40s will occur south of the front and only
in the teens on colder north side around Havre/Harlem. I did cool
temperatures in the valleys of the Southwest MT for today as
well, as they will be slow to mix out. Blowing snow will affect
areas mainly along/west of I-15 today. Thus the winter weather
advisory for blowing snow will continue for the Rocky Mountain
Front.

Another strong cold front will move southward through the region
late tonight and during the day on Thursday. Widespread
accumulating snow is possible tonight into Friday in the
Havre/Lewistown areas. Further south, the WRF model has
significantly reduced precipitation amounts in the Great
Falls/Helena/Bozeman area thus confidence has decreased a bit in
this region for total snowfall. Some light mixed freezing
precipitation is possible tonight along the frontal boundary,
mainly over Central MT. Overall the winter storm watch will
continue, but I did adjust the start time in Southwest MT closer
to Thursday evening.

For Friday night through Tuesday, expect a very cold morning on
Saturday over North Central MT. If skies clear out towards sunrise
on Saturday morning over the North, it could be even colder.
Precipitation decreases quite a bit for Sat into Sunday. For
Sunday night into Monday, the GFS/EC are quite different, with the
GFS cold/snowy and the EC not as cold with lighter precipitation.
Thus went with a blend during this period, but confidence is low
and significant changes are possible for this period. A
northwesterly flow aloft continues over the region for next
Tue/Wed resulting in seasonable temperatures. Brusda
