  may begin as rain this morning at lower elevations then change 
  to snow this afternoon. Heaviest snow is expected this afternoon
  with rates that may exceed one inch per hour at times.

.SYNOPSIS...

A weak weather disturbance in moist westerly flow aloft will
continue to bring showers to central Montana early this morning
and through this afternoon across southwest Montana. A stronger
spring storm system is expected to move into the region Thursday
and Thursday night for widespread rain and snow transitioning to
all snow by Thursday night. Heavy snow accumulation is possible in
some areas before the system exits on Friday.

.10AM UPDATE...

Made one last update for the remainder of today. Satellite imagery
shows clearing skies along the Continental Divide at this time in
the wake of the shortwave moving through the area. The previous
forecast handles this, so no change needed there. That said,
slightly cooler temps aloft combined with modest daytime heating and
clearing skies should allow weak instability to develop this
afternoon. While there will not be any significant large scale
lifting mechanism this afternoon, the weak instability and lingering
mid-level moisture may allow isolated showers/weak t-storms to
develop along and south of a Great Falls to Lewistown line (as was
seen across far SW MT earlier this morning). For the update, I added
a mention of isolated showers/storms in that area for this
afternoon. Lastly, we decided to add Liberty County to the Winter
Storm Watch for tomorrow's system. A final call on Winter Weather
products will be made this afternoon, so stay tuned. MARTIN

Updated 1721z.

Spring storm to bring widespread low clouds, mtn obscurations, and
reductions to VIS to much of Central and SW MT on Thursday.

Initially, the main concern today will be breezy conditions (over
Central MT) and the potential for afternoon SHRA and isolated TSRA.
Widespread TSRA activity is not anticipated, though, and confidence
was too low to even mention in the TAFs for now. If any TSRA did
develop, it would likely be along/south of a KGTF/KLWT line. The
concern then shifts to the spring storm to impact the area on
Thursday. Widespread MVFR/IFR conditions are expected, with
occasional LIFR conditions likely. MARTIN

.PREV DISCUSSION...
/ISSUED 525 AM MDT Wed Apr 11 2018/

Today through Friday...Westerly flow aloft persists across the
region today with embedded disturbances and deeper moisture moving
across SW MT where coverage of showers will be greater through
today. Temperatures remain close to seasonal averages today with
breezy west winds persisting across western portions of north-
central MT. Attention then turns to the larger storm system moving
into the region late tonight through Thursday night as an
amplifying upper level trough moves across the region. Models
continue to converge on a solution focusing heaviest precipitation
amounts along an axis from eastern portions of SW MT north and
northwest into central and western portions of north-central MT
Thursday and Thursday night. Snow levels should lower Thursday
afternoon and evening as colder air is drawn in from the north and
northwest, allowing snow levels to fall to lower elevations by
late Thursday afternoon/evening. Confidence has increased with
regard to placement of heaviest precipitation with potential for
0.50" or more in previously mentioned areas and locally in excess
of 0.75" from eastern portions of Gallatin county NE into
southern Fergus county. While confidence in moderate to heavy snow
accumulation for the mountains is high, particularly from the
Gallatin/Bridger ranges north through the Little belts and
Snowies, lower elevation snow accumulation will be complicated by
marginal temperatures and likely limited to non-road surfaces
through the daylight hrs on Thursday. Have expanded the winter
storm watch to cover additional areas of north-central MT,
including the I-15 corridor from Great Falls north to Cut Bank,
where several inches of accumulation are possible late Thursday
and Thursday night. Greatest potential for heavy wet snow
accumulation at lower elevations appears to be over Judith Basin
and Fergus counties where heavier precipitation and slightly
higher elevation combines with northerly upslope precipitation
enhancement. System moves out of the area early Friday with
gradually improving conditions. Hoenisch

Friday Night through Wednesday...High pressure aloft will move into
the forecast area in the wake of the Thursday/Friday system, which
will keep the area dry through Saturday night and warm temperatures
closer to normal. The next low pressure system to impact the area
will move to the Pacific Northwest coast on Sunday, bringing
increasing cloudiness to all of the area and showers to the western
Montana mountains. Forecast models have come into better agreement
on the overall positioning and timing of the system, which is
increasing confidence in the general forecast solution. The low
pressure trough is forecast to move onshore Sunday night into Monday
and into the northern/central Rockies Monday night. This will likely
bring showers to much of the area. Showers will decrease from the
southwest on Tuesday as the low pressure trough moves northeast
through eastern Montana and the Dakotas. Preliminary snowfall totals
are relatively light (1-3 inches over the plains, 3-6 inches in the
mountains) as daytime temperatures will likely warm to above
freezing, causing precipitation to be mostly rain showers then.
Regardless, this weather pattern could still change further, so will
continue to monitor it for possible winter and/or flooding
highlights. A weak high pressure ridge will move into the area in
the wake of this system for Wednesday, bringing drier and warmer
